Some of the hymns we sing are meant to prick the conscience, as surely as the sermon sometimes does.

I agree on the "analogy" thing WM, I haven't found one that comes close to how I feel about the Trinity, except perhaps a plain equilateral triangle.

This is a bit of what I've got so far:

Has anyone ever noticed how we automatically assign roles? How that when we give thanks for Creation, we automatically thank God the Father? Similarly, when we ask for forgiveness, we ask God the Father, the Father figure, for forgiveness? How when we seek guidance on the way to proceed on something, we seek out Jesus, as our teacher and redeemer, and how when we feel uplifted in worship, we talk of being "filled with the Holy Spirit". Yet, rarely will we pray to the Holy Spirit directly, we are more likely to ask "God our Father" or Jesus to "send the Holy Spirit".

Our natural inclination is to instinctively recognise the distinct personalities of God, as represented in 3 persons, yet still one God. To me, it FEELS right that we should be like this. It is only when we attempt to reason why it should be like this, that we end up with "God the neapolitan icecream" or "God the three leafed shamrock" or "God the three states of water", none of which can possibly even BEGIN to hold a candle to the actual reality of that which IS God. We are told we are made in God's image, but we should not try to make God in "our" image.

MaryBS · 13/05/2008 17:19

Just to add, I came up with the "three states of water/shamrock" bit before anyone suggested it, having come across those ideas - so I hope no-one feels like I'm picking on them.

On it...

MaryBS · 14/05/2008 07:10

Podmog - how are you feeling this morning? Did you get some rest last night?

CD - how's little P? Did she have a better night last night?

Can we all pray for baby Charlie? He was born in a rush yesterday, 7 weeks early, weighing 3lb 5oz, as his mother had pre-eclampsia. Mother is OK, baby as far as I know is OK, but its early days, and he's so little...

Praying for IWNLTBM, that God gives her strength and that she may feel His love for her.

NQGU - meant to say that as last Sunday was Pentecost, the sermon was all about the Holy Spirit. I will be able to refer back to last week, but I think my vicar is expecting a sermon on the Trinity. I think he's given it to me as a challenge just to see what I can do with it.

Things are starting to take shape. At the moment its just a jumble of ideas, I just need to pull it all together. I do appreciate everyone's help on this though! Thanks!

Hello

Love the first paragraph of the sermon, Mary. Hope you are going to develop that.

Weegiemum · 14/05/2008 16:59

proud mummy
Dd1 and ds have come home from school today with the loveliest reports. none of my teacher radar was going off when I read them!

So am very proud Mummy!

Dd1 asked me today whether Adam and Eve had belly buttons, so we are going to have a bit of theological chat after tea!

Roseylea · 14/05/2008 19:41

I had a "mostly proud but slightly paranoid in case the teacher thinks we're alll religious nutcases" moment last week - in dd's school book she'd had to say what her favourite book was, and why - so she said her favourite book is the Bible and it's special because she reads it with Mummy before school every day!

podglet · 14/05/2008 21:34

Please can you read this ladies, I really need you.

Praying Podglet,

even if you don't call the police, you should still get out. I know you probably feel like the rug has been ripped from under you, but you can rebuild your life without him, and the short term uncertainty HAS to be better than a lifetime of abuse. He is such a coward, no-one should have to put up with that .

It has to be your decision though, we will support you whatever you decide, provide an ear for you if you want to talk, and pray for God to protect you and the children.

iwillNOTletthisbeatme · 15/05/2008 05:13

more prayers needed x

MaryBS · 15/05/2008 05:17

Prayers for you, iwillNOTletthisbeatme, is there anything I can do? {hugs}.

In the name of Jesus Christ,
Who walks every journey with you
and understands your pain and fear
be renewed in faith and hope and love
Receive God's grace
and the healing of the Holy Spirit.
In HIS name
Amen

(this is for you AND Podglet)

iwillNOTletthisbeatme · 15/05/2008 05:19

you could take this baby away and let me get some sleep

MaryBS · 15/05/2008 05:23

I think we can all relate to that, sometimes... although some days are worse than others - is there anyone who can help you out today, so you can GET some sleep?

{hugs and prayers}

iwillNOTletthisbeatme · 15/05/2008 05:28

maybe.but i dont like to keep asking her.shes done so much for me already.

MaryBS · 15/05/2008 05:32

If she is willing to help, then you shouldn't feel you can't ask. It is friends like these which get you through and make you feel life is worth living. SHE must think you're worth it, even if you don't.

Weegiemum · 15/05/2008 06:39

Podglet - we live too far away to be of any real practical help to you, but are praying for you and will do anything you need to help at a distance.

I don't know what you are going through - it sounds terrifying - please ask MN for any help that we can give

xxx

IWNLTBM - I wish I could take your baby away for a little while to let you sleep. I had a terrible situation for a while with not-sleeping-baby/bad PND and also physically very ill. Are there any close by Mumsnetters that could help you out with some babysitting or shopping or whatever?

CaptainDippy · 15/05/2008 09:59

Where are you Podglet and IWNLTBM?? Prayers. xxx

Prayers for me, on ab it of a downer atm. xx
