Believe in some kind of divine power but not sure what exactly. It's gender-less though.

I wasn't raised under any religion. I've not been baptised as my parents thought I should have the opportunity to decide for myself. As is true for my DD.

mamsnet · 21/06/2010 21:42

Raised a Catholic.

Now an Atheist.

Very bitter about years of my life wasted on that shite.

HerBeatitude · 21/06/2010 21:42

No
But I do think if there is a God, s/he loves atheists better than anyone else.

Rosieeo · 21/06/2010 21:44

No. I went to church as a child for a few years with my Gran but never got on board with it. Stopped going asap. I don't understand it at all.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 21/06/2010 21:46

Believe in who?

scrimble · 21/06/2010 21:48

mamsnet Me too. And I'm reminded of 'that shite' every Sunday when I hear the next door kids being forced out to church. What an utter waste of their time.

No.

MrsJohnDeere · 21/06/2010 21:58

No.

Brought up by very enthusisastic churchgoers (Methodists). Knew for sure by the age of 10 that I didn't believe in God.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 21/06/2010 22:03

Also a bright!

I really have problems understanding why a healthy, educated, modern person would believe in the supernatural.

Yet, they do. It's very strange.

This is how I see it:

We once used stone tools to cut down trees, which sort of worked with a great deal of effort. Now we have chainsaws. Why continue to use a stone axe?

It is the same with religion. We once used it to explain and make sense of the world, as well as providing a calander, a means of preserving and transfering knowledge, ordering society etc.

Now we have reason, science, pocket calculators and a legal system. Why continue to use a stone axe?

Flisspaps · 21/06/2010 22:03

Hmm. Most of the time I don't, but then I have moments of panic where I wonder what is going to happen to me 'afterwards' if there IS and I've spent all this time not believing

DivineInspiration · 21/06/2010 22:05

I'm Jewish and believe in God, but not in terms of a man with a white beard sitting in the clouds throwing thunderbolts. I don't go to synagogue regularly, and I don't really pray as such; I talk to God sometimes as though He were standing next to me in the room.

My God is not separate from me. My God is not in charge, deciding what I will receive and what will be taken away, when I will struggle and when I will overcome. My God does not judge or punish me. That's not how I connect to my divine essence. Not in archaic language, and not in the words of ritual or obedience. I believe that God just is. He doesn't do much. And I'm nearest to God when I make a connection with other people - there is a little bit of the divine in all of us.

nagoo · 21/06/2010 22:08

Definitely not. Used to wish I did.

Had 'reverse epiphany' last year, so now I have utter faith that there isn't God, Heaven, Hell, Angels or any of that stuff and I don't feel that I'm missing out on anything because of it.

Does make it hard to answer my DS (3) when he asks about death though.

You people that do believe, what do you think will happen when you die? Will you still be 'you'?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 21/06/2010 22:11

No

bilbobobbins · 21/06/2010 22:13

nagoo - yes.
Interesting what you said - you "have... faith that there isn't God, Heaven, Hell..." I agree with that, it's faith either way

Jackstini · 21/06/2010 22:14

Yes, am a Christian. Wasn't specifically raised that way by family but wasn't discouraged.. Had contact through youth groups/friends and made the decision myself.
