Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

It's also the sheer enjoyment of trampling over the graves and memories that I can't handle.

One of the worst arguments I ever had on MN was with two posters who insisted that no women were sexually assaulted or raped on Oct 7th
Just utter denial.
That was so shocking, I was absolutely incredulous.

We'll support each other tomorrow and stay well away from any hateful threads/posters.

We will.
We'll make sure that Jewish posters can have a decent memorial thread, should they choose.

Was murder and kidnap ok then?

To think women can do that. Owen Jones? Yes, that's expected of that snake.

Oh don't. Of all the obnoxious posts on MN those rape/sexual assault deniers - on a site mainly aimed at women of all places - made my blood boil the most.

How low are some people prepared to go? Unbelievable.

At first I thought the deniers were ignorant, until I realised that they simply don't care. Women are not only commodities to some men, it seems.

Was that the one in the feminist section of all places?

I just found it unbelievable and profoundly depressing

No, I think maybe chat? It was horrific.

Jewish women obviously can't be believed.

Corbyn, Galloway, Polanski - shag, marry, kill?

You have a very twisted sense of humour sometimes

Suddenly missing the lockdown conversations and arguments about school closures

🤣

I've had that argument (like all my arguments) on CITME.

It's why I won't formally assign myself to feminism. I don't like the different branches that somehow end up pitting women off against each other. Trans' rights leading the way on that one. Equal to that has been the degradation in death of Shani Louk. That's not feminism.

I'm dreading tomorrow tbh. I'm reminded of that wanker wearing the number 7 Hamas Man U shirt in the aftermath. I'm getting tearful suddenly remembering the Bibas family.

Something about this year seems more intense again, like the first anniversary.

I blew up a little at an annoying poster elsewhere earlier. Definitely feeling rather sensitive at the moment. Will probably take a break from internet tomorrow. Self preservation and all that.

You know I know exactly what you mean about this anniversary - like something is planned.

The main drivers of the Green Party now appear to be antisemitism and misogyny.

The posters barely giving a second thought about Shani Louk as a person. It was like she was disposable to both them and Hamas, just an empty body. The posters would get irritated at any mention of her and down grade what happened to her as somehow an irelevance. It was so disgusting.

Again she was someone's daughter and this is a parenting site

Ah, there was definitely one giving it a go in the feminist section, which was unbelievably grim.

Back then it would have been Matt Hancock, Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings.

Take care tomorrow x

I couldn't agree more, @AlwaysRoomForGin. I came on this thread and expected the usual awful arguments. It's been a refreshing change!

Likewise. Opened it with the sort of trepidation that I click on CITME threads, only to find. outbreak of sanity in an increasingly bonkers world.

Seconded.
Tomorrow is going to feel particularly grim, knowing that there are so many people out gleefully 'protesting for Palestine'.

There is an elderly lady of my acquaintance who I spotted on a 'We stand with Palestine Action' a year or so ago. She's the kind of person who wants to do good in the world, so goodness knows what mental gymnastics she's doing to justify attacking policewomen with sledgehammers.

noblegiraffe · Yesterday 22:51

I hope, that as with the (rather unexpected) reaction to the Green vote, normal people will see the planned marches tomorrow and be rightfully and vocally disgusted. Like, they'll connect the two rather than writing off the marches as some isolated extremists.

PurpleThistle7 · Yesterday 23:04

I’m hiding tomorrow. I refuse to go to work with the hate march past my window and I refuse to work from home as I’m too angry. I intend to curl up on my couch with my crocheting and watch ER reruns for hours. And hopefully stay off the internet but expect I’ll fail on that. I also am super scared this year - feels like something else is coming.
