For demanding daughter to stop seeing satanist friend

FaithRose · 21/03/2023 01:24

My daughter "Haily" is in her 2nd year of college. She lives with me and commutes, but was talking about getting an apartment next to the school with a friend, "Vicky," as a roommate. Vicky has visited a handful of times. The last time she told me that she's a satanist. So I asked her if she's a member of TST. I was just trying to keep the conversation going and be polite. She said no because she's a theistic and spiritual satanist! We've always been a Christian family, and I think I could handle my daughter being friends with an atheist satanist, since it's just atheism anyway, but theistic is a whole different can of hellish worms. I told Haily that I don't want her hanging around Vicky anymore. While she hasn't come over again I think they're still hanging out at school and after. I questioned her about this and she blew up at me. I can already tell that Vicky has started to influence her as she's been dressing a little edgy and and in a lot of black, which she didn't before college. I don't want her to move in with Vicky and eventually become a satanist! As of now though, is it unreasonable of me to tell her who she can't be friends with while she's still living under my roof? Any advice on what I should do?

I wonder if this girl is on the wind-up. If when I was 19 one of my friends’ parents was a fruitloop devout Christian who preached the bible and strong beliefs at me, I could well seeing myself telling them I was a satanist and finding their reaction Hilarious.

It’s also possible that your daughter just doesn’t share your beliefs and is sick of your preaching and is also happy to be part of the wind-up.

Personally if my mum had attempted to ban me from seeing any of my friends when I was 19 I’d have told her to stick her religion up her arse and gone nc.

Newsflash, clearly your daughter already doesn’t share your beliefs or she wouldn’t be going down this path.

But yes it's offensive to my beliefs, and I don't want my daughter going down that path
You're not very Christian and accepting are you?
Your beliefs are yours and not
for foisting on others.

  1. Ephesians 6:11 - "Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."
  2. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 – "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
  3. 1 Peter 5:8 - "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
  4. 1 John 4:1 – "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
  5. Luke 4:8 - “And Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'”

The idea that the friend might be a neo nazi is something you seem to have made up with no evidence.

Who are you talking about? The hypothetical friend of Ona's hypothetical child? Or Vicky? Either way, I think you need to go back and carefully read and understand what I actually said instead of make up what I said with no evidence.

I've always thought Satan seemed like the better guy even in the Christian bible.

He freed Adam and eve, gave them free will.

He tried to stop Jesus from starving himself to prove himself to his father.

He kinda struck me as a concerned social worker trying to protect kids from an abusive narcissistic father 🤷‍♀️

So YABU I guess, to think as Christians you're above her or she's bad and you're good.

Christians do not think that they are "good". Christians think that they are sinners who have been rescued by the grace of God.

"Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." 1 Timothy.

The Satanist friend. What is there to suggest she's a nazi?

I think it was based on the ops interpretation of the philosophy that Vicky follows and a branch of that philosophy is apparently part of it

Notegoat · 23/03/2023 22:06

Time to step back and let her make her own choices. We all have to make sacrifices …

Fernanfrank · 23/03/2023 22:10

It's all a bit Satanic Panic!

I didn't suggest she's a nazi. Quite the opposite. Ona was getting on my case for my reply to another poster who also misread one of my posts and thought that I assumed that Vicky is a suicidal nazi who gets taken advantage of by pervert gurus. I was just listing out the problems in that community as requested by another poster questioning some of my reasons why I have issues with it. In no way did I accuse Vicky of being those things. I responded that I did NOT assume these things or know what type of satanism she's into as I did not ask her. If you want a play by play of previous posts then please just go back and read the previous post if you need to understand why I said what I said in response to this ongoing convo where people keep saying I'm saying things that I didn't say (If you don't understand basic communication then you're definitely not going to understand that, and I look forward to what you're going to come up with. Lol). But I did NOT call her a nazi.

Now I think ya'll are trolling me.

I don't think so. She told me after I told her that in college whenever I got the chance to go my own way with an essay I would often write about barely known and strange religions or customs. She probably felt safe telling me and I flubbed it up. Never preached at her though.

My mother is a Christian. She tried everything to stop me from wearing black and listening to rock music.

I'm sorry, have I stepped back in time 60 years?

If she's not a nazi or suicidal then what's your problem with her that you want to try to forbid your adult daughter from seeing her?

SwordToFlamethrower · 23/03/2023 23:23

I have a copy of the satanic bible.

The basic set up is don't be a dick to people. Don't Lord over people or animals. Treat people with respect.
If someone hurts you, hurt them back.

Also, sex is great! Enjoy sex with any consenting adult who will have you.

It's pretty cool.

SwordToFlamethrower · 23/03/2023 23:28

Also to add if it isn't obvious, satanists do not actually believe in the Christian Satan/devil etc.

The satanic Church was set up by atheists for 2 reasons.

  1. Atheists don't get to have tax exempt charitable status for being atheist so they set up an imaginary religion to do good work.
  1. Piss of Christians

Thank you very much for this well thought out post. And thanks to those who left similar posts, and also those who sympathized. I think you guys are right. I'm just going to sit her down for a talk on the dangers of nazis, suicide cults, and pervert gurus, and then leave it, as I don't want to turn her away. I'll also lift the Vicky ban. And then maybe I'll get another chance to warn Vicky about the nazis too. Now that I think about it I'm disappointed I didn't say much after learning she's theistic. After all she's a young women out there and somebody's daughter too.

All of the concerns you have listed have also been issues within Christianity at some point or another.

Pervert Gurus/Priests/Vicars/Ministers are still being exposed, but were covered up for years in most of the larger denominations and often preyed openly in the smaller ones.

Heavens Gate or Jim Jones come to mind immediately when you think of Christian suicide cults, but there have been others. They may not be your branch of Christianity but they come under the umbrella.

Antisemitism has a long history rooted in Christianity, the blood libel, the blame for killing Christ etc.

The Catholic Church in the 1930s and 40s was pretty pro Hitler and Mussolini and organised Christianity did little to prevent the holocaust.

These days there are more Christian Neo Nazi groups than Satanist or Pagan ones.

Frankly you get wierdos and psychos in all groups and I wouldn't worry about this one young woman who is probably going through a phase anyway.

Giggorata · 24/03/2023 11:50

This.
Besides aren't they two sides of the same coin? You can't believe in The Christians' God without a.so believing in Satan.

Giggorata · 24/03/2023 11:52

Sunriseinwonderland · 23/03/2023 20:42

I wouldn't worry about it. All the satanists I know only do it for the attention. They are the ones other pagans snigger at.

Oooh, my quote didn't post.
Here it is.

There is a field of thought that the entity known as God is actually Satan but petsuaded believers they were God and banished real God by saying they were Satan.

At least Old Testament God/Satan.

@BishopRock this is interesting. Do you have any links/writers about this? I’d like to read more.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 24/03/2023 13:34

When I was her age all the girls wereWicca.

My DD looked into new age paganism. Didn't last though.

I think you should just watch and wait. As long as this friend isn't hurting anyone/anything, what's the harm?

Viviennemary · 24/03/2023 13:40

Who would want their child to get involved in this. But if its just hot air and dressing in black thats one thing. Satanic practices is another ballgame altogether. Invite this Vicky to your house and ask her a few questions. Hopefully its just a phase

Sounds like a Gnostic heresy. Some of the Gnostic sects believed in a supreme but hidden god as well as malignant deity who created the material world. Gnosticism was considered heretical by Rome and sects influenced by gnosticism were relentlessly persecuted and put to the sword and burnt alive in the name of Christ.

Yes, that sounds about right. But Christians don't like to think about that too much. It's all about how God loves you, as long as you do exactly what the Christians think he says.

I'm sure if someone said no one would want their child to be involved in Christianity you'd be up in arms.
