My very old siamese cat has possibly got hypothermia

Poor pussy

He has had warm fluids (not IV but an injection) & I had to go & buy him an electric blanket to keep him warm or I wouldn't be allowed to take him home

He hasn't eaten & is walking very oddly - but he has had a drink

What else should I do?

They wouldn't need to sedate him.

Is he still alive? If so, call the vet - please.

differentID · 04/01/2010 21:53

Katymac, if the worst happens, he'll know he was loved.

ClaireDeLoon · 04/01/2010 21:54

oh no Katymac how awful your poor boy

Katymac · 04/01/2010 21:54

Bella he is very old - the vet & I discussed being conservative with his care

I don't want him to die - but I don't want to prolong anything - this might seem harsh but it's the way we feel

OP posts:
Bella32 · 04/01/2010 21:57

I wouldn't consider putting an IV line in to bring his temp back up to be prolonging anything at all.

Think I'll go now

peggotty · 04/01/2010 21:58

I think you are right Katymac. If he had a choice, i am sure he would rather go curled up on your knee, in the home he knows and loves than in a vets. If he appears to be peaceful and in no obvious pain, it is best for him to stay with you and everything he is familiar with...who wouldn't want to go like that?

Katymac · 04/01/2010 22:00

The vet did discuss it earlier - but she wasn't sure it was right ixedI will ring but it's not really an emergency, she didn't think she could fix him

I wish he could be

Katymac I'd rather mine went at home being cuddled. Hope you come to terms with it okay over the next few weeks.

I wouldn't do anything invasive with a more mature cat either.

Katymac · 04/01/2010 22:01

I think he had a little fit

ClaireDeLoon · 04/01/2010 22:02

Such a difficult time, we'd all do different things from each other. If he's being cuddled it's not such a bad way to go.

I have an 18 yo cat here he's skin and bones, kidney disease, just being treated for stomach problems and I hate the thought of losing him but if the stomach problems turn out to be cancer he won't be having an op I don't want him to die on an operating table I want to hold him myself.

Joolsiam · 04/01/2010 22:08

Thinking of you both.

Katymac · 04/01/2010 22:25

DD woke up & came down

We have had a little chat - we are both weeping

I think we will sleep on the settee tonight with him

Sad
mad4mainecoons · 04/01/2010 22:52

FWIW i think you are doing the right thing Katymac. it sounds so desperately sad, but he seems like a very poorly old chap and if he is going to go tonight it would be much better to be at home with you where he feels safe and secure than at the vets being alone and frightened.

just steel yourself that the very end may not be nice to watch.

will be thinking of you tonight and praying that he drifts away peacefully if thats whats ment to be.xxxx

Katymac · 05/01/2010 07:55

He made it through the night

He seems a bit brighter but I have warned DD not to be too hopeful

Back at the vets soon

Claire2301 · 05/01/2010 08:37

So glad to hear he got through the night, Good luck for the vets.

Joolsiam · 05/01/2010 09:13

Delighted to wake up to this news - had been thinking about you overnight.

Hope all goes well at the vets

gothgirl77 · 05/01/2010 09:22

Wee soul - fingers crossed for you both

skymoo · 05/01/2010 09:41

I'm willing him to make it - I'm in bits here

PreRaphaeliteGirl · 05/01/2010 09:55

So sorry to hear about this.

The same thing happened to the cat I grew up with with I was a teenager.

I know how it feels.

We are with you here, bless you.

aristocat · 05/01/2010 10:08

Katymac
thinking of you both

i feel the same that it would be lovely to hold them when the time comes, however difficult it is

animals enrich our lives so much but there is heartbreak too.

Katymac · 05/01/2010 10:29

Right - back from the Vets

They only let him home with me last night because they thought he would die.

He had a major crisis late last night when his heart & breathing really slowed down

But then he got up & drank several times in the night & his walking is better

He is on ab's & IV fluids - which the vet didn't want to do yesterday as she felt he wouldn't make it

I am so relieved that she took my wishes into account & didn't treat him agressively

Now he is so much better I am happy he is being treated 'more' - iyswim

He may still die, but I know I have done the right thing

They have promised if they think he is going they will phone & I can come & collect him

Thank you all - I will let you know how it goes
