Church chat and all related things... weak coffee, dodgy tunes, rubbish attitudes... and the uplifting, inspirational, and hilarious too.

Lovemedo I go to church with DD, DP doesn't come. There are quite a few families at my church where one partner is a regular and the other will turn up for Christmas and socials, but not much else, so I don't feel too left out Grin

I find the services replenishing and invigorating; DP finds that she gets the same effect from a few hours peace and quiet on a Sunday morning. So I look at it as a bit of a positive all round, although of course if she ever wants to come I'll encourage her to.

Niminy · 15/07/2018 22:16

DH said to me today, "Do you think Graham Kendrick had been listening to Neil Diamond when he wrote Shine Jesus Shine?" So I now have an earworm of the chorus of Shine Jesus Shine to the tune of the chorus of Sweet Caroline. Argh!

In other music news we sang two of my favourite rousing hymns today: O for a thousand tongues to sing and Sing of the Lord's Goodness. Happy times!

Madhairday · 15/07/2018 22:30

Aaagh noooooo! Sweet Caroline morphing into SJS! I have it too now, thanks niminy Grin

Love O For a thousand tongues. Don't know the other one you mention? We sang some of my faves today too. Hymns And can it be and Guide me oh thou great redeemer, and we sung Oceans and Cory Astburys Reckless Love which is fabulous. I loved it - I'd not got to church in a while so it was very special :)

Excited about meeting some of you on Saturday!

EddSimcox · 16/07/2018 00:15

Hey folks, looks like I've been gone a month. Not sure why tbh! I mean busy yadda yadda of course, but that's never been different, sorry! Seem to be doing church stuff loads atm but it's all good. We're going to leaflet the whole parish, so you can imagine the fun and games drafting the text for the leaflet by committee! I'm now on the Strategy and comms sub-group, PCC, finance committee, deanery synod... bonkers [eyeroll]

My VA has told me I need to persuade the vicar to put me on the preaching rota so that's another thing coming up.

I might be getting back together with DP, so prayers in that direction very welcome... And I'm really looking forward to seeing mhd niminy and oma this week. Who else is coming??

Niminy · 16/07/2018 08:07

Ooh love all those MHD. This is - though we didn't have a jazz band Sad

Deanery Synod Edd! that is hardcore. Will pray for you and DP and your family.

So, so looking forward to seeing people on Saturday!

Madhairday · 16/07/2018 08:19

Oh like it! But it definitely needs that jazz band! :)

I think greenheart and nickel are both coming too on Saturday?

Madhairday · 16/07/2018 08:21

Edd - all those groups! Wow! Just make sure you're taking time to take care of yourself and not burn out from it all... Flowers

Certainly prayers for you re dp. How are you feeling about it all?

LaunchACareer · 16/07/2018 08:28

I am praying for the women on FWR, some can be quite brutal on there. They are fighting a noble fight for all of us, and some are going about it in a very unloving hypocritical way. They want their right to philosophical beliefs to be respected in the trans debate yet the right to a Christian to have the same isn't unless they are escaping Quiver Duggar religion which aligns with the idea of what all Christians are like.Hmm

I am taking a step back in helping, there were a number of aggressive posters who have weird ideas about Christianity - they think we are all right-wing hard core- and clearly want to lose rather than have any support. They seem to think Christian people are evil and preoccupied by things they aren't.Confused one posted a load of nonsense in a post about cults Hmm.

It put me off, if they got Christianity so wrong it made me wonder about their other breaking down ability.

Dutchoma · 16/07/2018 09:05

Sorry Launchacareer, I don’t quite know what you are talking about. What is FWR?

FloralBunting · 16/07/2018 09:07

Launch, could you point me to which threads you mean? I mean, clearly everyone has been very nice about me leaving the QF movement, which, given that posting about it was a direct response to someone else mentioning it, I'm quite happy about.

I've been quite openly Catholic and pro-life on the FWR threads I've posted on, and no one has had a pop at me over it. Some people on the thread about the doctor who was turned down for the DWP job were quite clear they have no time for what they term more right wing Christian beliefs, but horses for courses. Plenty of people have lines they will not cross to form alliances.

Or is there a thread I am missing which is full of anti-Christian vitriol? (Which is of course possible, I don't live on here!)

LaunchACareer · 16/07/2018 09:26

Maybe it's my seeing things differently, I felt the Christian Dr thread comments were the last straw for me along with the breakdown of a cult using a Christian as an example. It's the continual drip drip attacks from posters on there, I can't be doing with it right now.

Yes, everyone was quite rightly posting nicely to you. You write nicely and you were confirming their view of Christianity.

FloralBunting · 16/07/2018 09:35

Fair enough, Launch. I totally get the need to withdraw when things get a bit much. And fwiw, I totally understand your reaction to the prevailing view about Christianity there - I cope with some of the negativity by reminding myself that the focus of the board is the rights of women and girls, rather than apologetics.

I was asking genuinely in case there was a thread in which Christianity was being soundly bashed in general, in which case I was preparing to jump in and redress the balance.

DragonNoodleCake · 16/07/2018 12:55

@Madhairday I love love love Reckless love! We've introduced this at a couple of services. Oceans is amazing but a tough one for a band.

Madhairday · 16/07/2018 14:44

It's fab, isn't it, DragonNoodleCake! Such beautiful words. I adore Oceans too - one of my all time favourites. It is harder for a band but once a congregation know it it's great - ours belt it out for all its worth now and love it!

Floral and Launch, I sometimes lurk a bit there, and do know what you mean about prevailing attitude to Christianity, I think I see it everywhere though now. It can be really tough, you can feel very battle-scarred sometimes with it all. As Christians its good to do all we can to show compassion in all these things, and stand up for the rights and needs of women and children too, but it's an incredibly divisive issue, and it saddens me to see some of the vitriol against those who post there. Be careful of yourselves!

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 16/07/2018 17:38

I am planning to come on Saturday. I'm away on retreat all week and I need to get a sermon idea in my head if not actually written when I get back.

Looking forward to meeting up with you.

DragonNoodleCake · 16/07/2018 21:37

If I didn't have tickets for Del Amitri at the castle I'd be so tempted to get a flight down to see you all!

Dutchoma · 16/07/2018 21:56

That would have been so lovely. Enjoy the concert(?)

FloralBunting · 16/07/2018 23:07

Ooo, Del Amitri!! Much jealous!

Orchidflower1 · 17/07/2018 21:30

Praying for you and your family edd.

Praying for all families starting the summer holidays that parents and children have calmness and family time.

I too have the sjs / sc ear worm now. It’s morphed into sweet Jesus shine!

applesandpears33 · 19/07/2018 15:53

Have a great time meeting up on Saturday. Week three of the school holidays here and I'm struggling to stop my kids from being on screens all day. They claim to have no other interests, other than ones which cost a fortune. It is so frustrating.

Madhairday · 19/07/2018 18:03

Thanks, apples and pears. Looking forward to it.

Completely empathise re kids and screens. Drives me up the wall.

Madhairday · 21/07/2018 18:52

Was fabulous meeting up with some of you today :)

Hope all journeys home were good. Mine was okay though long.

Felt like a privilege meeting you all. #partnersinthegospel SmileFlowersWine

DragonNoodleCake · 21/07/2018 20:18

Next time I'm coming to the meet up!!

Right now I'm sitting in the Castle Esplanade (Edinburgh) awaiting the concert start 😀

Niminy · 22/07/2018 15:09

Dragon do do do come to the next one! It was so lovely. And it just felt like we were old friends who'd known each other for years which I guess we all have!

Glad to hear you got home ok Madhairday, so tiring doing two long journeys in one day and in the heat. DS2 and I ended up on a much longer walk than planned and then on the slowest train ever home. He said as we left 'so is Mumsnet just a Christian thing then?' Grin

EddSimcox · 22/07/2018 22:29

It’s me who’s privileged meeting you lot - all so important for me, especially in 2015 ... seems strange - simultaneously just the other day, and another era. ❤️

mhd special thanks to you for traveling to London in the heat; really hope the exhaustion hasn’t affected your health.
