Favourite Holy Week Hymn

There are always a lot of threads about Christmas carols, so I’d thought I’d start one for favourite Holy Week hymn. I love Holy Week…and go to all the services, or try to! I really like ‘My song is love unknown’. ‘Never was love dear King, never was grief like Thine’. Makes me sob.

Can anyone remember a Holy Week hymn that had lines something like, A shout, a cry a thousand high, a thousand lust voices….[something] Jerusalem rejoices?

My favourite is the spiritual Were you there? For very personal reasons, the final verse was the first solo my dd did as a chorister. It's also beautiful

In Christ Alone. Fell in love with it the first time I heard it in a Good Friday service. Loved it ever since. Newsboys do a lovely version. The version earlier in this thread is good too.

Thine be the Glory - Easter has properly on them!

I do like the Children's hymn 'Trotting, Trotting Through Jerusalem'

I love 'And Can it Be' -which we sung on Sunday.

Passiontide has so many great hymns.

Thine Be the Glory is unbeatable for Easter!

Pretty much all of these. I am looking forward to tomorrow night singing taize chants at the watch near midnight. Very good start to Easter.

I have also been singing the traditional hymn sung at stations of the cross: at the cross her station keeping (Stabat Matar)

I like O Sacred Head too, though I've not sung it in years.

I love "Now the green blade riseth" Love is come again like wheat that springeth green

I can't prove this but I have felt it : there is something in that sequence of notes that resonates in a particular way in the human body when singing it. I have felt it in other sequences too.

My Song Is Love Unknown - such a perfect combination of lyrics and music.

Oh yes, I like 'See What a Morning' too - I'd forgotten about that.

That's my favourite Easter one too; also makes me cry. My other beloved hymn is the Finlandia one... Be Still My Soul.

"Be still my soul" is on my funeral list.

The choir at Liverpool Metropolitan cathedral sing Taize's Stay with me. At the altar of repose. It usually makes everyone cry.
