running just realised cross posted yeyee for a better night!

RunningOutOfIdeas · 24/05/2013 19:43

Yesterday evening I had a lovely chat with the childminder who looks after DD1 after school. She is a grandmother and has worked as a nanny and childminder for more than 20 years.

We discussed various ways of dealing with sleep problems. With her own children she now feels she was too soft. She has seen her daughters take a tougher approach with I think 2 of her grandchildren and says they got into a better sleeping habit more quickly.

She was so encouraging and helped me work out a plan of what I would do last night. This was so helpful to me since I have family here who can help.

DD2 is now asleep in her cot so now I need to persuade DD1 to go to bed. She is a master of procrastination.

Hope everyone has a peaceful night.

RunningOutOfIdeas · 24/05/2013 19:54

Oops. Meant I have no family to help.

I do think at this age some structure to the day does help. DD2 has her first bottle at 6.30 - 7 am. At nursery breakfast is at about 8.30. She has a bottle at about 9.30 and then a nap. This is usually between 30 mins and 1 hour. Lunch is started at 11.30. Then DD will sleep for up to 2 hours. She has milk sometime between 2 and 3pm, depending on her nap time. If the nap after lunch is short, she will fall asleep again after her milk. Tea is at approx 4.30. I give DD her bedtime bottle as close to 7pm as possible and try to get her settled by 7.30.

Cavatina · 26/05/2013 10:28

just popping in to report that sleep has improved beyond recognition, we have one happy and rested baby, and I managed to rest too. Hope you are enjoying the sunshine and the long weekend.

woundbobbin · 28/05/2013 20:36

Hello everyone.
Did everyone have a good bh?
I went to hay I left dd with my dad & was gone for 5 hours I've never left her for more than an hour before so I'm pretty pleased with myself she had a great time with dad and I really enjoyed hay always makes me feel like I need to go back to uni & watch less rubbish on the tv!
We had a lovely BBQ on Sunday and managed some day trips despite the rain yest & today.
Sadly dd sleeps worse at my parents than she does at home so we are pretty tired - still she's in bed now. Fingers crossed for a good night.
Glad sleep is better cava is that using controlled crying??
Hope everyone ok Grin

woundbobbin · 28/05/2013 20:37

Ps if any of you use ocado they've got a good Ella's kitchen deal on at the moment.

Cavatina · 29/05/2013 20:50

wound we did what the paed suggested, it was not as bad as I thought it would be, she now wakes up once and easy to settle back to sleep. Tonight (night 5 since we started) I fed her kiss said good night and left the room and she was asleep within 10min no crying at all. day naps also easy, she figured it out really quickly.
What did you see at Hay?
We had a boring weekend as dp was not well but managed few nice walks.
We are off on hols for two weeks on Monday really excited, if a bit nervous of flight..

woundbobbin · 30/05/2013 16:03

We saw will self & Melvyn Bragg at hay they were both excellent it was very busy though ( dunno why I went on a weekend given I'm on mat leave)
It's Eddie Izzard tonight I'm already feeling nauseated about going but we've had these tickets since before dd was born so I must go. She will be fine with dad repeat she will be fine with dad!!!
Cava very impressed with your improved sleep may give it a go myself after last nights waking every time she touched the cot - eventually slept at 2 in my bed Hmm

RunningOutOfIdeas · 30/05/2013 16:36

Cava glad your nights have improved. DD2 is still being a challenge. Her naps at nursery have improved - she was refusing to settle in a cot without her keyworker present. I have had some good nights and some bad ones.

When DH came home he did not help at first. He thought he was being helpful by getting up to her at night, to give me a rest, but he was giving her the attention she was after. Last night we went back to my routine. Hopefully if we stick to my way of doing things, we will get better nights soon.

woundbobbin · 30/05/2013 22:30

I did it Grin (not expecting anyone to be interested) but yay me. Dd was fine only woke twice & dad got her back down both times in 5 mins.

Donnadoon · 31/05/2013 06:10

Hello ladies can I join please ? I didn't even know this thread existed doh...my dd was born on the 7th October same as Thechicks Grinand Dupains but I've been on the November thread because she was due on the 1st of November.

Thechick · 31/05/2013 06:44

Yay Donna. Welcome. This thread moves at a very different pace to the nov one but the ladies are lovely.

Congrats Cava and Wound on your sleeping babies.

Cavatina · 31/05/2013 12:03

Hello welcome donna
wound well done! Glad miniWound was ok, it is such an important relationship with the grandparents, they enjoy each other's company, my older children loved spending e summers with my parents, unfortunately babyCava is notnso lucky as they live in another country and pil no longer around Sad.
Did you enjoy Eddie? very [jealous]!
running it took us two nights to break the habit (about 2h first night and 45min second night before she settled into sleep) but indeed it is important to stick to the plan both of you. Fingers cross she cracks it I think babies are very smart and love to learn new things even if it is harder at first. I felt I have to, as a parent, to help her learn and have a good and restful night sleep. I am under no illusion there will be sleepless nights but hopefully not that many.
chick how is lo, is he feeling better?
Have to do some shopping and make list of things to pack for babyCava for the hols, getting a bit stressed, but I am sure will be ok at the end. Hate airports and all the security etc, not sure whether pouches of food are ok to take on the flight? They are 130g so over the 100ml limit but is not liquid is is Confused. Any ideas?

woundbobbin · 31/05/2013 15:01

Hello Donna welcome to the little thread of people who's babies rarely sleep. As soon as your baby sleeps you graduate to the Facebook group I think dd will be 2 before I get there.
Cava Eddie was brilliant and dd was more than fine with my dad - it is such an important relationship my parents adore her my in laws are less interested but I'm not that worried about that cos I don't really like them. Grin
I'm not sure re food on planes I have a friend who has to peg feed her baby and they make her taste all the food in front of security - I'm aware that doesn't help at all sorry! Are you exited for holiday aside from the airport etc?

slightlyroundthebend · 31/05/2013 15:13

Hello lovely ladies sorry I've been awol, broken phone and no sleep and teething baby have all kept me away.

So how are you doing the sleeping thing cava? I'm desperate, sleep is getting worse here not better but haven't a clue about sleep training. What do you do when they wake in the night? Sshhh pat?? Sorry I'm sleep deprived but no idea how to do it. Idiots guide??

Lovely weather here been sat in garden with a coffee and ds, hope it's like this tomorrow too :)

Donnadoon · 31/05/2013 16:50

Hello everyone thankyou for the welcome :)
Sleep here is hit and miss ... Usually put down between 7 and 8 although last night she was full of beans until 9 pm ?? And then wakes anytime between 3 and 5 am so not too bad really.
I only b/f at these times too (at put down and waking)
Throughout the day she has 3 bottles of Aptimal 8 ozs
And food wise she has tried a bit of everything fruit and veg wise but typically has breakfast every morning either half a weetabix or a bit of ready brek mixed with formula
Then mashed banana or scrambled egg for lunch
Then I go easy at dinner time as I'm still trying to go slowly and not bung her up so to speak so its just a little yogurt or half an Ella's pouch of fruit
Gosh that was a bit mammoth sorry :)

RunningOutOfIdeas · 31/05/2013 20:49

Cava well done for cracking sleep in 2 nights. I have now been really struggling for 2 weeks. A few nights have been ok but most either have me getting up every hour or a 2 hour crying session or a mixture of both. I just don't know what to try now.

All I can say is that if DD2 applies the same level of persistence and determination to anything she does when she is older, she is going to be incredibly successful.

Cavatina · 31/05/2013 22:43

hahaha running we have some future nobel laureates on this that for sure Grin
donna how do you serve the eggs? I would like to try babyCava before we go on hols but I like them runny and we are supposed to give them well done no? I am yet t try weetabix, I luufs the stuff but bit worried will constipate her..
slightly lovely to see you sorry sleep is rubbish, See my mammoth post on Friday (24/5) for what we did, let me know/pm me if you want to ask anything else/more details.
Excited about the hols, mainly because weather report is for SUN! cannot wait, went to JL today and spent some silly money on holiday purchases which I am sure we can do without + ordered some lovely summer outfits for babyCava from miniBoden, she was more excited about the wrapping paper Hmm but I made her try them all and she looks super cute, even if I say so myself (silly mummy emoticone)
off to bed now, we had some champers to celebrate dd1 finishing her finals at uni, graduation day on 16th July, yayeeee!
good night is wished to one and all!

slightlyroundthebend · 01/06/2013 08:21

Morning ladies!
Wow is all I can say to last night wow.
So we took him up for bath at 6:30 then cuddles then bottle, burped him and he was weary ( hasn't fallen to sleep feeding for a while he usually snuggles into me on rocking chair) so I gritted my teeth, said night night and into cot. He cried I stayed strong "sshhh night night honey, I love you, it's sleepy time" kissed him and walked out (need a vomit emotion to insert here) came in at intervals of 2,4,6,8 & 15 mins, after an he he was asleep. He woke up 45 mins later, I went in did same as above but he was asleep in 4 mins. Woke at 12:40 for feed - this is about right/usual so fed and repeated above after 45 mins he was sleeping soundly. He woke up at 6:10 when he'd usually get up! Feel like New woman after nights of horrendous sleep, will persevere again tonight.
Just wanted to say thank you cava and lovely ladies for giving me the confidence to try this without feeling like I'd failed as a mother, it was the hardest night of my life but I needed to do something ory relationship with hubby would of suffered from being so tired and agitated.

Donnadoon · 01/06/2013 09:04

Hi Cava I've given her scrambled egg , very well cooked mixed with cows milk, no salt or anything. She loves it. And the weetabix is with formula.
I know what you mean about constipation so I tried her with ice cube sized amounts at first, and gradually increased.

Cavatina · 01/06/2013 15:04

slightly great news, hope you got some sleep too.
donna thank you will try tomorrow breakfast.
Weather rubbishh here, was planning a picnic but having tea and biscuits in front of telly while babyCav napping.
Have a nice weekend ladies

Cavatina · 01/06/2013 21:17

Just had a sneaky read on the Nov babies thread, omg these chicas can chat.. wonder whether there are any other october babies on the Nov one..
wound how are you getting on? hope you are getting some sleep..

woundbobbin · 01/06/2013 21:51

Not having a good one so far. Dd woke up this am a bit out of sorts she is normally remarkably cheerful at all times (even in the middle of the night) but we've barely got a smile out of her all day. She is quite hot to touch and has just wanted cuddles she fell asleep on the sofa earlier just leant over head on DH's stomach and gone she has never ever done that. So I've just managed to get some more paracetamol in hopefully that'll bring the temp down and I've put her in a very thin bag not anticipating a good night as even if she sleeps I expect I'll be bobbing back & forward to check on her Hmm

Donnadoon · 01/06/2013 21:59

cava yeah there is loads because a lot of us were due in November and had been together since the BFPs in the antenatal threads. Thread moves way too fast for me sometimes but they are all lovely too.

Cavatina · 02/06/2013 05:39

wound sounds like the virus babyCava had recently, no coughing or anything else just temperature and feeling poorly, she was also off her food so I just bf her and gave calpol and nurofen. She turned a corner on day three. Hope you got through the night ok.
BabyCava slept from 7.30 to 5am, woke up once at 11ish had some water and back to sleep, feeding her now and hoping for some more sleep, or shall I start packing...flight tomorrow getting a bit stressed...
