No.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 21/06/2010 22:19

I disagree biblbo.

Athisem is to religion what baldness is to hair. An absence of, not an alternative to.

ifancyashandy · 21/06/2010 22:20

See SolidGoldBrass I'm with you on that. I just don't understand how intelligent, well read, educated people can believe in a 'devil' who lives in the centre of the earth and a god who lives on a cloud / behind Pearly Gates. I'm not ridiculing but such a faith is based on a medieval construct. You know - from when we believed the earth was flat and dangled off a chain which was attached to gods wrist. The scolars of the Renaissance pretty much debunked these myths theories.

HOW do you believe? And if you believe in god, do you believe in the Monachy and that they have been annointed and appointed my him? Genuine question.

I do - the whole lot: God, heaven, hell, angels, demons...

nannyj · 21/06/2010 22:23

No

bosch · 21/06/2010 22:23

Yes a christian

exexpat · 21/06/2010 22:29

No. Raised Baptist, but an atheist since the age of about seven.
Since DH died I have sometimes wished I could believe in some kind of afterlife, but nothing can make me believe it is more than wishful thinking.

undercovamutha · 21/06/2010 22:31

No - and I find it hard to understand how intelligent people can believe in God (sorry!). I totally agree with Ifancyashandy.

But saying all that, I occasionally do have the odd superstitious moment (such as not wanting to 'tempt fate' for example)!

And I do enjoy a good hymn sing-song at a wedding or funeral .

willsurvivethis · 21/06/2010 22:34

Yes, Father Son and Holy Spirit

Believe Jesus died for our sins and rose again on the third day.

Was baptised at Pentecost 1998 not long before my wedding.

Married a physics student, now a vicar's wife!

ifancyashandy · 21/06/2010 22:36

Ah, see I agree with you Undercover - I quite like the theatre of religion (and I like quiet contemplation) but, again like you, I don't read anything more into it than 'Ooh, his purple robes are pretty'

bathbuns · 21/06/2010 22:38

No

But I used to be a rather devout Christian. Now I can't understand how I ever used to believe in any of it. It seems just as nonsensical as voodoo or thinking the Greek gods and goddesses exist. But that's indoctrination for you.

teaandcakeplease · 21/06/2010 22:40

Yes, brought up going to a C of E/ Anglican church, still believe and go to church.

No idea what'll happen with my 2 DCs as they're both small. Their decision though, I have no plans to force them to tow the line and accept my faith. Up to them.

Can't answer any questions on this thread, all I know is I do believe and always have done. I'll leave the theological questions to more intelligent people than me.

Alambil · 21/06/2010 22:45

I believe because I've witnessed it.

I've seen angels, I've seen people healed - I have prayed and they got healed, there and then... and also in the same room / meeting I was in (and not the Reinhard Bonnke type rallies either)

Pancakeflipper · 21/06/2010 22:46

Raised an atheist.

I believe in God. It's personal - the joy he can bring and the support he gives me. I find it a great stress release and it's free. I don't always understand what he's up to but I try to keep trusting him. I sound like a nutter but I am actually pretty sane honestly.

I am a disgrace to my mother according to her but I am the happier person.

I struggle with church and religion big time though. I lost a sibling whom adored when I was young and it obviously challenges things like this. It's only recently I have accepted what happened and feel some acceptance and a little peace instead of pure anger.

My religious knowledge is poor but I know when God is near me. I do go to lovely church but I avoid a certain section who I see as projecting a hugely negative image of God.

BaronessBomburst · 21/06/2010 22:47

No. Absolutely no bloody way. The bible is a load of misogynistic claptrap written by men hundreds of miles away and hundreds of years ago. Why anybody takes it seriously in this day and age, I've NO idea!

My mother is a Jehovah's Witness. She converted when I was about 5. Don't even get me started on how she ruined my life, childhood, family. If she ever tries pushing that stuff on DS it'll be the last time she ever sees him.

I'm prepared to believe there's something. I don't know what to call it, but certainly not 'god' in the accepted context and I doubt it's sentient. More of a force like gravity or electricity. And as I'm not really into physics I don't particularly care!

niminypiminy · 21/06/2010 22:56

Yes.

It's not a question of whether God exists in the same way as a physical object, or a leprechaun, or any other thing that the universe might contain.

God is the grounds for any kind of existence, the condition that the cosmos exists at all. Anything else exists because God exists.

It's not the case that we used to have religion to explain the world and now we have science, because it's utterly mistaken to say that science and religion are incompatible. There are lots of religious scientists -- many of them physicists or mathmaticians.

And I believe in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

I talk to my dcs about God and pray with them, they come to church (though not every week). Why wouldn't I want to pass on my faith? Everyone wants to teach their children about what they believe to be good and just and true.

Milliways · 21/06/2010 23:00

Definately Yes (Christian)

Imisssleeping · 21/06/2010 23:03

Brainwashing to the highest degree.

When my ds was seriously ill I was asked if I was going to get him christened. When i explained that I wouldn't be as I don't believe in god, then was told a story about someone they knew who had lost one dc so quickly got the other one christened as they couldn't bear the thought of them turning up in heaven and god not letting them in !
I said if god was the sort of person to turn a little child away then he wasn't a very nice god!

It's just one big fairy story and I find it strange that people believe it.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 21/06/2010 23:04

I know a mathmatician who consults Tarot cards, ergo, Tarot cards are compatabile with maths?

MilkNoSugarPlease · 21/06/2010 23:05

Yes, I'm comforted by the idea of their being a god. I believe there is someone or something up their, watching over me. I like that

I don't believe in religion though, nor the idea of heaven and hell, angel or devils etc

Was raised Atheist.

ifancyashandy · 21/06/2010 23:13

Niminy sorry, but I truely don't believe that everything exists because god exists. I understand faith is a comfort to some and I can see how attractive may be but it's due to that fundamental point of Christianity (and other religions) that it loses me.

It just seems so incompatible with intelligence. That really isn't meant as an insult to anyone. I just don't get it.

JaneS · 21/06/2010 23:25

'I'm not ridiculing but such a faith is based on a medieval construct. You know - from when we believed the earth was flat and dangled off a chain which was attached to gods wrist. The scolars of the Renaissance pretty much debunked these myths theories.'

on several grounds

I do believe, but agree with others that God is not male.

diplodoris · 21/06/2010 23:30

Yes, I'm a Christian.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 21/06/2010 23:46

No.
