Farage resigns as Clacton MP and will contest the by-election

Nigel Farage is resigning as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency - which he will stand in.

He says he wants the people of Clacton to decide whether he is worthy of representing them - not the mainstream media who he feels constantly attack him personally as well as the party he represents.

More public money spent on Reform by-elections.

As far as I'm aware, he has been pretty much invisible as their MP and is like the Scarlett Pimpernell where the HoC is concerned. The outcome of the vote will be interesting.

Honeyhonayboo · 07/07/2026 14:42

What a ridiculous waste of money.

What a ridiculous waste of money.

Absolutely!

Perhaps he would like to pay for the by election! Why should taxpayers have to fund this when we’ve already had to fund a deliberate by election in Makerfield and a mayoral election in Manchester just so politicians can have it all their own way. Surely there are better uses for public funds.

BIossomtoes · 07/07/2026 14:45

He should have to pay the election costs from his personal fortune.

itwasyourshowallalong · 07/07/2026 14:45

What A Cunt 😡

Agreed - if nothing else he needs to pay back his MP salary

Nasty little grifter

WhatWouldMyMamaSay · 07/07/2026 14:47

He knows he’ll get re-elected. This way, he looks like he has done the decent thing, and is very much a man of the people after being re-elected.

Absolute scum.

Lonelycrab · 07/07/2026 14:47

What a load of bollocks

If you’re going to resign, resign.

Attention seeking slimy twat.

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 14:49

It does seem like more money the country can ill afford.

Though tbh I will be interested in the Clacton result and if they do vote him in again, that will give him more of a mandate to carry on.

Imagine the Conservative party in particular will throw everything at defeating him in this by election.

Every single voter in Clacton should stay at home and refuse to vote, just totally ignore the whole thing. Who the hell does he think he is?! 😡

Except Reform voters aren’t exactly the smartest of the bunch so I suspect they will fall for this nonsense and feel the need to show their support.

As someone on the other thread posted, if he wins, he will treat it as a green light to get away with anything and everything. If he loses, he will call it an establishment conspiracy. A Trump special.

Bullandbear · 07/07/2026 14:51

What about the Manchester mayoral election?

That wasn’t necessary and nor is the cost.

Nah. They should vote him out.

Terribleio · 07/07/2026 14:52

If I were the other parties I’d be tempted not to run. Say it’s a total waste of taxpayers money as he’s already the sitting MP.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/07/2026 14:53

Weird decision.🤔

LIZS · 07/07/2026 14:53

Agree he is an arrogant narcissist - meanwhile the tax payer wastes £££££ on a needless by-election.

Crunched · 07/07/2026 14:54

Just like Makerfield 😔 Individuals interested in themselves, not the good of the UK

soddingspiderseason · 07/07/2026 14:54

He is trying to wriggle out of the scrutiny process if the dodgy money he’s been given. I hope to goodness that common sense prevails in Clacton and he gets booted put. He’s completely corrupt.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 07/07/2026 14:54

I hate him and I hate Rupert Lowe but Lowe's response to Farage is 100% accurate:

Farage has proven one thing today and one thing only - everything that he does is about one person.

Nigel Farage.

The people of Clacton do not need a media circus descending on their town over a busy tourist season because their MP has made a series of bad decisions.

He should have declared that five million pounds. He knows it. We all know it.

Now he is going to weaponise a by-election to distract from that.

This is going to cost the taxpayer a fortune.

A quarter of a million pounds. Eye-watering sums of money.

Think about what that money could do for the people of Clacton.

Will Farage fund it out of his own pocket?

Because he bloody well should.

This is making a mockery of our entire democratic process.

He made bad decision after bad decision, and concealed money in a way that has spectacularly backfired.

A by-election will not deflect from that fact, and nor should it.

Dolphinnoises · 07/07/2026 14:55

There was a very high chance the investigation into his £5m bung would have meant a by-election anyway - a suspension of more than 10 days leads to a by-election. Strong “you can’t fire me, I quit” vibes.

Interestingly though, it won’t stop the process. Which would mean a by-election, which if he wins re-starts the process, and then if that leads to a 10 day plus suspension, possibly yet another by-election!

DeftPlumLurker · 07/07/2026 14:55

Will the other parties stand a candidate?

meh - so what if he calls it an establishment conspiracy. He will no longer be even an MP at that stage so it wouldn't really matter what he thinks.

You would have to blame those who support and elect him, if he does retain his seat in the by election. Stating the obvious there, but still....
