So how would you feel if a friend, you have bent over backwards to help, turns round and says you're going to hell

because she's a baptist .. and you're not religious

am kind of stunned at this one

it was intimated that I was damned for all eternity and yet all I have done is bend over backwards to be helpful and kind and probably follow closely the tenets of her religion without actually being a member of it

I havent read all this thread yet, but in responce to your OP I wouldnt be offended as such as I dont believe in hell etc..

ILs do believe, and have told us similarly that we will go to hell and suffer eternal damnation. It was said in matter of fact way and not with any hatred towards us for not believing.

Unless your friend carps on about it just accept it as one of the difference between you and her.

If heaven is filled with people like that, do you really want to go there anyway?? At least in the pits of hell it will be warm and you can do debauched things and have naughty fun

Twiglett · 20/11/2006 12:52

methinks ginmummy needs to read Dante's inferno

I'd like to think that God (who doesn't exist, by the way) will call over all the fire-and-brimstone types for a quiet word on their first day in Heaven and say 'Look guys, no hard feelings or anything, but you kind of missed my point....'

ginmummy · 20/11/2006 13:06

I watched the last Messiah - does that count? I keep thinking that the wasps I'm finding around the house in places that I know are regularly hoovered are a sign that I'm damned to the 7th circle as I'm a heretic wanderer who has attempted suicide. If that's the case then I think we should all have as much fun on this earth as we can as we're all damned to burn for eternity for something or other.

MaryBS · 20/11/2006 16:51

If its any comfort I've been damned to hell too...

I'm now training to be a lay minister in the church. Makes me want to go back and say "see, what do YOU know!"

Personally I'd never tell anyone that. How would they know anyway? I hate it when people put words into God's mouth!

Try not to let it bother you, but make it quite clear that what she is saying is unacceptable and judgmental.

hunkermunker · 20/11/2006 17:45

Hey, Bloss, should I have been offended?

I want to go to "heck" - it's the polite version of hell.

Wouldn't bother me, would find it vaguely amusing really.

MaryBS · 20/11/2006 22:45

Bloss, I've spent half my evening laughing, not sure why - PLEASE don't make me laugh any more , just happy I guess!

(My bladder control isn't that good anymore )

Twiglett · 21/11/2006 14:11

Hey Bloss .. when did you get the hang of writing posts that are short then? I always expect reams per post from you

Tell her - no, dear. I was in Hell when I was helping you out. I'm in heaven now I'm not having to deal with you.

I've had loads of this sort of stuff from people because I tell them I'm not religious

Not getting DS christened "When he dies his soul will go to limbo if you don't".
ME: - Oh good, he likes dancing"

"You'll go to Hell if you don't believe in Jesus" - Oh well, at least I'll be warm.

Anyway....isn't there a religion that puts us all down as joining their religion when we die so we go to heaven anyway? Thought I read somewhere that they read the obits and register the person as a member of their religion just to make sure their soul goes to heaven

KathyMCMLXXII · 21/11/2006 14:30

Might be Mormons that do that, Iklboo? I know they are into genealogy (provide some useful free resources for people doing family history ) so they can baptise their ancestors.

nearlythree · 21/11/2006 19:21

Yep, my Mormon aunt and uncle have traced their family tree and had the details entered on a big computer in Utah which then prints out the details for someone to be baptised on their behalf. I think they only go to a kind of half-way-house heaven, not the all-singing-all-dancing one which true believers go to. I told my cousin that if her parents stuck me and my dcs on their list I would be seriously displeased but she said they'd left us off, so we are off to the burny place. Ah well.
