I mean as in kindest / gentlest?
I was looking at janism and the Quakers and thought they both seem so "nice".
So which would you say is the gentlest religion and why?

It hasn't made me rethink. The trans issue is part of life at the minute. It is new, divisive, and yet to be resolved. It is not a prism through which I view or judge all of life.

It’s not new though, is it? It’s an age old misogyny which says males are prioritized over females. It’s just a modern garb for a very old misogynistic attitude.

I’m with pp, it’s made me look differently at the Quakers too. It’s not that hard to think through what the implications are for women and girls. It says a lot about what status you give to women and girls if you don’t take the time to think that through.

This makes it sound like you think it’s ok to publicly state untrue and sneering comments about people, as long as you don’t do it to their face. That’s still neither a kind nor gentle personality.

What on earth are you rabbiting on about? What did I say that was demonstrably untrue? Also I didn’t claim to be kind or gentle. I expressed an opinion, then apologised because I felt it was inappropriate for the Philosophy/Religion topic. There are topics on Mumsnet where people want to safely and seriously discuss something they have a mutual interest in, without someone like me coming along, not realising it isn’t AIBU, and sticking my oar in. If you think that makes me unkind or something … whatever.

This has given me so much to think about. I really appreciate all your points and thoughts.
Humanism is something I'd never thought about before but does seem to meet a lot of my views. You have to pay to join them which I'm a bit dissapiunred with.
I've also been looking at the salvation army and the Quakers.
A previous poster asked what I wanted from a group? I really don't know! I think it's cos in my head you have to sit in a church. But I can be a member of a community in other ways so thank you for also putting that thought forward for me.

Sally Army are Christian, they as a group do a lot of good work. Quakers initially were a Christian group, but now they accept people of all religions. Quakerism is more of a way of life now than a religion.

The Salvation Army has a long and inglorious history of homophobia.

On the other hand they did spend tens of millions on a new London HQ while ignoring complaints from its tenants about dreadful housing conditions.

The trans thing is new. Misogyny isn't.

My feminism precedes the trans issue. My feminism is based in womanhood. It centres women. Not trans people. I get your personal feelings about Quakers @slantedroof. I posted my own opinion about them. That I did so does not say a lot about anything.Confused Least of all the status of women and girls.

This fails on many levels, not least it’s not a religion, secondly the mocking tone many atheists use in reference to people of faith its proponents are often neither gentle or kind

I dunno, some people are so staunchly atheist (Rick Gervaise etc.) that it's practically like a cult religion.

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 01/08/2024 19:50

I think you maybe on a mission bound to fail if you are seeking the 'gentlest religion' - all religions are of men and therefore open to all the failures of humankind: ego. If all you are seeking is 'gentle and kind' then you may be able to find your tribe but I guarantee that sooner or later one of 'em will appear to be not-so-gentle-and-kind.

Science is not a belief system though.

It's a bit like saying mathematics is responsible for gun death as bullets come in packs of 10/12/24.

Science has no dogma.

Religion is dangerous- because it makes good people do bad things.

Religion doesn’t make good people do bad things. Bad people do bad things.
Bad people will use any cause to justify their actions, it could just as easily be science as religion - look at the Nazis and eugenics. Look at North Korea and their communist regime, an atheist country which sends people to prison camps (where they rarely survive) if they are religious.
People sometimes blame wars on religion but actually wars are all about men and acquisition of power/land.

Buddhism and Jainism

But then the issue with Buddhism is that due to the belief in reincarnation, some children with disabilities are treated very badly as believed to have been bad people in their past life, hence their disabilities. I was shocked when I learned that (in Thailand).
