WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

I've just had a look at the blog and want to say a quick thank you to MmeLindor for the support, and to all those who RTd the #frother2.

Hullygully · 07/01/2012 13:59

mme lindor is a bit fab

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 14:01

I absolutely agree Hedley and I'm furious on your and garlic's behalf. I can just see Twitter using your letters to justify their actions but without them they have to come up with something themselves.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what either of you said. It's all true or opinion which is not libellous. #libelreform is a good hashtag if it does turn out to be what we think it is. Some good tweeps using that.

If there has been a complaint from cllr Coleman then that has the potential to be very damaging for him.

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 14:58

Can we get a bit frothy on twitter please? It's all gone a bit quiet. Plenty to froth about on @tmc_frothers and #frothers #frothers2.

Please don't #frother because you will end up in foaming milk and cappuccino world Grin

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 16:02

Oh just heard on news that someone has been arrested for the Stan Collimore tweets. But the tweets are still there aren't they? Confused

MmeLindor. · 07/01/2012 16:04
Blush

Strange that - the one guy - his tweets is still online.

OP posts:
IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 16:07

Collymore. Not Collimore. Doh!

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 16:07

I think he's only just been arrested. Disgusting if they're still there and our frothers have been banned Angry

MmeLindor. · 07/01/2012 16:17

Just checked this guy. Scroll down to 21.12 (ish?)

I wish that sort of term was automatically picked up and banned on Twitter but I'm not sure of the context of that tweet. Some people have reclaimed that term like the feminists reclaimed cunt in the 70s but it's hard to tell on there because there's no tweet it's referring to.

It's horrible reading it on there regardless of context Sad

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 17:08

ooh I see one of the frothers2 is back with a new identity! I won't blow your cover.

garlicfrother · 07/01/2012 17:23

Te, when you have the energy (!) please can you give me some links so I can get a grip on what you're saying about the deficit & interest?
Thank you :)

garlicfrother · 07/01/2012 17:23

Heh, Isla Grin Thin cover, innit.

IslaDoit · 07/01/2012 17:27

I couldn't possibly comment Wink

MmeLindor. · 07/01/2012 18:06

Yes, just thinking I need to go learn more about this. Will ask dh.

Btw, go and watch the warren Buffett interview/docu on bbc iplayer. Tis fab.

I think warren would be a frother.

Loved what he said about the markets and not listening to them.

erm... okay. hang on let me try and find a good link!

I had a google earlier because there was a lovely one I found a while ago but of course I can't find the damn thing.

This is what prompted my post: gilt sales

TeWihara · 07/01/2012 18:54

got sidetracked already... economic benefit of holding olympics is dodgy www.guardian.co.uk/business/economics-blog/2012/jan/06/london-olympics-not-economic-boon

MmeLindor. · 07/01/2012 20:28

Yes, I read about that last week. Not on the Guardain though. Somewhere else.

plus, with the £/EU exchange rate as it is, UK is popular as a destination anyway. It is FAB for those earning in Swiss francs atm.

garlicfrother · 07/01/2012 20:43

Thank you, Te :)

I need some Frothing help, I think. I keep meaning to put this down, but can't leave it alone ...

I want to do a post with some crystal-clear charts, showing:

[a] Money is not being wasted on scroungers/cheats, against all currently received wisdom
[b] Money is being wasted on stupid things like MP's lunches, taxi fares, blah, blah
[c] Money is being given away to those who don't need it - tax discounts to the rich, handouts to 'providers' for managing the effects of cuts, etc.
[d] Money being spent to save money - ATOS farrago, non-existent It system for Universal Credit, anything else

... plus anything about insufficient jobs, workfare, housing cock-ups, needless military spend, etc, etc.

What I want to do is show graphically how the focus is on all the wrong items. It's quite difficult because, without knowing everything, it needs to be true enough that some smart-arse couldn't dismiss it with a swift comment on - I dunno, agricultural reform or something. That's only going to happen if the numbers are very big and haven't missed out anything major.

So, quite a project. It might turn out to be unwise or un-do-able, which is why I need your input! Any thoughts?

TeWihara · 07/01/2012 20:48

hmm.

a) fraud is what 1.7bn atm? there are links floating around for that.
b) could go back to the foi releases from the expenses scandal and tot it up or see if anyone has already, though system has of course supposedly changed since then.
c) probably a major project on it's own. we don't know about everything... you might have to foi this yourself.
d) same again.

It's an impressive challenge!

garlicfrother · 07/01/2012 20:52

I know Shock Thing is, I get all frothy about something and then the little voice in the back of my head goes "but where's the money going to come from?" It's like a more comprehensive version of what Shirley did with her family.

Just realised I missed the NHS off my list. I know fuck all about the NHS.

MmeLindor. · 07/01/2012 21:05

Oh, I have had an email from childrensdocmum about NHS post. will go and read.
