He shaved the cat!

So I have a gorgeous little Tortie cat who, bless her, somehow caught fleas. So I headed out to get some 'spot on' treatment and some flea shampoo so I could give her a wash and some fog sprays for the house so that my partner felt less stressed because he hates bugs. Anyway, when I came home there was cat fur everywhere. He's given her a full skin head cut. Now I understand and she looks cute bless her. To be fair the fleas have gone, she's an indoor cat so I'll keep her warm till it grows back but ever since I've noticed I feel like I have hay fever. Super itchy throat, eyes, ears, skin! Please tell me this is just crazy timing and it's not me somehow suddenly being allergic to my cat?

Your problems are:

  1. Your partner is stupid enough to think you can cure fleas by shaving a cat.
  2. Your partner is so incredibly stupid and arrogant that he is incapable of using google to find out the correct solution for a common problem.
  3. Your partner is the sort of person who shaves someone else’s pet without permission while the pet owner is out buying medication for the pet. That is controlling, creepy, abusive behaviour. And, it was incredibly disrespectful to you.
  4. You are having a bad reaction to cat dander because the cat fur that protected the cat’s skin has been removed.

Your problem is your shitty ‘partner.’ A man who treats an animal like this, and who treats you with such disrespectful contempt, is not someone you can build a happy life with. Please leave or at least never have children with this man.

In the meantime take antihistamines for your allergic reaction and recognise that it is entirely your partner’s fault.

I really hope this is a sick joke. I can’t imagine a cat who would tolerate this.

Your DP is an abusive arsehole. Poor cat Sad

That’s not cute that’s awful. Also dangerous their skin tears easily and needs stitching because it literally opens up like a zip.

He has a neck tattoo and drinks carling black label doesn’t he?

^ This. The vet says their skin is incredibly easy to cut and tear. Most vets only shave a whole cat ( as opposed to a small section) under sedation. Apparently it takes them a very long time to shave them as when the shaver heats up, it burns their skins so they keep having to stop every minute or so until they cool down.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/07/2023 08:44

todaypicard,is correct, over the counter flea treatment doesn't work. I've had cats all my life... since a baby, also never heard of an indoor cat catching fleas. They are extremely difficult to eradicate. We moved into an empty property, elderly owner had died,we laid brand new carpet, flea eggs can live dormant for years. Agree with other posters.

Indoor cats can catch fleas quite easily. It’s not unusual for eggs to be dormant in furnishings or carried in on shoes and clothes. We flea and worm our indoor cat.

OP, you still need to give your cat flea treatment. And explain to your idiot DP that shaving does nothing to cure fleas and is stressful and detrimental to the cat.

As said above, you are having a dander reaction. Take antihistamines.

Bananalanacake · 12/07/2023 08:46

If you don't have DC together there is no point living with this man.

SindyisbetterthanBarbie · 12/07/2023 08:46

Where exactly do you think the fleas have gone?
All over the house when they abandoned ship after the shaving torture, that's where.
Idiotic idea, idiotic DP. Poor cat.

caringcarer · 12/07/2023 08:51

I'd kick my dh out if he ever abused my cats. I'd report him to the RSPCA too. If the cat has monthly flea tablets they won't get fleas. Anyone who thinks this is cute is a very sick human being. The cat would have been terrified and now will have the stress of living with her abuser. It is very serious OP. Don't let him just shrug it off.

DancingBarefootTonight · 12/07/2023 08:51

He shaves the cat and you understand and thinks she looks cute? If I called you both what I wanted to, I’d be deleted.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 12/07/2023 08:54

OP not been back to thread. I think this is a nasty “joke” to wind up cat lovers.
Some people just have very empty lives I guess

Tdcp · 12/07/2023 08:54

What a cruel thing to do. Apart from the obvious health problems for the cat she must have been absolutely terrified! You're now going to have traumatised cat and furniture full of fleas all because your partner "doesn't like bugs". What a fucking idiot. Congratulations.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 12/07/2023 08:56

Disgustingly cruel. I would rehome your cat to people who won't abuse it. Can't believe you think it's amusing.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 12/07/2023 08:58

This isn't cute or funny - it's cruel.

You also won't have got rid of the fleas 🙄

CatChant · 12/07/2023 09:01

I really hope this is not true because it is a horrible story of animal abuse and your partner is a vile, cruel, stupid waste of space.

Newyearnewmeow · 12/07/2023 09:01

If this is actually real then your partner is an abusive twat and you shouldn’t have a cat if you are not horrified and disgusted with what he’s done to that poor animal.

paradoxicalfrog · 12/07/2023 09:08

The fleas may no longer be on your cat but they and their eggs will still be in your carpets and furnishings and will bite your ankles, jump into coffee cups etc if not dealt with.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 12/07/2023 09:11

Highly irresponsible. All she needed was spot on treatment so the fleas would jump onto her and die.
Now you'll struggle to get rid of them in your home, they'll be in carpets, furnishings, skirting boards etc.

Topseyt123 · 12/07/2023 09:12

The fleas are still there. They are in the fur now all over your house and getting into the carpet, soft furnishings etc. They are now even more widespread than before because of your spectacularly cruel and stupid partner, who I very much doubt has any expertise on shaving cats!!

This is cruelty to the cat. Those who thought it funny back at the start of the thread should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. The cat's delicate skin will have been left raw and with little or no protection.

Your partner really must be very dim. He is also a threat to your cat because of his stupidity. I would rethink the relationship. Yes, the fur will regrow, but that isn't the point. The point is that he has hurt and scared the cat. The fleas won't have gone away. They are just now more widespread in your home environment.

Everyone directing you to get vet prescription products is generally right. Discount and over the counter ones are very poor and don't work.

You can often set up a subscription with Pets at Home and get some fairly decent Frontline ones sent to you monthly. I used to when I had dogs, and they do it for cats too.

Iheartmysmart · 12/07/2023 09:12

Take some bloody antihistamines and then rehome your poor cat. Your partner abusing the poor thing isn’t funny.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/07/2023 09:33

@Idrankyourbananamilk Interesting, I've had a couple of indoor cats and never had fleas or, to be honest, ever heard of anyone's indoor cat getting fleas but I stand corrected.

I still call bullshit though

@caringcarer

what do you think the RSPCA are going to do about a bloke who shaved a cat?

seriously

Iamacatslave · 12/07/2023 09:38

I really hope this is a troll.

Kimchikitchen · 12/07/2023 09:38

OP

your cat caught fleas from someone or something in YOUR house.

So shaving your cat not going to do a damn thing 😂
