Favourite Holy Week Hymn

There are always a lot of threads about Christmas carols, so I’d thought I’d start one for favourite Holy Week hymn. I love Holy Week…and go to all the services, or try to! I really like ‘My song is love unknown’. ‘Never was love dear King, never was grief like Thine’. Makes me sob.

All in the April Evening
O Sacred Head

My mum had How Great Thou Art at her funeral as it was her favourite.

Another vote for Thine be the Glory. Will always remind me of Easter services with my lovely Gran

ArnoldArnoldArnoldR · 30/03/2024 22:01

My song is love unknown
Were you there when they crucified my Lord
Glory be to Jesus
Praise to the holiest in the height

We always used to finish the Good Friday service with Praise to the holiest - it is one of my favourite hymns. I love the ones that lay out bits of theology.

O Sacred Head Now Wounded
Christ the Lord is Risen Today

'We remember, we celebrate, we believe' (Marty Haugan) was sung at our Good Friday service yesterday. First time I'd heard it. Beautiful.

Oh such good choices! Hail the festival day and my song is love unknown. You can't be without Thine be the Glory on Easter day (preferably with a trumpeter or at least play the part on the organ or I WILL sing it in)

As a simple children's hymn I like This is the Day (that the Lord has made). And I can't believe nobody has said This Joyful Eastertide. And there is one from childhood Along the Road to Bethlehem I think it is. I think it starts As I walked down the road at set of sun/ The lambs were coming homeward one by one

This year we are having outstandingly dull hymns full of purple prose about blood and suffering and NO Thine be the Glory. On Easter Sunday.

Have just looked it up and it's a Christmas Carol (the little road to Bethlehem) but I swear we used to have it at Easter for the lambs and the sunset. I think it works

Love Be Still for the Presence of the Lord.

We sang Servant King at Mass of The Last Supper which my little DS and I love too!

You might mean All in the April Evening - it's one of my favourites. There is a line "The sheep and their little lambs passed me by on the road"

Happy Easter everyone.

This week we sang "In the cross of Christ I glory" which you don't hear very often but is one of my favourites.

For Easter Day if I had to pick one I'd pick Jesus Christ is Risen Today for the words

Now in Heaven Christ is King
Alleluia
Where the angels ever sing
Alleluia

You might well be right, thanks. I wasn't in the choir then so everything is a bit hazy

When I survey the wondrous cross

We belted out “thine be the glory” at the end of church today. The sun was shining in through the windows and it was truly glorious.

@Abra1t - it's The Merchant's Carol ☺️

Happy Easter all! We flowered our cross this morning, beautiful 💐

Thank you! I’ve been trying to find it for years.

I might have to spend a bit of time on the internet tonight, finding some of these glorious hymns and having a good old sing.

I attended a different Church today, as was away from home, and only recognised 1 of the hymns / songs Shock

I od like learning new songs, but I also think there is no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater and not include any of the wonderful hymns people have suggested on here.

@yoshiblue I’ve not sung the servant king for years! I’m going to look it up on YouTube. Such a great one 😊

Also love be still for the presence of the Lord
