We waited until our first baby was 24 weeks before we bought anything.. then went mad...and bought everything. The unimaginable happened and he died baby at 38 weeks, the nursery was laid out ready for him to come home...only he didnt. Coming home to see all his things was awful but it made him real and I'm glad we had made our preparations. A year after our second son was born alive and well. I knew I was going to be induced early but couldnt bring myself to prepare anything - sods law he arrived early - safe and well.. but I had to get my DH to rush home and pack for us...I felt guilty that I hadn't made the same effort as I had the first time but couldnt bring myself to do it. I'm pregnant the third time (27wks)....I havent made any preparations as yet (mainly because we are in the middle of building an extension!) but I will, we're fortunate as expecting another boy but I will buy some new things.

You have to be optimistic, sometimes things happen that we have no control over. Pregnancy can be difficult at the best of times so enjoy it as much as you can.. and if that means buying things for little one then go ahead and do it while you have the energy! I'm certainly not risking having my DH pack my hospital bag this time round!

It really is up to you..

Buying or not buying will not influence your

pregnancy either way, This silly superstition

really annoys me.

I buy & buy, especially sale & second hand bargains.

Do whatever is best for you. I am 28 weeks and my SIL went mental when I told her we had bought a pram. Said it was unlucky to have it in the house before hand. It's not actually in the house though because it's on order but I had never heard of that superstition anyway. If you wait people start to give you stuff. I bought a wee play mat in a sale only to be given one a couple of days later.

with baby number 3 i saw very cheap pushchair i liked in second hand shop when i was about 6-8 weeks pregnant.i couldnt not have brought it as it would have gone.but mil made me keep it at her house until later in pregnancy lol!i think its personnal choice some dont some do.

lindsayjane · 29/07/2007 07:56

yes - i'm 22 weeks now and we've bought lots of stuff already including pram, crib & clothes!! We're trying to buy something each month to spread the money a bit more. Plus cos we've got lots of time to buy it we can search round and get a really good bargain rather than having to buy everything all in one go

mozzybear · 29/07/2007 21:56

I was too scared to buy anything even up to the end. Was frightened something would go wrong after bleed at 12w. Wish I had got stuff as was woefully unprepared. If I had my time again I'd start buying after 20week scan. Think you've got be positive!

Many congrats. I've never liked shopping but enjoy shopping for ds!

Pheebe · 30/07/2007 08:10

For those of us who have had previous mcs I suspect we wouldn't dream of buying anything early. I waited for the 20 wk scan with DS1 to do any serious buying, just bought a teddy or 2 before that, and did the same this time (now 27 weeks and pretty much shopped out ).

For those lucky enough not to have had any mcs, relax, enjoy your pregnancy and shop if you feel the need. Most women, even those who have multiple mcs, will eventually go on to be successful. Keep a positive attitude would be my advice

I bought the bare minimum (and I mean BARE) for DS. And ditto for DD. But this was after 3 mcs. There was only a tiny element of superstition to this - mostly, I just couldn't have borne to come home to a house full of baby stuff if I had another mc. I found that when I mc-ed, I couldn't bear to remember being pregnant, so looking back at the time when I was happy and expectant wouldn't have been any consolation at all.

Mind you, even now, I don't buy too far in advance for either DS or DD. So maybe there is more superstition to this than I think...
