Scan: choroid plexus cysts, echogenic focus abdominal wall

Just had 20 wk scan. Apparently the brain cysts aren't anything worrying but if there are certain other symptoms can be an indicator of Edwardes syndrome (I researched that, not what told me at hospital). Sonographer also found a white area in the abdominal wall and said she didn't know what it was, however all the major organs seemed ok (although they couldn't do the heart assessment cos of where the baby was lying). I have appt in fetal medicine dept for further scan but wondered if anyone had similar results from an anomaly scan?

Thanks for all your good wishes. Consultant confirmed the cysts and said echogenic area was in bowel. He said cos of my age it would be reasonable to have amnio and I decided to go for it. So am now in amnio limbo--results take 5 working days. However, feel great that I don't have any more difficult decisions to make, and very glad that I did all my research beforehand so that I knew exactly what to expect.
Am nervous about possible m/c, of course, but consultant has a vg personal record of 0.5%. So am home now with plenty to read and DH looking after me.

At least the amnio will be definitive re any chromosomal issue. The waiting is horrible though. More waiting.
I do think Loulou's story below is very common in terms of consultants having a magnifying efect on risk. Fingers crossed, anyway.

When I had amnio, I asked the consultant how long I would have to worry about the risk of mc - i.e if it was going to happen, when would it be. He said if it was going to happen, they knew there and then, as they were doing the test because of the needle hitting the wrong spot, and therefore I was ok.

But i have heard conflicting views on this.

I think higher mc risks were from the days of less sophisticated scanning equipment.

Look after yourself....though it sounds as if DH is doing a good job.

tamum · 22/03/2006 18:13

So sorry you didn't get a firm answer, Arabica. The figures for amnio are at least 20 years old, and as Blu says they predate a lot of the scanning techniques that are used now. Plus of course a proportion of women will miscarry coincidentally within days of an amnio, and it will be attributed to the amnio even if it was a coincidence. It will be good to have the peace of mind, but an awful wait ahead. I actually vomited when the phone rang when I was waiting for my results I was so stressed.

wools · 22/03/2006 18:23

Arabica,

The amnio is a difficult decision to make but it does make a huge difference knowing that you were in very capable hands. I hope that the next few days pass easily for you...the waiting is very difficult. Your baby does then have exactly what my ds had on the scan last year....I know I keep saying it but try not to worry...The cysts usually disappear of their own accord and with the echogenic bowel - there could be a perfectly logical reason for it. It will be good though to have amnio diagnosis so you can put your mind at rest for once and for all.

bundle · 22/03/2006 18:25

oh arabica, I'm so sorry I missed this, I've only just caught up with your news. I too had an amnio (actually both pregnancies) for an Edwards scare with dd2, so remember the kind of thing you're going though, the waiting is dreadful. We had some preliminary results (pcr, which i think are about 85% accurate, but not sure whether that's routine, i was at the whittington) through in 48 hrs and I remember hyperventilating with relief/shock/numbness that dd2 was going to be fine. It sounds like you are getting top-notch care, no less than you deserve Smile.

cori · 22/03/2006 19:11

You have done the right thing Arabica. I know the waiting will be awful, but you need to know one way or the other whats ahead of you. Dh and Ds send there love.

hoxtonchick · 22/03/2006 19:16

still thinking of you :). and another curry-er...

desperatehousewife · 22/03/2006 19:38

Arabica,
you sound very calm and philisophical. I hope that the next few days pass easily and without too much worry. Keep your feet up as much as poss and take care. Keeping everything crossed for you.

You're all so kind! That's v reassuring about the amnio risk data, tamum. I did really feel v confident in my consultant and had a v strong gut feeling that the amnio was the best thing to do.
They also said take it easy tonight but after that, no need to rest if I didn't feel like it--miscarriage would happen because of the test not because of anything I have done. So DH and I will be spending day together in a nice park or art gallery. I watched while he put the needle in and it went nowhere near the baby.
Hoxton & Bundle, I really hope next week we can start to arrange our next outing for curry.
I know am going to feel like vomiting too each time phone rings, they have told me 5 working days although I'm kind of expecting it to be quicker than that.

Arabica, I've not seen this before, I can't imagine what you've been through this last week. I'm impressed how together you seem now, it seems like the research was difficult but maybe helped you to make an informed decision regarding the amnio? Am sending you all my love and good wishes for the long wait for the results. Have a lovely day tomorrow.

oops · 22/03/2006 23:03

Hi arabica,
i am sorry that you have ahd to have the amnio, but hopefully you will get an answer soon.
it must be dreadful..
i remember when pg with ds1, i had a cat with toxoplasma. i had some blood tests to see if i had become infected, waiting for those results was a bloomin nightmare... so i really feel for you
stay calm. xxx

Am kind of expecting a call tomorrow. Am glad to have passed first 24 hrs without any signs of m/c and plenty of kicks from the baby. I think am as calm as I can be under the circumstances.

OP posts:
Marina · 23/03/2006 15:55

arabica, sorry to have missed this. Thinking of you all and hoping for good result soon.

bakedpotato · 23/03/2006 16:02

More good wishes.
If I can make a suggestion: don't expect the result to come back early. Otherwise each day will be even more of an ordeal (as if).

FirstNikki · 23/03/2006 16:10

Best wishes Arabica hoping your results come soon to put your mind at rest and very please you and the baby are feeling fine x

wools · 23/03/2006 17:02

Arabica, glad you are feeling calm under very trying circumstances. Great news about lots of kicking - amnio obviously didn't bother baby.
I hope you do hear something tomorrow so that you don't have to go through the weekend with the uncertainty.

Arabica · 24/03/2006 00:35

This waiting is so hard. I'm having some pain but was told to expect it, so am trying not to be too worried (ha ha).
Did manage to go to close friend's place for the evening, was a nice distraction for a couple of hours.

OP posts:
tamum · 24/03/2006 10:52

I can't think of anything remotely helpful to say, Arabica, just wanted to say I'm thinking of you.

Arabica · 24/03/2006 19:12

After the worst 2 days of my entire life, am VERY pleased to report that I got a call from the hospital...and the amnio revealed no problems whatsoever!!! Grin Grin Grin
Thanks for all the support on this thread, I don't know what I would have done without you xxxx
