Recommendations please as we are looking at getting a family dog.

looking at the following:
small
not yappy
doesn't malt
good with kids - we have a 3 year old who is dog obsessed and a teenager.

Please notes, i grew up with Bernese mountains dogs and leonbergers so im used to the bigger breeds but this time im after a small dog.

Thanks

Something unusual: Chinese Crested Powderpuff. We had one, lovely little dog and was very gentle. Only downside ours was a bit dim.

unclejonnymademydress · 03/04/2024 15:43

I had a jack Russell who died last year at 17. She meets your criteria except a bit yappy on walks but that wasn't bad. She was amazing with kids too.

Others breeds I recommend you should consider are
Border terrier and King Charles spaniel

idontlikealdi · 03/04/2024 15:46

Cairn terrier

My springer spaniel is more medium but he fits all your other criteria!

I have a Yorkshire terrier, she's a sweet little thing, doesn't malt, well socialised early on so isn't yappy at all and is amazing with my kids.

Bichon Frise, Poodle, or a bit more unusual, Coton de Tulear.

Best to avoid the poodle crosses, especially when they're crossed with a moulting breed as they could easily just inherit that coat, plus all the other health problems.

ButtockUp · 05/04/2024 17:25

Id personally avoid all these cockyshitpoo breeds as they're generally from backyard breeders and it's difficult to know which characteristics they've inherited.

Cockers are usually wonderful family pets but I'd avoid the current trend for working cockers. They need much more stimulation and input .

Our current dog is a golden retriever. Gentle, biddable dogs but the hair... oh the hair.

Someone upthread mentioned a Cairn Terrier. Wonderful dogs

amyds2104 · 06/04/2024 10:03

Cocker spaniels are awesome family dogs

Queijo · 06/04/2024 10:05

I wouldn’t be getting any puppy with a 3 year old! Puppies are insanely hard work, you need eyes on them constantly and you just can’t do that when you have a young child as well, it’s not fair on either of them.

I’ve always had dogs all my life, when my old girl died when Dd was 2 I knew there was no chance I’d be getting a puppy when she was still small. She’s 7 now and I’m only just starting to think about it again.

Kazzybingbong · 06/04/2024 10:07

We have whippets and they are amazing family dogs. Great with kids, very gentle, complete cuddly couch potatoes but will run like crazy on walks, no grooming, great with other dogs too.

They are a very special breed with lots of unique quirks!

Sounds like the puppy you want is actually a kitten :)

Nannyfannybanny · 06/04/2024 10:14

Queijo, I agree with you, and I have always had dogs, and had 4 kids. I have a puppy now Border collie, Also do you work,?she's,9 months, now having her first season, one more and she will be spayed. That's put the mockers on our weekend plans. My neighbours have a second Border Terrier puppy, he slept through the night quickly,is a lovely little thing, but boy, does he yap! We had a Phalene, cousin of the Papillon, PTS January 23,also 18,, only you we've ever had,he was a great little dog. Does need grooming, they have hair, not fur,no undercoat or oil.

Nannyfannybanny · 06/04/2024 10:15

Only TOY breed we've ever had phone altered that,

TeenLifeMum · 06/04/2024 10:15

I don’t think you can be assured re moulting. My cocker spaniel hardly moults with a silky, easy clean coat. His brother has a totally different, fluffy coat and moults terribly. KC reg so not mixed breed.

themadhat · 06/04/2024 10:18

We have a Bichon Frise she’s 7 now and such a lovely little dog. I’ve had two babies since we had her and she’s amazing with them. She doesn’t malt although grooming bills can be expensive. I recently looked after a family members spaniel and my god the hairs!!

Northernladdette · 06/04/2024 10:18

A blue whippet 🙂

Ineedwinenow · 06/04/2024 10:21

Lhasa Apso or Shitzus are fabulous dogs with big personalities, they don’t shed so need to be groomed and although they need walking they don’t need much but my old girl walked for miles and loved it so you can definitely do as much or as little as you need! my last Lhasa sadly died a few months ago and we are getting a pup next week!

Lookingadvice · 06/04/2024 10:23

I have two Lhasa apsos, they’re great with my two year old who is so rough with them. They don’t cast but you can find an odd few hairs come off them if their coats need a good groom but that’s unusual. They’re not too yappy they used to bark a bit when someone came to the door but with training we got that settled as well. My two are great family dogs they’re content being in the house and relaxing but also fit enough to come for days out and can keep up to a good distance and very affectionate just want cuddles all day

Underestimated4 · 06/04/2024 10:27

My Mums got a 9 month old cockapoo pup, he fits all of that he’s just the best :)

Tickyandtackyandjackiethebackie · 06/04/2024 10:28

We have 2 French Bulldogs. They are amazing with kids. They don't really malt but do bark sometimes (not yappy).
One has been very low maintenance but the other does have some issues with her face folds, which require daily cleaning, so that is something to be aware of.

seasaltbarbie · 06/04/2024 10:28

I know you said small but I did a bit of research as am wanting to get a dog once my kids are a bit bigger, and a golden retriever seems to be a great family dog. Smaller than your used to at least.
