Speaking in tongues in church?

Hello all 👋

Am just wondering whether any of you have had any experience of speaking in tongues, or whether you've witnessed anyone else having that experience. What happened and how did you feel about it?

Personally, I'm not even sure what 'speaking in tongues' means. In Acts 2, the apostles are said to have been filled with the Holy Spirit 'and began to speak in other languages'. But surely nobody's suggesting that people who speak in tongues today are suddenly fluent in a language which they previously didn't know, but in which they can suddenly communicate to other native speakers of that language?

Or is that a total misunderstanding? Grateful for your thoughts!

(Am also interested in similar experiences in non-Christian contexts, too.)

Not sure what you mean? Can you explain it another way? The ad hom accusations. Here and on the other thread.

Do you mean I accused you of being unsettled on that thread? Could you copy and paste it? No, there was no talk of being unsettled on that thread by either of us. Not that I can remember anyway.

Tbh, headinhands, you are badgering a bit- you are asking questions which it feels impolite to ignore.

However, this is what the thread is about "experience of speaking in tongues, or whether you've witnessed anyone else having that experience. What happened and how did you feel about it?"

You are repeatedly asking about things which are not what the OP asked. Makes it hard to talk about something when somebody keeps interrupting with a different conversation.

Badger: repeatedly ask someone to do something.

Vitalogy · 15/09/2018 15:29

Which proves I'm unsettled how? I can't prove it. It was an observation I made. Only you truly know the answer to that.

headinhands · 15/09/2018 16:21

It was an observation I made.

Based on what. Something I said or was it thrown out as a general ad hom?

Badger: repeatedly ask someone to do something

But you can ignore. I'm not standing next to you. I'm not even sending you messages to a personal inbox.

Vitalogy · 15/09/2018 16:29

Based on what I already answered that.

But you can ignore. Certainly. Repeating the same question over and over would come under badgering though.

Interrupting a conversation to force people to talk about you.

So many threads in the religion and philosophy section closed down by dogged derailing. Shame.

Interrupting a conversation to force people to talk about you.

I'm not the one who wants to talk about me. I'm very boring. I just washed my car. I'm that boring.

Vitalogy, OP, MHD... Church was interesting this morning. A new Christian has been having unusual experiences and wanted to talk them through. She was worried about the source of the experiences, and what to do about them. When she realised that outside of public worship, the whole leadership team and at least a third of the congregation welcome and use spiritual gifts, she was most surprised!

I’ve experienced people talking in tongues and others interpretating at my last church. At a joint church conference I heard people singing in tongues alongside others, like me, singing the words in English. It sounded beautiful! My friend sings far more tunefully and loudly when she sings in tongues. It’s not a gift of the spirit I’ve been granted, despite having prayed for it. No matter, I have other gifts and no one has made me feel a lesser Christian because of it.
