not yappy

good with kids - we have a 3 year old who is dog obsessed and a teenager.

Please notes, i grew up with Bernese mountains dogs and leonbergers so im used to the bigger breeds but this time im after a small dog.

It's not a big deal. OP wrote malt too. It's just worth knowing how to spell moult. There is no need to witter on about it on Pedants' Corner.

No need to witter on about spelling either....

@Harry12345 Poodles and Bichon Frises don’t moult

I know I was replying to a poster who recommended a Jack Daniel’s and spaniel

Ahh, sorry. I misunderstood

Phoenixfire1988 · 06/04/2024 20:33

I have 2 frenchies and breed them ( I do all relevant health testing fbce rfg etc ) and they are great good with kids , small , my blue girl doesn't moult much my fawn girl is horrendous, they are a bit more robust than other smaller breeds and are just overall clowns .
I'd be wary having a small dog like a chihuahua, tories etc with a 3 year old as they can be very easily hurt

We have 3 Miniature Dachshunds and a 3 year old child. 2 are short haired and 1 is long haired. They're fab together. All have completely different personalities. They don't take much walking however 2 have done Helvellyn and Scafell Pike. They aren't yappy, very healthy, and put up with a lot from the 3yo. The two short haired ones do moult a bit but they don't lose much and doesn't last long. I barely notice it. Highly recommend them 🥰

Everyone I know that's had Daxies all say the same thing ..... they're noisy and love to howl and yap my neighbour had 2 and honestly they never shut up

Mrschickenn · 06/04/2024 21:45

A Westie. Please look at rescue as well as breeders. There are some who have puppies and will re home with children

Liddle · 06/04/2024 21:49

They must be unlucky. I have first hand experience of having 3 and mine aren't yappy. If someone comes to the door then they bark. We live on a public footpath so people pass constantly and sometimes they sit on the sofa and watch out the window. Sometimes they bark but if we tell them to go to bed they will. So if they bark at something it doesn't last. I assume most dogs bark tho

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/04/2024 22:04

A Chihuahua.
Mine rarely yaps and doesn't fit the stereotype about being nasty.
She loves nothing more than to snuggle under blankets and love and be loved.

BorderTerrierMummy · 06/04/2024 22:17

Border terrier shout out here. Ours is amazing, super friendly and cuddly but also cheeky and entertaining. She's always making mischief but is well behaved. House trained really easily.
She's not reactivate or yappy at all, but any dog can be those things - they just need careful training. If she's barking it's for a good reason, like someone walking up the driveway (and then she'll settle back down super quickly).'

Best decision we ever made was getting her.

We have a Lhasa Apso crossed with a poodle and he’s a lovely family dog. No moulting, but he does need regular grooming appointments every 8 weeks or so. He weighs 12kg now, and is at his adult weight. Difficult parts of a Lhasa Apso are that you do have to work at training as they think they are people too! They are very loving and enjoy a walk but don’t need lots of exercise.

Wouldn’t such a tiny dog be vulnerable to injury with a very young child though?

KittyTurquoise · 06/04/2024 22:53

Bear in mind that any of your “poo breeds” (not breeds, just expensive mutts) may be advertised as not shedding but it is subject to which parent dogs dna is more prominent and 50/50 will shed.

There are so many beautiful dogs looking for homes in rescue centres, please dont rule them out. Take a look around ❤️

Op will definitely need several Jack Daniel's if she's planning to get a spaniel puppy with a three year oldGrin
(I love autocorrects when they change a meaning, my autocorrects just make me look like a turnip!).

Nannyfannybanny · 07/04/2024 09:20

Gemma19846, when our dog was PTS January 23, I ringed a 100 mile radius of where we live, for rescues. I've had dogs since I was a kid, mostly collies, the one you,and a lab/setter cross,he was a rescue, very aggressive, worked hard on him for 2 years. Had 2 other rescues, only one of the 3 was successful (well,a re-home really) I have 200 ft of well fenced garden on the edge of a village, farms 2 roads away near the beach. Retired, always someone at home. I will admit I don't like staffs, not a flat face dog,or elderly,or 11. In the end I tried England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was staffs, elderly dogs,no other dogs,no visiting children (youngest DGD is one) reactive to: people, other dogs, cars, bikes.i applied twice to a specific border collie rescue, they didn't even respond
So we got a puppy, farm stock as most of our collies have been.

Nannyfannybanny · 07/04/2024 09:22

I didn't type a You dog, I typed TOY!!

MiniAusOttie · 07/04/2024 09:49

My pup is a Miniature American Shepherd, he’s a medium sized dog but breed standard is small-medium

Again, there is no reputable and responsible rescue centre in the land that would give you a dog with a toddler in the home.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 07/04/2024 13:02

Miniature schnauzer fits that bill.

DiscoFoxTrot · 07/04/2024 13:14

Border Terriers are fabulous dogs, I’ve had rotties, parsons terrier and border collies and now on my 3rd BT. They’re big dogs in a smaller package, will lie in bed all all day or go on walks for miles, don’t cast and in my experience aren’t yappy. Great with kids and easily trained, mine are rarely on leads. Once you have a wee broon dug, you’ll never go back!

DrJoanAllenby · 07/04/2024 13:20

Schnauzer - a small one.

SurreyisSunny · 07/04/2024 18:20

I’m a year into owning a miniature poodle. Not a single hair dropped and very friendly. They don’t yap but can bark. Very excitable and a lot of energy! My dog weighs 9kg so I can pick him up still.

Personally I’d avoid a cross breed as more difficult to know the lineage. Also more difficult to know what size dog you’ll get. I saw a teeny cockapoo in the park today yet some are twice the size.

Cockers might also be a good option.

Unfortunately unless a puppy most rescues can’t be placed with young children.

Sadly there’s often puppies available from breeders who can’t sell the last couple from their litters.

Essexthroughandthrough · 07/04/2024 20:48

Border terrier seems like it fits all of your list! I have one she is 3 now and absolutely loves a walk but equally a couch potato. She only barks when chasing our other dog a GSD and is a tough little thing! Great with other dogs and my nephew who is 2.
I would avoid anything small crossed with a poodle as they’re known for separation anxiety (not all but the majority!) and just make sure you have the time to do the training (with a young one too) the more you do when they are younger the better family dog you will have ☺️
