Easter Potty Training Support Thread

Just wondering if anyone else is planning on using the Easter break to try and potty train DC?

Ds is 2.5 and has shown a few signs of readiness although as a very active boy he is not keen on sitting still on the potty! I have 6 days off work though so I feel like we should try and he was very keen to choose a potty and 'big boy' Fireman Sam pants.

I am planning on staying at home for the first few days and have stocked up with:

  • Pants in a larger size
  • 2 potties 1 upstairs 1 down
  • Antibacterial spray
-1001 carpet cleaner Grin
  • Chocolate buttons for bribery
  • Sticker chart
  • Wine for me Grin

I have got pull ups for going out but hoping to crack it at home first.

Haven't bought a travel potty, is this essential?

Would love to hear from anyone else about to embark on potty training!

Ooh us - I'll join. DS is 3.1 and I'm 37 weeks pg. Having a mad panic to try and get it sorted by the time the baby arrives. We tried at Christmas and he just wasn't ready. However we've had a really sucessful weekend with very few accidents, so it's basically cracked in the house. I now have NO IDEA how to proceed with the next steps of going out and about so doing so research right now!

I'll join in too. Dd is 2.10. This is the second attempt. Tried last October and failed. She just wasn't ready. She is physically ready I'm sure of it, it's all psychological and if she can just get over the hurdle she'll be fine. She often has dry nappies in the morning and after naps. She refuses to sit on the potty altogether but will happily sit on the toilet but she will never do anything.

We've talked about it loads over the last few weeks and she knows tomorrow is the day the nappies are going. She's a huge frozen fan so ive got her frozen big girl pants that she can wear if she starts using the toilet properly. I've got giant chocolate buttons and a disney princesses sticker chart. I did promise her a Snow White dress in desperation for some interest but she seems pretty meh whatever about that. I thought that would seal the deal but she hasnt made any comment or looks of excitement about that so that didn't work! Maybe an elsa dress would swing it-hmmm! Anyway 1001 carpet cleaner to the ready!

Getting beyond frustrated and it's only 11am! She's wet 4 pants now and a lot of resistance to go on the toilet. Point blank refuses the potty. Starting to wonder if she's still not ready in her mind. She's so stubborn. I don't know what to do now. Whether or not to persevere or give up.

Hi waves can I join? We've been advised by our consultant (for daughters allergies) to potty train... She's nearly 19 months old. So we're on day 3. Day 1 and 2 were just not wearing any clothes in the house and trying to spot wee times. Day 2 was a little bettr than 1 as I was predicting a bit better so she got a choc for sitting on potty then watched teletubbies on it and got a big cheer if she weed. Today, we've had one accident (but she stopped the wee half way through) then two wees on the potty (with a choc and teletubbies again!) second one she got up after she weed so she's starting to get the idea. Think it's going to take a while longer though ??
However, her rash and itching has dramatically improved (even though we've always used reusable Nappies!) so we're going to continue for a bit!
Suggestions for how to get out the house would be welcome!!

Can I join in please, DD is 25 months and showing interest in the toilet and is aware when she's done something but has never actually done anything in the toilet or told me before she goes.. Being a glutten for punishment I thought I'd give it a try over the school holidays anyway so we're starting tomorrow :)

Sailing we were advised to train at 19 months due to urine intolerance on her skin (also use cloth) and sensitivity to disposables but after a week of trying and constant accidents because she was just nowhere near ready we had to give up and switch our cloth stash to stay dry materials which have helped immensely if you need a fallback it may be a suggestion.

We've got on amazingly at home, I'd say DS is basically potty trained in a 'house' setting (been at home and my Mum's). However he is 3.1 so I would expect this. We had a toy tractor he'd been coveting as a present for completing the first day (which was Saturday), and now if he refuses to wear pants/plays up, the threat is that his new tractor will be taken away until he decides to wear pants again. We've only had to threaten this once though. The next step is out and about for us. He came with me to a MW appointment yesterday, I just took our potty with us, and took him to the loo with me and he did do one there, so that's good. Then yesterday afternoon we went to the park for an hour without an accident but that might just be luck!

He's really scared of toilets though, so don't know how to progress, but the travel potties look too small for a 3.1 year old. He's at holiday club today where they have the mini 'pre-school' toilets, so I'm hoping that his keyworker will have maybe really encouraged him there and helped him to gain some confidence!

Can't get him to say when he needs a poo or get him to poo on the loo/potty :(

Hello fellow potty trainers! That's great you've cracked it for in the house Mrscog, hopefully the hardest part is over?!

Tomorrow is Day 1 of PT, I have a basket of spare clothes downstairs, sticker chart ready with stickers and lots of dvds for us to watch Grin

I plan to note the times he wees to see if any pattern emerges over the next few days so I can then ask him to sit on the potty at those times.

We started on Monday with our 2.5 year old dd.
This is the first time we've properly tried although she's been using the potty sporadically for over a year at her request.

Monday was a good start. Although we had a few accidents she seemed to be able to pre empt pees and ask to go on the potty.

Tuesday we had 3 pees on the floor by 10.30am but then she seemed to crack it and started taking herself to the potty when she had the urge.

Wednesday she didn't have any accidents and seems quite independent in knowing when she needs to go although sometimes needs a gentle reminder.

She's doing really well but a bit nervous of the 'regression' which I'm sure will happen.

We're doing no pull ups from about 8.30am until nap time and then after nap till bedtime just now.

Going to go to a friends house today who is also potty training her LO so don't need to worry about accidents too much and will be good to see how she gets on in different surroundings.

I've been using a sticker chart and milky way stars as a reward which she's loving. I also put away quite a few toys at Xmas time so have been introducing a new toy each day to keep her entertained with being housebound as she hates being stuck in the house.
Yday we played with her play doh cupcake making kit and she was able to stop playing when she felt the urge and get to the toilet on time.

I'm hopeful she's on her way but I'm just waiting for her to slip back a bit as she's doing so well.

Can I join too? My DD is 25 months and we started on Tuesday. She is reluctant to sit on the potty but will tell me when she needs a wee and there has always been enough time for me to coax her on to the potty so far. Only one accident so far (poo) so she seems ok with wees. Today is the first day of pants (she's been naked under her dress so far).

Is anyone else going stir crazy staying in the house? I have a baby too and am going a bit mad from staying in with two young children all day every day!

newtothenet yes, I'm fed up with the house too, but just really scared of accidents out and about. It doesn't help I'm 38 weeks pg and exhausted, so I doubt we'd be going out even if we weren't potty training! My pelvis is grinding and my eyelids are drooping already!

Morning all, today's plan is just to try reintroducing the potty/toilet every 30 minutes or so and try coaxing her onto it in the hope that she does something by coincidence and likes the praise but overall I'm just keeping note of any accidents like Cunningruse and seeing if there's any consistency.

Poor DS (8.9yo) is on his school holidays and stuck in with us, not that he's bothered as he's a Minecraft addict but i being a bit lax with the screen time rule Blush

Can I join... DD is almost 3 & we suspect she knows what we want her to do, she's just not interested in co-operating. So we're going to just go for it this weekend. I have a 6 day weekend, & DH is home as he's a f/t student.

We have a potty, toilet trainer seat, portable potty & liners, lots of leggings, pants, & sock, & some jelly shoes. And some fleece fabric to cover the sofa. And my mum on call to help with extra laundry (we don't have a drier - hope it will be sunny though!)

I'll join you all! DS has just turned 3, and ive been waiting for a while for him to show interest in the potty. Since he's still not into it, I've decided to go the 'just stick him in pants' route and hope that a few accidents will give him the right idea. Easter weekend seems a good time as there will be two of us to keep an eye on him, plus he will be seeing older cousins who already use the potty and toilet for inspiration. I think he understands the whole concept of using a potty, he just gets so distracted with more fun things.

Ok this is going to be tough, but no more cleaning up man size poos is our reward!

Well sadly we're out. Dd went to her room and put a nappy on herself this morning so that's the end of that then. I said i thought we were doing potty training again today and she said no we're not. I want a nappy on. So rather than argue I just said fine. She's done me a favour actually. Ds is 11 weeks old and is having a really bad day of reflux and crying a lot and refusing to nap so wiping up poo and wee off the carpet as well as sick would have been pretty horrendous! Ah well, try again in the summer holidays. She's clearly not up for it and it's not something I can force, even though I tried really hard yesterday, I was completely drained and fed up by the end of the day.

Don't be too disheartened littlepink DS was 2.10 at Christmas when we tried and he just wasn't quite mature enough. So far so good here - although we do have to wash the carseat cover now after an in car accident!

I'll join - I'm at a complete loss at what to do. Ds is just 3. He has a speech delay but will say when he is doing / has done a wee. As soon as he has been to the loo he will take his nappy of, put it in the bun, get a new one out and lie on it until you do it up. He will quite often repeatedly take his nappy off and get a clean one even if it is fresh on. He has huge tantrums if you try and put the nappy back on and not another clean one (last night I changed him 7 times in half an hour.)
I'm all up for toilet train but he has huge tantrums if we try and persuade him to sit on potty or toilet, but will clap and cheer if younger brother sits on it.
Any suggestions on getting him to sit on potty/toilet would be great (it's costing a fortune in nappies ). I've even tried putting him in Terry tolling pants but he screams and takes them off.

He's food motivated but even chocolate hasn't worked. Atm I'm looking after my 5 yr old niece who he adores and copies everything she does. I've resorted to getting he to sit on the potty and giving loads of praise. Maybe feeding her chocolate while she's sat on the potty will work.

I reckon bribery all the way Buttercup Grin Yesterday was day 1 and went much better than I expected to be honest, we had 3 wees in potty, 1 accident and a half and half where I caught him and lifted him. Feeling confident enough to progress to day 2 anyway!

Does anyone have any tips for poos though? Ds was pumping a lot yesterday afternoon and then did a poo once his night time nappy was on, which suggests he can control it but doesn't want to do it on the potty. Do I try to tackle this or concentrate on wees first?

after two days of DD telling me she needed a wee or poo in advance (well, saying she needed her nappy on with a worried look on her face), on day three she stopped and we had lots of accidents and I felt like I was constantly pestering her to try for a wee. Is this normal? At what point are they supposed to tell you in advance? She's my pfb and I really have no idea about these things!
