Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

I was just looking up the polls for the by-election, and I didn't realise that George Galloway was standing as well as Polanski, which may split the antisemite vote. They're spoiled for choice!

That's actually funny in a twisted way.

I know! It really is.
Zack Polanski and George Galloway, what an appalling duo.

Just seen a rather confusing photo

Anyone know why David Collier was at the Green party conference?

Mothin Ali hugged him with a smile so I doubt he knows who he is and that he is a Zionist. Possibly he went undercover or something I suppose? Rather confusing.

One of the things I'm struck by as I read this thread is how measured, how eloquent and how willing to listen to each other everyone here is. It's so unexpected (sadly) and so far from the usual spouting of vitriol and hatred that has been rife on MN in respect of any Israel/Jewish adjacent thread, especially over the last 3 years.
It is so very welcoming and refreshing; whilst we may all be from different walks of life, different parts of the world and a veritable melting pot of cultural/religious (or not) demographics, there is collective humanity and humility; a willingness to engage respectfully. Again I thank you x

I agree and thank you everyone for your posts and sharing your thoughts. I'm enjoying your company on this thread x

Hmm which one would you vote for if they were the only 2 politicians left alive in the world 😂

Voters please pick between old evil con artist with dodgy friends and new evil con artist with dodgy friends

There has to be a large number of people out their wondering what they have done to deserve such an amazing choice of candidates. Personally it is like my version of hell.

(Actually have had to edit this to add Jeremy Corbyn, then it would be my version of hell)

It's just horrific. I'm actually quite scared at how it's all going. It's as if sectarianism, racism and intolerance are just taking over.

David Collier was 100% undercover there to report on the vote and whatever antisemitism he saw. I mean, he's the guy who dug out the Hamas connections of the participants in that BBC Gaza documentary and got it taken off air, so there's no way Mothin Ali would have had that photo taken with him if he knew.

What? Is David trying to educate them? That's lost on me but looking forward to his report.

Polanski. He is just a Useful Idiot rather than a true antisemite.

Yes, why are people surrendering rights that it took years to gain? Tolerance, liberty, equality. For women to be equal to men, for Jewish people to live without fear, for gay people to live as they please?
It took years of hard work and courage, and people like the Greens are just trashing it.

Corbyn, Galloway, Polanski - shag, marry, kill?

I've zoomed in on the photo and his ID badge says "David Collier" so he wasn't making much effort at being undercover tbh.

Well, he's not exactly dealing with razor sharp minds.

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 21:29

I'm dreading tomorrow tbh. I'm reminded of that wanker wearing the number 7 Hamas Man U shirt in the aftermath. I'm getting tearful suddenly remembering the Bibas family.

Good point but with Galloway you only have to leave out a saucer of milk and he turns becomes very creepy but harmless
