Loved the birth stories Qumps and MM.

GTDAB - sorry you didn't get the sweep. Birth stories make me emotional too so no loon emoticon needed

moosemama · 29/01/2009 20:59

Hi qumps, nope head didn't come out first the whole thing literally shot out across the bed and exploded as it landed. It really was quite spectacular!

Sounds like you did an amazing job, especially coping with the sickness and good for you for standing up to the mw and doing what your body was telling you instead.

It was amazing for me to see as DS1 was born downwards on a space age type birthing bed under epidural so didn't see him emerge and with DS2 I was facing the other way (over the headboard. I was so shocked, not only by the speed of her arrival but just to see her lying there between my knees quietly looking around, she was all clean and shiny thanks to still being in her waters just seconds earlier and looked so serene and beautiful I was instantly smitten (took a bit longer with both boys so its unusual for me to have that instant love feeling).

spink I didn't feel like I coped well at all. In fact it all felt so completely out of control especially compared to DS2s birth for which I felt totally in control and empowered.

EPPM I have heard about the born in the caul thing being lucky, but apparently there are different types and the luckiest type is if the baby is born with a sort of veil over their head which is separate to the amniotic membranes. Its still supposed to be lucky to be born with waters intact though. The midwives called her a 'boil in the bag baby'.

missjackson · 30/01/2009 07:53

FINALLY beautiful baby boy born yesterday 6.30am... after 30 hour labour! 8lb 7, still no name.... Ow... am stopping by computer with tea and toast but must limp to bed (did I say 'ow' already?....). Full debrief later..
so happy but sooooo tired...
hugs to you all x

chefswife · 30/01/2009 08:01

i think i posted my birth story on the other thread but i can't remember. reading other ones is great. DH and i borrowed our friends truck and headed to Vancouver on the 9am ferry. we were going to Ikea to pick up some furniture and bobs for the our new flat we just moved into. we spent a couple hours of cruising around and managed to catch the 3pm ferry back to Victoria. the announcement was made for people to head down to their cars as we were nearing Swarzt Bay. as we came through the door on deck 2 there was a gush and quite honestly i thought i wet myself. we stopped to get some groceries, came home, unloaded the truck, had some dinner and by 8 pm i could no longer be in denial to what was happening. DH phoned our midwife, and she suggested taking a bath and napping but by 11pm, there was no way it was going to be a long haul. she came to the house by midnight and Violet arrived at 2.2am, Dec 9th and it has been bliss ever since.

it's been 7 weeks and starting tuesday i guess we will refer to her age in months. she can hold her head up pretty well and has strong legs. she hates when i change her diaper but coos when DH does it. we are still co-sleeping but she sleeps so well it doesn't disturb any of us. i've picked up a couple of baby food books... so easy to make your own. the stroller we bought is proving it's expense... hmmm... i thought i had more to say. i think i'll just go to bed. night.

Congratulations MissJ!

qumps · 30/01/2009 13:02

congrats miss j. sounds like you are suffering though you poor thing. hope getting better.
mppaw very similar start here. ds2 very sleepy and also had jaundice. think other than feeding slept the whole time for 1st 2 weeks. 6 weeks now and awake a bit more but usually looking to go back to sleep and hates to be stimulated by toys. sounds crazy but rather than just go with it i keep trying to wake him which means he cries and then goes back to sleep. i am just guessing he will get there when he is ready. he has 3 check ups next week so will let you know what they say.
can't remember who was having problems with little feeds too but i also had a no 2 teat suggested to me. came out too fast for him though but longer gaps seem to be resulting in bigger feeds. also i change his nappy when he stops and then offer some more.
sorry 1 handed typing waffling but hope it helps.
ds1 a complete terrorist today. hit me, pushed at gymborie and scratched ds2. no idea what to do. so much for my teaching skills coming in handy...

mppaw · 30/01/2009 13:16

Thanks qumps. Despite the night from hell, DS has been awake since 9:30 this morning !! Have tried and tried to put him to sleep but no interest....I give up to be honest and I think I will just go with it and hopefully he will sort it out. Off to the hospital in a mo so should sleep in his pram.

Spink · 30/01/2009 14:23

hey everyone,
we've had a rubbish night too - ds has ANOTHER ear infection and was waking all night, and Rosie wouldn't settle after her 2am feed, kicking and squirming and looking like her tum was hurting. She went to sleep finally at 5am, and ds wouldn't go back to sleep after 5.20. So, had 20 mins sleep after 2am and then up and (not) ready for the day!!!
I am typing 'night nurse' into google search engine in a sec I think...

Ok. A quick POO question - baby not me this time . I know that we are all looking and hoping for yellow poos. But do they ideally need to be grainy? ds's always were, but Rosie's are (bright yellow but) totally smooth.. what do you reckon?

mppaw · 30/01/2009 15:14

Not sure what the texture should be spink. DS's is yellowy with a hint of brown and quite grainy. He only has to sigh and he poo's himself, which has resulted in him having mega burns on his bum so have been slapping on the sudocrem to try and protect it. Sorry not much help, hopefully someone will be along who is more helpful.

LenniEd · 30/01/2009 17:27

I just knew it! Congratulations MissJackson and go get some rest!

Hello chefswife - good to hear from you and nice to see it has all come so naturally, sounds like you've got a little gem there!

Seem to recall Tree saying English mustard was the ultima-poo but French mustard OK too - so that would mean you're already at the baby poo nirvana Spink We're in grainy land here too and love the expression 'only has to sigh and he poo's himself' mppaw made me chuckle... so true of this one too. DD was postively constipated by comparison.

Slept much better last night - yay! Of course means won't sleep tonight, but such is life.

GTDAB - Happy due date!! Now get that baby out lady, we want to meet them

Spink · 30/01/2009 18:43

ultima poo. superb. she does make a meal of it though, no sighing here, definite diva pooing from Rosie..

chefswife · 30/01/2009 20:22

ok. i think i have a good solution to getting baby to sleep through the night. we burn a little lavender oil in a tea light burner just before putting her to bed. put a hot water bottle/heat pad where baby sleeps. just when baby comes off nipple, wait a minute to be sure baby is done, and then lay down in bed, (remove the heat), and voila. they sleep longer through the night. been doing this with DD for three nights and all three nights its work. one day was even out of the usual routine. she's been mellow through the day too and more alert. just something to try anyhow. its funny how we become sleuths to discovering all the 'things' baby likes. (i am turning into a total geeky new mother... so different for me.)

chefswife · 30/01/2009 20:23

oh and make sure room is warm when you lay them down but turn the heat down so the room cools slowly.

treedelivery · 30/01/2009 20:43

Damn real life it keeps interfering with my mumsnetting!!! Had visitors, piles, constipation and back ache. On plus side have managed the pre school runs and generally devoted waking hours to the dd1, and every hour to dd2 who feeds 2 hourly, for 40-60 mins. So fairly intense. AND had the nerve to loose a fair bit of weight!! Milk late and not plentiful so working hard lying about giving her free access.

To clarify as someone was asking, there was POO. from 8-9 cms till delivery, poo. Yards of it. And a baby too. Midwife agreed had she piled up the poo it would have been of a comparable size to Hatts. NICE!

Right, at mum's [50 miles away from home and 1 week old - a natural back packer like Mamma] and off to Birmingham for a wedding Saturday [another 3 hours] then home Sunday [prob about 5 hours drive]. Won't stop twitching/rocking following this epic journey till Tuesday so forgive me if I disappear again.

Have read your story Moose - am knackered reading it. Your a star with a pain threashold and a half! I'd have freaked, hunted out that midwife, slapped her then run out of unit screaming. All power to you for keeping it together during such a fast deliver.

Someone asked about their wee? white cells in urine, can mean a localised reaction to infection or irritation [so urinary tract infection or bladder irritation like cystitis], but probably low level and not very active if no stinging or pain in back etc. Good idea to send of a sample, result available in 2-4 days. If they grow a bug they also tell you which antibiotics will kill it. Dead common in the pregnant!

Saving other birth stories til I can savour them and enjoy with cuppa and a biscuit.

DD week and a day, can't believe it!

LenniEd · 30/01/2009 21:34

Spink

Good luck you mad brave woman!

I think we should compile all these birth stories somewhere on their own thread maybe so they are all together. I've enjoyed them all so much.

We do the hot water bottle thing too chefswife!

rrrayray · 31/01/2009 05:38

hi ladies.

feeling a bit freaked out tonight.

The night before last midwife called to say when waters broke but no contractions they took a swab, and has since come back to show i had/have group b strep at the time of delivery.

DD is SOooooooooo sleepy in the day, feeding say every 4 hours and even if you wake her she is only alert for about 10 mins. At night, she is feeding every hour, maybe 2 if i'm lucky. But i'm more concerned about her breathing. it sounds to me like she has a cold, its just so mucusy and soometimes sounds like she is struggling. When Mw came for 5 day check she was happy she didn't have a cold, but it only really shows at night.

Not sure what to do?

Also... strep b/ illness issues aside...

Any ideas how to switch so sleeps more at night, and less in the day? Mummy needs some sleep!!!

chefswife · 31/01/2009 06:48

rrrayray my DD was the same. i was waking her to feed her those first couple of weeks and she fed for up to an hour. her nose is still snotty but her lungs are ok so midwife said not to worry. for DD's nose, she said to express some milk and use a dropper inserted into her nose and flush it out. it works. you can use water but the midwife said breast milk is familiar for the little one so wouldn't be so drastic. as for the sleeping thing. slowly stretch out her day time wake time and give her a big feed at before your bedtime... well, this is what seems to be working for me these last few weeks. good luck.

how is everyone finding the new mumsnet format?

fourlittlefeet · 31/01/2009 08:26

hello, coldy baby here too; we are using saline solution, quick squirt up each nostril about 1 min before a feed. BM would work too - don't know why I'm not using it as already squirting it in his eyes for sticky eye.

Ray - could your LO have day and night the wrong way round? I know a couple of babies who had that at the beginning. Not sure how you convert them back, but I think its something to do with giving them lots of daylight?

Tree, sounds like you are a very busy lady! I too am finding weight disappearing the second time with a toddler to look after, have lost 14kgs already (thank god, was a bit of a biffa at nearly 100kgs! Don't like weighing more than DP).

Finally got my firtst 3.5 hour feed stretch last night after 2 weeks of 1 or two hour round the clock feeds. woohoo. we are on our way. Can't BELIEVE its been 2 weeks already!

Not sure about the new format - doesn't widen as nicely so you have to scroll more. Looks a bit more modern and sleek though.
