Farage resigns as Clacton MP and will contest the by-election

Nigel Farage is resigning as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency - which he will stand in.

He says he wants the people of Clacton to decide whether he is worthy of representing them - not the mainstream media who he feels constantly attack him personally as well as the party he represents.

Right, I'm trying fast to catch up with all this!!

Just assuming he lost the seat, can he still be the leader of Reform?, but he wouldn't be an MP, so no longer able to be the next PM??
Is that right?

They could trigger a by-election somewhere else like Labour did for Burnham I suppose?

Yes that's right.

If he loses the seat he won't be an MP therefore not eligible to become the next PM.

(unless a lot of manoeuvring like we saw with Andy Burnham who somehow is about to become our next PM despite not even being an MP until mid June).

But even that was a lie. He said he's never been photographed outside said house and it been in the papers before when you can do a Google search to find out that's totally untrue. There are several such photos.

Presumably although his daughter lives there, he actually owns the house...one of his five.

I don't know the ins and outs of it but I don't think the media should drag MPs families into this. He also alleged that Sky reporters had been harassing his family and trying to contact his daughter.

And Sky has categorically denied this.

Have you not noticed that a lot of what Nigel says actually isn't true? Like all these attacks. You'd think if he had his house firebombed and attacked like Starmer did, as Nigel said had happened today, he'd have called the Police? Yet when he mentioned it previously Police confirmed no report had been made...

SwedishEdith · 07/07/2026 15:37

He alleges lots of things. Always claims there was some sort of cheating in elections he doesn't win. Easy to throw allegations around. That's his MO. The eternal victim.

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 15:38

Responses from two other political leaders:

Rupert Lowe says "I will be making an announcement later today about Restore Britain’s plans for the Clacton by-election."

Polanski says Farage "knew he was heading towards a by-election anyway so has pulled the trigger early".

Hoping that it will be a Restore vs Reform slugfest and all other parties decline to stand candidates.

What about the voters of Makerfield who picked a Labour MP but then were used as pawns for the advancement of Andy "Eyelashes" Burnham ? (Who didn't even run on a Labour ticket ! )

I don't see anyone get their knickers in a twist about that. 🙄

A lot of people got their knickers in a twist about that.

but the MO of politicians at the moment appears to be they can do whatever they want the F they want.

I obviously don't know whether it's true that Sky reporters have been harassing his family and trying to contact his daughter or not. I do however find it believable considering what the media are like when they are chasing a story.

I don't. I want the Conservative party to stand a candidate too as think they have the best chance of defeating him.

I’m a bit baffled how an MP is allowed to call a by election for any reason other than their permanent resignation from that seat. Why on earth is it allowed? Or is it just something no halfway decent politician would do so they never made a rule against it happening?

He’s just a sleazy chaos merchant. Good at disruption and destruction, singularly lacking in positive constructive achievements.

It is absolutely crazy that an MP can resign just to stand again, it’s completely unprofessional.

MargoLivebetter · 07/07/2026 15:44

@Twiglets1 do you? Name me a suitable candidate from the Tories who could stand against Farage at the moment?

Funny how Farage never said one word before about any journalists constantly doorstepping other MPs at private family residences. Only doesn't like things when it's turned on him.

If he actually ever got into Number Ten, you can miss goodbye to any scrutiny or decent rules for MPs.

Most people don't think it's right that MPs being paid almost £100k plus expenses have second jobs. Yet Farage is all for it, of course. Which is why he won't attend the forthcoming debate on the issue and ignored the letter sent to him by the MP that tabled a motion to stop MPs having second jobs.

No need for me to repeat what you already said or to give too much mileage to what Rupert Lowe has to say about anything.

Restore are even worse than Reform.

Yes I do think the Tories should stand against Farage in this by election and am pretty confident that they will. Who it will be I don't know. That will be up to Kemi, and I expect she will make an announcement about it soon.

Yes. But. When everyone available is a twat - the one that is least twattish, tends to get elected.

Labour - awful
Conservatives - 14 years of awful
Green - woman hating suicidal empathy lovers
LD - Ha.

So exactly why would people not vote for him?

There are £5m reasons and a convicted criminal

2024 Clacton numbers https://electionresults.parliament.uk/elections/3392

Reform have doubled their UK polling average since May 2024 (14%to 28%)

There is no way on earth Nige rolled the dice without knowing he's going to win - and he will, and be unassailable when he does, and quite capable of forcing a general election after that....

I know who I would rather have running the UK economy - it's certainly not, "more of the same shit that never works" Burnham.

I'd quite like someone who can count to twenty without removing their socks in charge - It's the economy. It's always the economy.

Your Nige couldn't even manage to count to five and think 'ah, thats declarable'.

MrsShankly · 07/07/2026 15:59

Ugh Farage is so loathsome.
He is massively money grubbing (on Cameo doing video shout outs for a few tenners!!). People like that can be paid by anyone, making them very vulnerable to corruption. He doesn’t actually want to be PM, I think, because then he’d have to declare everything and it would all come out..

The national leader of the Reform party in Wales was caught accepting thousands of Russian money in exchange for pro Russian lobbying and he was jailed for a decade. It’s that serious in the Reform party.
Where’s the big anti corruption investigation in Reform, after that happened? Nowhere. Farage doesn’t want any threads to be pulled https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yd878ejqko?app-referrer=deep-link

Now we have to waste taxpayers’ money on running a byelection just so Whining Nigel can say ‘see! nobody minds where I get my money from’.

Actually most of us do care. We want politicians to be honest and declare everything. Normal people don’t want any bribable MPs. Too risky for all our futures.

Former Reform in Wales leader Nathan Gill jailed for pro-Russian bribery

Nathan Gill, 52, is sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison after admitting taking bribes while an MEP.

It is interesting. Possibly a master stroke, as long as he wins.

Then again if he loses he may feel thank God no more visits to Clacton.

He’s been to America more times than he’s been Clacton god love them.
