How can Christians feel they won’t get covid?

My Christian friends keep sending me scripture and videos saying the lord is on the throne and will protect them and they won’t get it.

I find this so hard to believe/understand. Can anyone help?

I'm Christian. I do believe God is always with me but I certainly dont think that means I wont get corona virus LOL

Are you sure they are specifically saying "I wont get it" or are you interpreting that from their scripture quotes?

purplecorkheart · 19/03/2020 18:34

I think it is just your friends tbh

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 19/03/2020 18:35

Also- not all of us think this so perhaps best not to generalise as your title suggests. Its not really on to stereotype all of us based on one of your FB friends

There is a story that goes round church circles:

Drowning man. Boat comes to rescue him. He says no thanks the Lord will save me.

Helicopter comes to rescue him. He says no thanks the Lord will save me.

A lifeboat is called. He says no I have faith my Lord will save me.

Drowns. Arrives at the pearly gates. Says: ‘My Lord why didn’t you save me? I had faith in you.’ The Lord says: ‘I sent you two boats and a helicopter what more do you want?’

FaithInfinity · 19/03/2020 18:39

I am a Christian. We are currently self-isolating because I have a bad cough! 😷 My friends seem to be more about reassuring one another where there is fear that God is above it all which I can get on board with.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 19/03/2020 18:40

@faithinfinity

Exactly! I am praying to not succumb to fear because that is horribly destructive and damaging.

@Lumene

I love that story!!

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 18:42

Well their vicars clearly don’t agree. Church of England has limited wedding parties to 5.

Reginabambina · 19/03/2020 18:49

How can they believe that god let his son die an excruciating death for their benefit? It’s called religion, the whole point is that it doesn’t make sense.

avocadoze · 19/03/2020 18:57

Given that the Church of England has suspended all services indefinitely, I’m not sure the OP’s view of the situation is matched by reality.

LastTrainEast · 19/03/2020 19:00

I don't think most Christians will be assuming they are safe. Then again people do pray for things like that so that means they are hoping he will do them a special favour.

willowpatterns · 19/03/2020 19:03

The thing with some Christian sects is that they are not afraid of death. As one of them pretty much said to me this morning.

PorpentinaScamander · 19/03/2020 19:05

All our Church services are closed. All our church based activities are suspended.
We weren't sharing the peace or communion wine anyway.

'We' definitely don't think we won't get it.

FaithInfinity · 19/03/2020 19:09

My church are doing virtual meetings daily and live feeds on Sundays for the forseeable future so that we still feel connected but aren’t exposing each other to germs.

AdoreTheBeach · 19/03/2020 19:09

Well, I’m Christian and believe that anyone can potentially get the virus no matter what they believe or not.

TowandaForever · 19/03/2020 19:21

I’m not misinterpreting it. A man today said to me he is not going to get the virus as he prays everyday.

I was sent this video

It’s called god say, coronavirus is NOT!

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 19/03/2020 19:27

Your question should be 'How come my weird friends believe X, Y, and Z about Covid-19'

The overwhelming majority of Christians would categorise their belief in exceptionalism as poppycock.

Interested to learn how you came to know these people, OP.

DioneTheDiabolist · 19/03/2020 19:29

They don't. That's why masses are cancelled, funerals are happening at the graveside instead of in church and wedding guests are being limited.

Noworrieshere · 19/03/2020 19:31

There are stupid Christians just the same as there are stupid non-Christians

Willow2017 · 19/03/2020 19:34

Bet even he doesnt have loo roll though😉

Delete 'Christian' and replace with 'stupid'. Not all Chrstians are idiots. Ask them why churches are cutting back on meetings after church services, attendance at celebrations resticted etc if their leaders dont believe they can get it?

(Disclaimer i am not a Christian myself either)

Mlou32 · 19/03/2020 19:35

Well the Pope is currently socially distancing himself. If God was going to protect anyone, the Pope would probably be high on his list!

Your friend sounds nuts. He may be a Christian but that's of no importance to the fact that he is bonkers.

Percypopper · 19/03/2020 19:36

I’ve not come across that view from any of my Christian friends!

I think the fact that the home of the Catholic Church has been shut down for days/weeks (?) says that it’s not a Christian view 😂 your mate is just a bit nuts

Wanderlust21 · 19/03/2020 19:38

You're friend is bonkers.
I'm a Christian and I'm still hiding in my house.

I'd distance yourself from that person, they sound delusional.

Wanderlust21 · 19/03/2020 19:38

Exactly. There are probably all sorts of woo woo people out there relying on their crystals or their herbs.

I have a bunch of relatives who are fundamentalist Christians. A cousin who's a nurse posted something about hygiene, and one of her FB friends replied with something about the Lord being stronger than the virus. She got absolutely jumped on by my cousin and other religious relatives and friends, and very much put right.
