Farage resigns as Clacton MP and will contest the by-election

Nigel Farage is resigning as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency - which he will stand in.

He says he wants the people of Clacton to decide whether he is worthy of representing them - not the mainstream media who he feels constantly attack him personally as well as the party he represents.

Wonder if the people of Clapton will appreciate these games.

It is absolutely crazy that an MP can resign just to stand again, it’s completely unprofessional.

Agreed,

But it will attract huge media interest, debate, and it delays any legal process.
Just like Trump.
Everyone will be so busy arguing about the election that the corruption allegations /investigations will fade into the background and of course he will give plenty of poor me interviews.

It does seem like more money the country can ill afford.

Though tbh I will be interested in the Clacton result and if they do vote him in again, that will give him more of a mandate to carry on.

Imagine the Conservative party in particular will throw everything at defeating him in this by election.

Why will it give him a mandate to carry on. He’s accused of wrongdoing it’s for the investigation into his many gifts to come to a decision not Clacton. It’s just a distraction tactic out of the Trump playbook. If they have any sense the other parties won’t parties won’t put candidates forward leaving him to fight it out with Count Binface.

The people of kingmakerfield didn't seem to mind.

fluffiphlox · 07/07/2026 16:28

He really doesn’t mind where his money comes from. He made a fortune as an MEP in an institution he didn’t agree with.

What a ridiculous waste of money.

well the public want democracy , so yea change the system

This is appalling!!
it’s not a fair vote without the investigation result.

surely that’s a refuse-able situation to allow him to stand again. What’s changed if we haven’t had the investigation result?.
Resign if you want, yes Nigel. But what is a by-election with the same candidate actually FOR, what are we asking the constituents to vote about, if the key issue of potential corruption isn’t actually resolved by election day? Farage should not be allowed to stand while he’s under investigation.

I have such massive respect for Daniel Greenberg and his team having to carry on their work with all this self serving Farage shite going on. Thank you, if any of you ever look here!

We the little people (unlike multimillionaire Whiney Nigel), are now having to pay 250K for the by election

  • God knows how much to pay for Greenberg investigation, all necessitated by Farage’s behaviour- but this investigation paused because of this byelection now.. After that, we’ll have to pay another 250K for running the next by-election if and when the Greenberg investigation finds Farage corrupt (which judging by F’s current behaviour seems most likely) and then Farage has to resign as an MP again ..

I don't think the question they are considering is even whether he is corrupt. It's just whether he obeyed the disclosure rules. There is nothing to stop him from receiving money from convicted criminals or from crypto billionaires.

He could have just apologised and updated the record.

The irony is that he does makes himself look corrupt by trying to hide his donors.

MLMsuperfan · 07/07/2026 16:30

So democratic to resign in order to delay an investigation.

TopPocketFind · 07/07/2026 16:23

I thought the Tories already started targetting Clacton a few days ago after the Cottrell article

According to a Telegraph political correspondent, yes.

Preparations have begun for a by-election in Clacton in the event that Nigel Farage is found to have breached parliamentary rules.

The Telegraph understands that preparations for a contest are already under way, with the Tories laying the groundwork for a challenge in the heavily Brexit-voting area.

Oh. So she is being rather economical with the truth? Surely not!

So democratic to resign in order to delay an investigation.

I suppose he doesn't have enough MPs to just vote away investigations like Starmer did/

The spirit of democracy is not to quit for the sake of re standing and waste large amounts of public money.

And particularly to use this in order to avoid accountability.

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 16:35

Count Binface says it succinctly : "Game on, Nige".

My joy would be boundless if Count Binface won a two way contest.

Maybe only Binface should stand against him?

No - the previous context was a by election in the event that the investigation had been allowed to proceed and Farage had been found to have breached the rules. Not this weasely game he’s playing at public expense.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/07/2026 16:38

And Russia allegedly hacked his phone but he didn't report that either

He's confused 'hacking' with 'my handler forgot to use Telegram' there.

KittyCorncrake · 07/07/2026 16:38

dajen · 07/07/2026 14:45

Perhaps he would like to pay for the by election! Why should taxpayers have to fund this when we’ve already had to fund a deliberate by election in Makerfield and a mayoral election in Manchester just so politicians can have it all their own way. Surely there are better uses for public funds.

He has

Farage resigns as Clacton MP and will contest the by-election
MLMsuperfan · 07/07/2026 16:39

He can use a small part of his Trump money to pay for it I guess.

I doubt very much that electoral law would allow that. He’s showboating as usual.

KittyCorncrake · 07/07/2026 16:38

Nice one. He must know that isn't allowable spending for party funds and can't actually happen 🤣

KittyCorncrake · 07/07/2026 16:38

Maybe Labour will follow suit with Manchester Mayoral election? Doubt it.

Badbadbunny · 07/07/2026 16:42

BIossomtoes · 07/07/2026 14:45

He should have to pay the election costs from his personal fortune.

Then so should Burnham!

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 16:43

What has politics become in this country? Like a bad soap opera.
