Favourite Holy Week Hymn

There are always a lot of threads about Christmas carols, so I’d thought I’d start one for favourite Holy Week hymn. I love Holy Week…and go to all the services, or try to! I really like ‘My song is love unknown’. ‘Never was love dear King, never was grief like Thine’. Makes me sob.

I love the music sung at the Chrism Mass.
The spirit of the Lord is upon me,
Blest by the sun the olive tree.
The hymn for the oils.
For Good Friday. The Simpler setting of the reproaches, from the New English hymnal, is lovely.

I can't bear Where you there,
Or amazing Grace.

I grew up with

There is a green hill far away
Without a city wall

As a child (and young adult!) I always thought that the city didn't have a wall and was rather surprised to find that 'without' in this context meant 'outside'!

NannyR · 26/03/2024 12:47

"Thine be the glory" and "oh, happy day"

Lord of the Dance.

My song is love unknown is my absolute favourite. And for Easter Day it has to be Thine be the glory.

squashyhat · 26/03/2024 12:52

Jesus Christ is risen today haaaaaleluiya

waltzingparrot · 26/03/2024 12:52

In Christ Alone
O Happy Day

Fill me with joy, particularly with warm sunny Easter day and spring flowers on the Easter Cross.

YourWinter · 26/03/2024 12:53

Another vote for My Song Is Love Unknown.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 26/03/2024 12:55

Mine is "Christ the Lord is risen, today"

We're singing the Hallelujah chorus in our church on Easter Day

AnnaMagnani · 26/03/2024 12:59

Love an Easter hymn:

Thine be the glory
There is a green hill far away
Jesus Christ is risen today

All brilliant songs. My personal favorite is 'And can it be, that I should gain'

Rainydayinlondon · 26/03/2024 13:01

At school We used to sing Now the green blade riseth

Be Thou My Guardian And My Guide

Gottagottachchch · 26/03/2024 13:38

@Toddlerteaplease i can’t bear were you there either 🙈
also love belting out thine be the glory.
other favourites are when I survey the wondrous cross, and one we sung a while ago during the procession on Maundy Thursday…’Of the glorious body telling, oh my tongue the mystery sing’

I love "Now the green blade riseth" Love is come again like wheat that springeth green

There's a wonderful hymn that the church I currently go to doesn't do which goes Hail thee festival day, blest day that art hallowed forever - Day wherein Christ arose breaking the kingdom of death which I haven't sung for decades since moving away from the town where it was a favourite at my church there.

singingthypraises · 26/03/2024 13:46

Has to be "Be Still For The Presence of The Lord". Most beautiful hymn ever. Also love "Make Me A Channel of Your Peace".
Both beautiful, peaceful and reverent. In keeping with the feeling of the week.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 26/03/2024 13:53

There is a beautiful song that we sometimes sing in my church

There is a Redeemer
Jesus, God's own son
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah
Holy One

Sorry, can't remember all the words but they are beautiful and were written by Keith & Melody Green. Keith was killed in an aircraft accident along with his two oldest children . . . he was in his late twenties, I believe. Melody was at home with her toddler when this happened and was pregnant with her fourth child. I often wonder about her when we sing this hymn and pray that the words she and her husband wrote give her strength

Love that too. Especially the setting that starts of with Noel Nouvelt and turns into 'when our hearts are wintery"

I love "And can it be" - I made a very strong case for including it in the Easter service this year when the worship team were discussing it yesterday, but apparently, it isn't easy to play with a modern worship band. I've requested that they get practising!!

AnnaMagnani · 26/03/2024 15:22

I had And Can It Be at my baptism.

Not actually a Christian anymore but very attached to it as my culture, and still sing the hymns to myself.

Jesus Christ is risen today haaaaaleluiya

I've been humming this all day today, probably as a kick back to whoever chose the songs for Sunday. We have a list of non-trad "worship songs" (mostly crap) and the "Thine Be The Glory". It's hard work being a singer!

FuzzyPuffling · 27/03/2024 19:51

I love Phil Baggaley's "There is a Green Hill in a far away Country".
