My very old siamese cat has possibly got hypothermia

Poor pussy

He has had warm fluids (not IV but an injection) & I had to go & buy him an electric blanket to keep him warm or I wouldn't be allowed to take him home

He hasn't eaten & is walking very oddly - but he has had a drink

What else should I do?

Is it Hills a/d? That's a very palatable, very rich food which is good if they'll eat it but some just don't like it.

Maybe mix in a few sardines or something?

Warming it up for a few seconds in the microwave (if you're not doing that already) helps bring out the smell and will also warm his tum of course

Katymac · 06/01/2010 18:28

It's Royal Canine 'Recovery' (but for cats) he likes it but is too lazy to eat unless pushed

Yes, same food basically.

He's not being lazy! I've nursed dogs recovering from hypothermia and their appetite took a long time to come back.

Keep on coaxing

Katymac · 06/01/2010 19:18

He is quite warm now - but still not eating properly

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 19:21

I know - but getting his temp back up is only the first step. The hypothermia has taken a huge toll on his body and it will take him time to recover

differentID · 06/01/2010 19:26

Glad he's doing ok.

Katymac · 06/01/2010 20:17

Thanks - he is eating his own food now.......

Good

ClaireDeLoon · 06/01/2010 20:25

Glad he seems to be getting stronger

Honeypeckle · 06/01/2010 20:46

for you

Katymac · 07/01/2010 16:42

Another good day - lots of wee, a bit of poo & some food - he still needs to be tempted for the wet food but is eating his dry food fairly enthusiastically

OP posts:
Bella32 · 07/01/2010 19:10

Super douper

As long as he's on a good quality dry food he'll do fine. The recovery food is good if they'll eat it, but not essential.

Fab news.

SleighGirl · 07/01/2010 20:42

Great news see what high calorie dry food u can get for him

Lucycat · 09/01/2010 15:50

Jeez cats they do like to put us through the emotional wringer don't they.

Lucy is also 14 but a sprightly bonkers 14, I'm dreading it when she leaves us.

Katymac · 10/01/2010 11:41

He isn't eating much dry food & he will only eat the recovery food off my finger

So I opened a tin of tuna - you have never seen food disappear so fast

Do you think I should buy tuna in oil to help build him up?

OP posts:
SleighGirl · 10/01/2010 11:45

No idea I would ask vet if it's okay first, it may be too rich for him?

How about the really posh cat food with proper prawns/meat in them??

Katymac · 10/01/2010 11:48

He has never really had tinned/tray cat food as when he was little it upset his tum

I am at the vet tomorrow so I will ask but I am continuing with the tuna in the meantime

OP posts:
Katymac · 10/01/2010 12:01

Just eaten half a tin of tuna in water - & is looking very smug

OP posts:
SleighGirl · 10/01/2010 12:49

I bet he is

There could be a chance he's laying it on a bit thick IMO

Katymac · 10/01/2010 12:57

I think you could be right

But we haven't had a poo since Friday so I am encouraging food

Tuna it is

OP posts:
Joolsiam · 10/01/2010 13:04

Great that he is eating

Just be a bit careful with tuna - it shouldn't really be fed more than 2 - 3 times per week as there is something in it (mercury I think because tuna are bottom feeders) that is dangerous to cats if they eat too much. Also, try to give him the tuna in spring water.

You could also try pilchards in tomato sauce, or a handful of chopped up prawns (buy a bag of budget ones from the freezer section and let them defrost naturally.

If he likes dry food, why not try kitten biscuits ? These are smaller, so easy to eat but also higher in calorie than adult cat food.

Katymac · 10/01/2010 13:07

ATM he is getting what I have in the house (snow you know )

Once we get the the shops I think some tray food, and some cheap fish bits might be the way to go

Kitten food is a good idea tho' Thanks

Just to update everyone

My poor pussy collapsed this morning

We took him to the vet who explained that he had circulatory collapse & that the prognosis wasn't terribly good.

My DH & I decided to have him put down - we are obviously devastated (& we still need to tell DD)
