If your dogs are crate trained (sounds like they are) get a very large and conspicuous padlock so you can lock them in the crate if you pop away from the campsite to go shopping for an hour. If you tell people in the tents nearby that's what you are doing then they won't think you have abandoned them and will more than likely offer to keep an eye on them for you.

I've been camping with my two dogs loads and it's fine, when you're camping you can't buy a load of groceries anyway as you have nowhere to keep them fresh, so you tend to buy a few bits every day from local shops, where you can keep an eye on them tied up outside. Bear in mind though the south west might not be the ideal place as most of Devon and Cornwall you can't take dogs on the beach in the summer which is a nightmare as you can't go to the beach for the day then. One exception is Watergate Bay just north of Newquay which allows dogs all year. Wales might be better if you can get there as all their beaches are dog friendly I think.

One good tip if your dogs have been pinched before, buy them very conspicuous muzzles and put them on if you tie them up outside a shop - not many theives are going to pinch dogs that look as if they might bite!

Good luck with the camping

Great advice from Piffy and I'm sorry you've had some hostile reactions here. Hope you have a brill holiday. I camped with my dog the other day and had a good time. He adored it.

The car thing: if the weather is crap and the shpping trip is only 10 minutes and a window is open, it will be ok to leave the dogs. Once the weather gets sunny it becomes too risky.

dilbertina · 02/06/2008 22:27

For a couple of days could you not get longlife milk? You can even get organic long-life milk now! I think if you plan carefully you can avoid spending much time in shops anyway, which I'm sure is the last thing you want to be doing on holiday anyway!

I would not leave my dog in car alone for more than a couple of minutes windows down or not. The risk is too great.

kee27 · 02/06/2008 22:29

i am sure my dogs will be fine for bout 15 mins in the car with the windows down and i am going to see if there is anything i can get to go over the cage like a heat reflectife thing or summit and a fan all i want is to go on holiday it ain't my fault we got to eat if ppl were more responsible dog owners and picked up it's shit and looked after it proper when out i expect it wld be far easier to take dogs away
