Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Me too. Never voted conservative before but I admire Kemi's strong clear stances in the face of so much insanity.

Yep she’s been strong on this.

In North Scotland? Where? That's fascinating.

Oops! I didn't realuse you were in Scotland. I was talking about Northumberland. That is usually considered up north on MN. Sorry if I missed your location. It is a very long thread.

caringcarer · 05/10/2026 13:18

It always amazes me how any people could vote Green. They are racist pure and simple. Hopefully people will see this mor clearly now.

KeepOnCleaning · 05/10/2026 13:20

The head of Jewish Greens is considering leaving. That should prompt serious reflection within the party.

Jewish members deserve a clear answer about where Polanski stands and how he intends to protect their place in the party. General statements about equality aren’t enough to restore trust.

Yep the Jez fan club is alive and kicking still today just some of them have moved home temporarily to the Green party

What are the chances of Corbyn coming out and condemning this vote?

He must be fuming, this was supposed to be his party.

Bringemout · 05/10/2026 13:22

Yeah I think it’s the classic islamo/left alliance which results in a giant shit sandwich for the left and pretty much everyone else. Tbh I just don’t understand why anyone would look at any of it and think, yup seems reasonable. It’s like they think this sort of thing hasn’t happened before.

it’s all so depressing.

Because if you hate capitalism, the West and blame all our problems (and hate) on the rich and the Jews then it's the natural party for such people. Adolf would have been proud of them.

Sadly there are quite a few people that support this view.

I think it is important to note that large swathes of pro-Palestinian Greens who happily have voted for this motion, who will be organising and attending marches on the 7th October are not Muslim.

This appalling antisemitism isn’t simply a Muslim issue to be weaponised by Islamophobes. There are plenty of non-Muslim hard left Israel-haters who are antisemitic.

That is no longer a fringe extremist view but party policy, of a party whose leader and MPs are not Muslim.

Oh, definitely.
I'm just watching the documentary on Roger Waters put produced by the Campaiagn Against Antisemitism.

Then of course we have the hard Left types who drank the Soviet Kool-Aid about Israel, zionism etc because it fitted very nicely into their existing jigsaw of antisemitic beliefs.

The chances of it causing ' serious reflection' are minimal. The leadership are already saying people should ' move on' from it. I think it's too late for decent people to ' stay and fight' from within. They have already lost the fight, and it's no longer a place for Jews. They need to leave the Hard Left and the Islamists to it, welcome Zahra Sultana and her Trotskyist/SWPbuddies and set up something else if they still care about the environment more than they care about Jew hate.

SuTissues · 05/10/2026 13:47

What an awful state of affairs. Can you imagine if any other party voted in such a motion, what the reaction would be? There'd rightfully be outright condemnation. But because it's come from the " peace loving, hippy dippy, open borders" brigade , then apparently it's absolutely fair and just. For a party to vote through a racist motion, calling others racist is beyond hypocrisy. It's sheer lunacy.

As David Baddiel has shown, Jews Don’t Count.

Not enough Jews to be worth making a fuss about them.

Best not defend the Jews in case we upset a larger voter group.

(Yet, apparently, Jews are disproportionately powerful.)

Has nobody heard the post-Holocaust reflection attributed Pastor Niemoller?

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Why did he not speak out? Was it just because he was not a member of the group? Was it because he didn’t think the group was that significant? Or was it because he was afraid of the bullies?

What would Burnham have said? His first pronouncement when he became PM was to declare support for Gaza. Burnham and Labour are on the same page as the Greens on this issue.

That makes much more sense! I was pretty sure there wasn't a secret Jewish community in the North of Scotland!

Yes, it's crazy. But they see Israel as being like South Africa under apartheid. The Jews are the Afrikaners and the Palestinians are the black majority. So for them condemning Israel is exactly the right thing to do.

BunfightBetty · 05/10/2026 14:00

Bringemout · 05/10/2026 09:56

I think also what doesn’t make sense is criticism of Israel for being an ethno state, whilst gaza and the west bank are overwhelmingly muslim. Also if we are saying that only indigenous populations (and here I disagree that Jews are not indigenous to Israel, archaeology demonstrates this) can live on particular pieces of land then aren’t they just agreeing with ethno- nationlists, like the ones who would like to deport every single ethnic minority from the UK.

I can never get my head around that either.

It's a remarkable double standard that has never been explained. In the absence of explanation, I can only assume it's some sort of weird colonialism/racism that applies a lower standard of expected conduct if somebody is brown and not Christian. After all, we can't expect them to operate to the same lofty standards that we do, can we?

Yep Burnham is currently trying to court a few different camps but ultimately he is as about as far left as you can get. Therefore basically a modern day Green without all the misfit packaging.

We got Jez 2.0 via the back door and a lot of people have not caught onto that yet.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2026 14:04

Are there any hustings coming up ahead of the Holborn/St Pancras by election?

5MinuteArgument · 05/10/2026 14:09

MeanwhileTime · 05/10/2026 12:01

Has Andy Burnham said anything about this? I don’t think I’ve seen or heard anything from him on it. I wonder whether or not he is actually going to comment.

I expect he agrees with the Greens that Zionism = racism. The left of the Labour Party would definitely agree with this and they seem to be in the ascendancy now so Burnham needs to appease them.

They need to appeal to Muslim voters so Burnham coming out and saying 'No this is antisemitic' ain't gonna happen.

localnotail · 05/10/2026 14:11

I have been stunned this morning after reading this, and I am still stunned. How can a party openly call for the erasure of a sovereign democratic country? Not only that, but they are obviously aware what will happen to the Israelis in this "one state" Palestine - most, if not all of them, will be murdered overnight.

This is as antisemitic as it gets. Its horrifying. Greens are now officially worse that Reform, Restore and all other bottom dwellers.

moderate · 05/10/2026 14:13

Twiglets1 · 05/10/2026 12:53

Don't agree with that.

But I've been wavering between the Conservatives or Labour (I'm a "floating voter") and I'm leaning more towards the Conservatives.

Kemi seems stronger than Burnham at taking a stand against antisemitism, amongst other things.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a Kemi-led Tory government at this stage. I just don't think they can get the votes. Labour already rely too much on the Islamist vote, and if they need a coalition they'll get into bed with the Greens.

The key parts of it are also concerning. It talks about fighting back as legitimate. The greens here mean October 7th? How else can it be read.

Yes, and the fact that the pro-Palestine lobby are planning a demo for October 7th says everything about their utter contempt for Jews and their desire to cause maximum upset to them.

We've had 'resistance is justified' posters up here for years. Yes they mean 7 Oct. When families were tied together and burned alive, murders were uploaded to victims' Facebook accounts, babies were kidnapped, Palestinians cheered and spat on mutilated corpses, and a 9-year-old girl was kidnapped from her home and raped until her pelvis dislocated. These people celebrate that.

Yes, when I used to support the anti-apartheid struggle, if there had been an event like Oct 7 where the black majority had massacred 1200 whites, my support for them would have stopped immediately.

climbintheback · 05/10/2026 14:28

Who wants to deport every single ethnic minority - they certainly don’t want to deport the hard working ones who learn to speak our language and follow the law - surely it’s the criminals, overstayers, the thousands on the watch list, foreign criminals on release, small boat arrivals and such - I for one am happy with that.

The only comforting thing is that the Green Party will never win a GE with policies like this. Might as well rename it at this point.

I believe that most people in the UK including me are in favour of a 2 state solution and this will not be a popular policy country wide.

They may not win a GE but in larger cities where people vote in family/ partisan votes they will get MPs and councillors who are openly anti semitic.

i posted on another thread about the outcome of the leftist alliance with Islamic forces in the 1970s, and the horrific outcome of that situation.

There is a grim sadness to the fact that so many musicians and artists are anti semite, failing to acknowledge the only place they could stage a concert with singing and dancing would be Israel or in the hypocritical state of Dubai.
