He shaved the cat!

So I have a gorgeous little Tortie cat who, bless her, somehow caught fleas. So I headed out to get some 'spot on' treatment and some flea shampoo so I could give her a wash and some fog sprays for the house so that my partner felt less stressed because he hates bugs. Anyway, when I came home there was cat fur everywhere. He's given her a full skin head cut. Now I understand and she looks cute bless her. To be fair the fleas have gone, she's an indoor cat so I'll keep her warm till it grows back but ever since I've noticed I feel like I have hay fever. Super itchy throat, eyes, ears, skin! Please tell me this is just crazy timing and it's not me somehow suddenly being allergic to my cat?

@Kimchikitchen @SoSadForCav because it's wilful animal cruelty. That is literally what RSPCA is for prevention of cruelty to animals.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2023 10:45

People shave long haired cats as they get matted, so I'm not against that in principle, but leaving hair everywhere means the fleas are everywhere!
He would have waited, and I also disagree with 'only a vet can get rid of fleas'. I have two cats Teo digs and a couple times we've had fleas (but we check them regularly so get on top of it straight away) and have successfully rid of them with home treatment.

He’s an idiot. Shaving the cat will not have solved your flea problem.

It’s also likely to be why you are now having an allergic reaction to your cat. It’s cat dander and skin oils that trigger allergic reactions in most people, not their fur/hair.

The fleas will just live in your soft furnishings and then jump onto your cat and you to bite and then jump back off again.

Exactly. He's a prize idiot, hasn't solved the flea problem, and has made a lot of fur and dander airborne so that it's much more likely to sensitise someone by inhalation.

If you don't yeet idiot partner into the sun, don't ever let him give your cat any form of "treatment" again.

"Doesn't like bugs" 🙄 If you have a pet, fleas (and worse) are a fact of life and you get on and get them treated by the vet. For the animal's welfare, not because some bellend is squeamish.

burntshortbread · 12/07/2023 10:51

Well I hope he is covered in bites and scratches.

Totally unlikely this happened.

Why? Is animal abuse really so unfathomable to you?

I don’t agree with what he did. Added to which, it was a fruitless endeavour

but in now world would the RSPCA regard this as cruelty. Unwise? Yes. Not recommended? Absolutely! animal cruelty to necessitate their involvement? No

Salome61 · 12/07/2023 11:08

How ignorant and cruel. I would not want to be with a man that thinks this is acceptable behaviour towards an animal, I definitely would not be able to trust him with children.

You need to take your cat to the vet and get veterinary strength products which work effectively.

Of course it's cruel. The poor cat would have been terrified. It's fur is it's protection. This man should at least be fined as a deterrent to never do it again.

There is no need to shave long haired cats. I have a long haired cat and brush him every day. Very occasionally he gets a little Matt under his armpits but I snip it carefully out with round ended cat scissors whilst DH holds him.

My long haired cat needed shaving for matts after a period of illness where she wasn’t brushed. They shaved off the matts only, not everything. Like when they go in for an operation and have a little shaved patch, it was like that in various spots.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/07/2023 11:54

If my DP did this I'd LTB but I'd also fucking castrate him first.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/07/2023 11:58

If this did happen, I hope the cat scratched and bit your OH.

Don't be so ridiculous!

Where did I support any form of animal abuse in my response.

The post comes across as a tall tale to generate responses on MN. The practicalities of shaving a cat (unless it was drugged) doesn't fit with the story.

Horrox · 12/07/2023 12:41

Professionally speaking, this is abuse of the cat. Not only that, abuse of animals is a known precursor for all forms of abuse of children and vulnerable adults. The two forms of abuse often co-exist. The first two men who immediately spring to mind for having done something similar to a cat became high risk individuals.

Yes, the RSPCA would be interested if this was reported to them by a concerned vet or member of the public. At the very least, advice would be given that this is neither an acceptable way to treat a cat nor the way to deal with fleas. There would be concern about how the cat is otherwise looked after and about any other pets in the home.

I would want to know the bigger picture in this household, including whether there are children.

idliketogetdownnow · 12/07/2023 14:27

What the fuck have I just read. He is a selfish idiot. Your cat must be extremely stressed and unhappy right now. That is animal cruelty.

TRexTara · 12/07/2023 14:39

This is cruel. It's not funny at all. The OP seems more bothered about her allergies than how distressing it must be for the poor cat. I doubt she will be back. Some people should not have pets.

Sakura7 · 12/07/2023 14:43

That is an act of cruelty, the poor cat.

You and your idiotic partner shouldn't be allowed keep pets.

StevieNicksfan · 12/07/2023 14:52

Please check your cat thoroughly for cuts. Their skin splits so easily. This was an act of animal cruelty and is not funny. I hope this is a made up story.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 12/07/2023 15:12

Nothing else to add I think everyone has said all that needs to be said. I just can't believe someone can behave like that 🥺.

huwhuwbarnymcgrew · 12/07/2023 15:27

Your cat will still have fleas. Your partner is an idiot. I would have gone stir crazy.
