Only this weekend - there's improvement but they desperately need to get her blood sugar levels down.

Hmm, the Trinity...no, I can honestly say that it's a mystery to me. Sorry

Notquitegrownup · 12/05/2008 19:59

Hi Mary - I seem to remember reading in a Christian book on healing about the human trinity - body, mind (ie will) and spirit (emotions, memories) - and how we need to let God rule each of them . . . it's going away from an exploration of the Holy Trinity, of course - (guess you are preaching on Trinity Sunday?) but might be a starting point for some fresh thinking.

Francis Macnutt in Healing - that was the book! I think I've just given it away to our church library - I'll see if it is still there, if you are interested.

DutchOma · 12/05/2008 20:18

The best thing i heard about the Trinity was the comparison with a three leaf clover, joined but all part of the same entity. But you might call that "done to death". otherwise I'm with Amber and it is a bit of a mystery, probably meant to be, so we don't get too clever

MaryBS · 12/05/2008 20:55

Oh, its definitely a mystery, and personally I don't think its someone anyone can claim to make sense of... but it doesn't make for much of a sermon. I keep thinking of the film Shakespeare in Love, the line "I dunno, its a mystery".

NQGU - if you could find the book, that would be great... sermon has to be written by Friday evening though, so it doesn't leave a lot of time. I've seen some similar writings with a similar theme.

DO - I've already promised our vicar that the sermon will NOT be on the shamrock, so it rules your idea out Thanks anyway.

I think a joke is out of the question too... there only seems to be one Trinity joke, so hands up if you've heard it...

"Jesus said, Whom do men say that I am?
And his disciples answered and said, Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elias, or other of the old prophets.
And Jesus answered and said, But whom do you say that I am?
Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Logos, existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated, in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to his creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father, and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, each member of the Trinity being coequal with every other member, and each acting inseparably with and interpenetrating every other member, with only an economic subordination within God, but causing no division which would make the substance no longer simple."
And Jesus answering, said, "What?" "

MaryBS · 12/05/2008 20:57

I found this quote, which was quite funny...

In the pulpit, Trinity Sunday tends to take on one of three manifestations in the trinitarian churches:

  1. Ignore it, and pray Mother?s Day falls on it. Remember to buy roses.
  2. Use every iota of Greek you have ? (there?s a joke there) ? and abuse the congregation with how smart you are.
  3. Get the assistant or a supply preacher to deal with it.

Hmm... I guess I fall into category 3!

CaptainDippy · 12/05/2008 21:55

can you pray for patience for a really eager to please yet very frustrated 4yo who knows that for the next 18mo she as to be restricted, yet wants to have fun with her friends!!

And for me. Happy clappy church doing me head in when the world is not such a good place!

thanks!

CaptainDippy · 12/05/2008 21:58

Poor love WM Will pray. xx

Weegiemum · 12/05/2008 22:16

thanks CD

Its nice to know people care. Struggling with church as people are not engaging with dd2's problems. Found her running about in Sunday School this week though I had TOLD them that she cant!

My head going a bit nuts. The world is crap - why are we still singing happy songs?

DutchOma · 12/05/2008 22:21

Sorry to hear about dd2 WM. How are the poxes? Can she swim again? As for 'happy' songs in church, that is really hard, because the psalms are full of 'unhappy' songs. Songs of people who were really struggling and God knows all about it and doesn't mind us shouting at Him. Only church so often doesn't 'get' it and that makes it really tough.

MaryBS · 12/05/2008 22:55

As one who has shouted at God a fair bit lately, I still sing happy songs, because they are a light in the darkness. Further they should show a belief in the absolute goodness of God and trust in his plans for us. (Sorry if that sounds a bit preachy, but who wants to sing miserable songs when you are miserable? Unless you're the Smiths of course...)

PandaG · 13/05/2008 08:22

hello all.

sorry you are feeling crap WM. I know exactly what you mean about singing happy songs when the world is crap. BUt the words of the songs are still true, God is good, even if it doesn't feel like it. I feel such a hypocrite sometimes, singing happy positive stuff when I feel naff, and rubbish is going on around me, but I do know it is true somewhere.

praying for DD, and that you will see God in your situation WM.

hugs all x

Mary - I've found the book, but can't find any reference to the human trinity in it. I was sure it was in that one!! I'll keep reading.

Two other analogies. I recently read that the Trinity is like Water which can be manifest as water, ice or steam - all the same substance, but different manifestations.

As a student, I was taught to explain the trinity by thinking of a cake, which contains eggs, sugar and flour. You can's see them in a cake but they are all there, and it wouldn't be complete without any of them.

But can't you just use Trinity Sunday to talk about the (often) least talked one of the trinity and get everyone excited about who and what the Holy Spirit is and can do . . . ? Or to talk about some of the many ways there are of describing God in the Bible, and choose your favourite few. Anything which tells people more about the character of God is going to be challenging and exciting, I'm sure! Praying that you will know what to say.

(PS The greek word for Spirit in Genesis 1, when the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters, is female. {I like that one!})

ZipadiSuzy · 13/05/2008 10:09

Prayers for you all.

Sorry another busy day ahead.

All went well with resignation, (they have filled the vacancy already) - sceptical I will make a success of Swimming teaching but hey, I feel its the road God has shown me.

Will catch up tomorrow, as working till 10.30pm glad I'm changing paths no more late nights!

YIPPEE!!!!!

Notquitegrownup · 13/05/2008 10:10

Oh and good morning everyone else! Sorry, got carried away brainstorming the trinity!

CD - Prayers for little 'P's hacking cough, and prayers for more hours in the day for you, so you don't have to panic!!!!

ZipadiSuzy · 13/05/2008 11:37

Mary - You always say the right things, re: singing happy songs as lightness in the darkness, blardiblardiblar makes such sense! wish you were preaching in our church, I might be a better attender

CaptainDippy · 13/05/2008 11:47

You make me giggle Sooz Little P started wailing so I went in and say with her on my lap. I gave her some cough mixture and I prayed for her. It is the 1st time I have prayed outloud for a very long time It felt good She settled back down and I've only heard her cough a couple of times. Thank you for your prayers guys - keep 'em coming So what next for you Sooz!!?

Roseylea · 13/05/2008 13:27

Hi all. I'm praying for everyone on here, esp for IWNLTBM.

Mary I agree with what you say - but even I have my limits - I remeber being firced to sing as a teenager: "I'm inright, upright, outright, downright, happy all the time" - does anyone else remember that ridiculous, obviously untrue, song??!!

Hope you're feeling a bit brighter WM.

Mary I am trying to find the Adrian Plass passage about Trinity Sunday but so far I haven't found it in the books we have here.

My sermon on Sunday seemed to go well, and I did a radical thing (for us anyway, it's probably old hat to you) - I got people to pray in little groups for each other, and everyone really got into it - so much so that I had to tell them to stop several times when it was time to move on!

Well I need a bit of prayer...I've been offered an interview next month at a Vicar Factory for deferred entry for 2009. So this is a bit scary as it's pretty soon! I've also been invited to an evening at a different Vicar Factory, not an interview as such but a pre-interview (as in, they'll decide during the evening if they want to offer me an interview) - that's also next month. This is in the midst of major decorating at home / new kitchen being fitted next week. So I have to fill out application forms for both factories - whoops, colleges! - in the next few weeks. If you could pray that God really will guide us, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

amber32002 · 13/05/2008 14:01

A Vicar Factory??! My word!

Roseylea · 13/05/2008 14:04

That's what my vicar calls theological college!

Weegiemum · 13/05/2008 14:28

I'm feeling good - the sun is shining! Dd2's poxes are a lot drier today. I put out a call on facebook to college friends and have enough childcare to manage for the next 2 days no bother - people are great!

I know that I have to praise God in the midst of suferings - mine or other peoples. But I think that sometimes we can put our heads in the sand and live and worship as if other people and other problems don't exist. My church is pretty happy clappy and I am fed up hearing something deep and meaningful preached to be followed by a cheery upbeat "we all love God he is so cool" type song. Dh feels the same and is going to email the senior pastor about it, cos it is doing his head in worse than me!

The trinity? Wow! I did a whole course on the trinity last term. It was fabbbbbbby! The best thing I learnt was about the three persons of the trinity practicing perichoeises - mutual interpenetration. they are totally part of one another and cannot be seperated out. It is a relationship of total mutual submission which they each choose to have towards the others. And this means that the Son chose to come, voluntarily, submiting to the will of the Father.

But outside of time, before creation, there was still the Trinity, mutually loving and in community with one another. The triune God chose to create, out of the love they had for one another. But in creation, they knew the price - for God knows everything and thus knew that humanity would fall. Thus the Trinity chose to create, with the son knowing what the price (death) would be, (in revelation He is called the Lamb who was slain from before the creation of the world) but did it anyway, knowing that it would be worth it.

It blows my mind.

You can't find an analogy for the trinity - it is too complex for our minds, a true mystery. The Baptism of Jesus is a good place to look - the son is baptised, the spirit descends, the father speaks. It is something that I feel I just have to accept as true.
