Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

When I was watching the stand off in the Garvachy Road, I noticed the Palestinian flags and the Gaza slogans. It seems that the Irish Republican cause - in some instances - is combining the two issues. I suppose it explains the Irish football team's response to their Israeli opponents.

No it does not. Very few Irish people would describe themselves as republican, especially outside NI.

(It’s not an all Ireland team. It was ROI playing. You were watching events in NI.)

Ok, thank you for that, I was conflating two things, but I thought there was a link; I know about the Orange Order and the Garvachy Road stand off. It was shocking because there has been 28 years of peace (in NOI). However, what was noticeable (as I said) was the flags and banners were about Gaza and Palestine.
I am aware that the Irish football team is not linked to this, but it's interesting that they have a particular, and similar, stand.

It's clear that the Greens and Labour are slugging it out for the Muslim vote. They both see how demographic change will impact this country as Islam grows in power and influence.

It's a very sad development not just for British Jews but for Britain as a whole. We better get ready for a whole lot of sectarian politics, curbs on free speech and changes to our culture coming down the line.

Thanks for the correction - I have lived most of my life in London and Hertfordshire where Jewish people are a significant part of the racial mix. I accept that there are large parts of the country where there are very few Jewish people, but (for example) someone living in Cornwall might not always have lived in Cornwall - they may have lived and/or gone to university somewhere else.

I think if you’ve lived in N London or Hertfordshire you’d defintely be extremely unusual to have not met a Jewish person. So many people in some parts of the country have maybe never really left their local area, so it makes sense they’ve never knowingly come across a Jewish person especially now where people are much less likely to share that information about themselves

I don't disagree with you. I had the misfortune to be in Birmingham city centre when one of the marches for Palestine was going on. Some of the chanting was anti Semitic and vile, the police did absolutely nothing

The police are frightened of the mob. They know they are outnumbered. They are frightened of tackling the far left who are itching for a fight and frightened of tackling Muslims in case they say or do something that might be construed as racist or Islamophobic and their job, livelihood and pension will be on the line.

Better to pretend it's all fine.

Just looked up the list of candidates and they are an eclectic bunch.

There is an alternative for those who genuinely want to vote based on their environmental concerns. Clare Fischer representing the Climate Party.

Also a strong looking Labour candidate in Sagal Abdi-Wali, who has * *been a councillor for Camden Square since 2022.

Your mistake was linking it to republicanism in ROI.

We do tend to support Palestine for humanitarian reasons — our history of being colonised means we see links with a people who have been subjugated. The vast, vast majority don’t support terrorists whether they be IRA or Hamas or anyone else. Of course we don’t!!! I hate it that people seem to assume otherwise. It’s completely wrong. Oct 7th was absolutely horrific and I cannot say how sorry I am that it happened.

I also can’t help but to think with each additional bit of sectarian hate vomit we get closer to a reform government which is absolutely not a comfortable place for me and not something I would particularly like to see.

Ok. My grandparents were from County Mayo and I spent many a happy time there. My grandfather had quite the repertoire of republican songs, but that dated back to before partition.
I apologise for misspeaking and any offence caused.

I think you are spot on—hence my earlier post about Biradari. Whilst clan-based politics may be standard practice in countries like Pakistan, it actively undermines democratic integrity both locally and within British Pakistani communities in the UK.

At its least controversial, birardar leads to candidates being selected based on family lineage rather than competence. At its most damaging, these closed patronage networks enforce social conformity and suppress reform—specifically targeting Jewish people, disenfranchising women, marginalising LGBTQ+ individuals, and entrenching conservative norms that run counter to pluralism and minority rights. I’m genuinely concerned that we underestimate the power of the Islamist vote.

The Greens are actively aligning themselves with these potentially horrific policies. Every other political party should be highlighting this step back into medievalism and commit to ensuring they do not gain any kind of foothold into mainstream government.

Agree 100%.

I’m of strong southern Irish ancestry too and I am appalled at the sectarianism by some of my very vocal and disproportionately representative fellow countrymen over the whole issue.

Unfortunately I think the real danger to this country is that we're getting closer to an Islamic takeover. It'll be slow, like a boiled frog, but it's happening. It's also the more fundamentalist form of Islam that is taking hold. The rise in antisemitism is coming from Islam and its groupies on the far left.

There's ten times as many Muslims as Jews in the UK so if you want to be on the winning side it makes sense to suck up to Islam and a big part of that is hating on Jews.

As bleak as things may look today, in the bigger picture the Greens have rendered themselves unelectable to the mainstream. I'm in London and During the locals people voted Green as a protest citing Starmer, student fees, Palestine and generally nothing is getting better. The Greens have now fully outed themselves and I know replaying some of the conversations I had that the scales will have fallen from the eyes of most of those voters. Good riddance. The trash has taken itself out and can join Your Party on the dung heap.

I truly hope this is the case, however it wouldn’t surprise me if this motion potentially attracts voters from Labour and the fringe parties.

I wonder how many long standing staunch Greens are dismayed at the swift hijacking of their party, because one thing is for sure, they ain’t trying to save the environment anymore.

This. Exactly.

Everyone is too scared of being called out as a racist because we have a genuine concern about radicalisation. It has to be called out strongly - for all races and religions. We all have as much right to live freely and without fear. No single one has the right to dominate others.

This is a stretch. You overstate the electoral importance of Muslim voters and the extent to which attitudes towards Israel-Palestine are driven by religion. Non-Muslims have strongly engaged with the Palestinian cause.

It doesn’t follow that Labour and the Greens are primarily competing for a “Muslim vote” or that Britain is inevitably heading towards sectarian politics.

Denier, our (useless) MP trying to extract herself from this shitshow when she was out in Bristol knocking on doors, asking if people supported Israel, only a few months ago.
