Just wondering if anyone else is planning on using the Easter break to try and potty train DC?

Ds is 2.5 and has shown a few signs of readiness although as a very active boy he is not keen on sitting still on the potty! I have 6 days off work though so I feel like we should try and he was very keen to choose a potty and 'big boy' Fireman Sam pants.

I am planning on staying at home for the first few days and have stocked up with:

  • Pants in a larger size
  • 2 potties 1 upstairs 1 down
  • Antibacterial spray
-1001 carpet cleaner Grin
  • Chocolate buttons for bribery
  • Sticker chart
  • Wine for me Grin

I have got pull ups for going out but hoping to crack it at home first.

Haven't bought a travel potty, is this essential?

Would love to hear from anyone else about to embark on potty training!

I'll join! Starting today as have til Tuesday at home with DD (26 months). So far have had 3 wees on the floor and none in potty. Struggling with having to be on the floor with her all the time as 35 weeks pregnant too! Am now trying to reduce the intervals between sitting on the potty as last two accidents happened as I was going in to get her on. Harder than I thought!

Hi all
We are starting with dd2 at the moment, and she seems to have mostly got it in the house.
She is young though (18mo) so we are just putting a nappy on to go out and not worrying about it.

But my tips from dd1:

  • going out - put loose trousers no pants on at first. The sensation of pants/leggings is a bit like a nappynappy so you want to avoid that feeling until you are confident they will ask for a wee.
  • re pops - we did that last - and let her poo in her morning nappy until we decided she could manage the night without and took that risk. She did a few poos on the loo before that but once she had no choice she had no problem.
  • butter - I might be hard line but I'd have just let the nappy tantrum and refused to put a clean one on. They dont need to get their own way always. But feel free to discount my view. Wink

Shame its not sunny so we can't put little bottoms in the garden.

Hi yes im tryin to potty train my 2 yr old son, we're on day 3, he nos he has to go onthe potty for wees but he ddoesn't seem to no when he needs a wee, he starts to wee where ever he is, thank goodness we have wood flooring, and once he notice he'll stop an we rush to the potty, sometimes he manages to finish his wee on the potty, im just concerned it may b to early to potty train as it seems he doesnt no when he needs to wee!!!! Anyone with any advice !!!!

movingalot · 03/04/2015 13:32

Ok that's 4 accidents - the last one while she was having lunch! No warning at all...

She has a nappy on now for her nap but I'm beginning to think she might not be ready for this yet. How frequently are people putting them on the potty? Every 10 -15 minutes or so? And how long do you let them sit there for? I've been getting her up after 5-10 if no result

Buttercup27 · 03/04/2015 15:34

poocatcher that's exactly what I did. So far he weed on my chair and pooed on the floor. He then found a pull up in my bag and put it on himself. I'm hoping once he starts his new nursery after easter he will see others using the toilet he will get the idea (his child minder Atm won't allow him to go into the toilet and has told him off for playing with the potty which I don't think has helped.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 03/04/2015 16:43

Any tips for when they deliberately withhold on the potty? DD has just sat & watched Room On The Broom on the potty, with no result. (It's about 30 minutes.) She got up, pants etc pulled up, promptly wees herself. Looked most unhappy about it but it's the second time today - is this normal? She's done it before with poos in her nappy as well - she clearly has control.

She did get a small chocolate for sitting nicely on the potty - is this counterproductive? Should we keep treats for when she only does wees etc in it?

Hurrah! She has done a wee in the potty! Actually she wet her pants a bit but we think she stopped it & then did the rest in the potty. When she got off the potty she got a chocolate button & she kept saying she was wearing big girl pants so maybe it's sinking in...? Yay!

Buttercup27 · 03/04/2015 19:27

He did it !!! Grin He took off his fresh on nappy and sat on his potty, completely unprompted! He clapped whilst sat on it and looked very pleased with himself yes he was sat on sideways and didn't do anything, but it's a start !

Buttercup27 · 03/04/2015 19:29

Yay ! Well done telephone a huge step in the right direction Cake

Ours is going ok, we've decided to night train at the same time because his nappy is dry in the mornings. Last night he was wet at 10.30pm, but I think it's because he went to bed early and overtired and wasn't able to get the brain power together to do 'one last wee'. He then woke up at 3.30am and did a wee then before going back to bed after chatting to DH for an hour Hmm then this morning back on track - a wee and a poo in the potty without prompting really.

I've just reminded him about wees as he hasn't done one for 2.5 hours now and is engrossed in Andy's Dinosaur Adventures.

slightlyconfused85 · 04/04/2015 16:39

A bit late joining but we have started today with DD who is almost 2.5. We planned to start earlier in the week but plans were scuppered by a bout of diarrhoea. Had a few wee accidents but very proud that we had a Poo in the potty about half an hour ago! Bless her she cried when she had done it out of pure shock but I feel like we have at least begun! 25 weeks pregnant so keen to crack this before July

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 04/04/2015 18:50

Mixed results so far today... mostly wet pants but she did do one wee in the potty (& then tell us straight away that she'd done it) so I think that's progress? Yesterday she didn't seem to know she'd weed in it, till we told her IYSWIM. Potty then nappy time I think, she's getting tired & yesterday we had a bit of a tantrum about now, think she felt stressed when tired at the end of the day.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 04/04/2015 18:51

Ooh and congratulations to everyone who is making progress (and those who aren't and who are remaining calm regardless!)

movingalot · 04/04/2015 21:31

We gave up at lunchtime today (day 2) after she seemed to be holding her wee in and getting quite stressed about it. Then doing a dribble in potty, dribble in pants, repeat and repeat! DH got frustrated and reckons she's not ready. I was happy to get out of the house on a nice day - we'll try again over the summer Smile

poocatcherchampion · 05/04/2015 10:46

Anyone still going? We are having some success here

shitebag · 05/04/2015 11:10

I only tried for a day and gave up because I just don't think DD is ready, she definitely isn't aware enough to let me know before she does anything so it was total guess work and nothing in the toilet so will hold off and try again in the summer.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 05/04/2015 11:16

Still trying here. She's on it right now, actually. We had 2 potty wees yesterday, & 4 wet pants. Think she wants to do it but is finding it stressful. She needs to get it though, she's 3 & nursery are pushing us to get her trained. Plus she's already in 6+ nappies so if we have to go a larger size (if she has another growth spurt) we are talking £££.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 05/04/2015 11:47

We're trying with DD2 too.

She is ready apart from hating to wear pants. She has said she wants to wear nappies forever. Even though her big brother and sister both wear pants, her friends at nursery wears pants and she knows that big girls wear pants. She simply hates them.

She's 3 now so it really needs doing. You'd think by DC3 we would be great at this, but apparently not.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 05/04/2015 11:53

DD loves her big girl pants, they were the first thing she mentioned when we came down this morning. But, she's definitely withholding. She had 2 cups of milk over an hour ago, we left it half an hour, then sat her on the potty & told her if she weed on it, she could have some chocolate buttons (she did it twice yesterday). Nothing so she got up after half hour. 5 minutes later, a really massive wee on the rug. Sigh.
