My cat is at the vet's - I'm really concerned that they are going to have to put her to sleep.

I came home from work and found her in real distress and unable to get off the floor.

Doing x-rays and blood tests on her while I wait at home.
Have to phone them in a minute.

Awww bless her. How old is she?

Sparkler1 · 01/03/2007 17:28

Not sure exactly as we got her from RSPCA. Must be around 13/14.

Oh sparkler How horrible. Hope everything is ok.

charliecat · 01/03/2007 17:30

Hope shes ok.

northerner · 01/03/2007 17:31

Oh no That is a good age for a cat Sparkler, but that doesn't make you feel any better I know.

I adore my cat.

Keep us posted.

Just phoned vets. She has had x-ray and blood test done. Blood test has shown potassium level is lower than normal. Whatever that is supposed to mean.
The receptionist is going to get vet to phone me after surgery.
Was reminded on phone that vet had told me there was a poor prognosis.
Have to wait.
Cat is sedated at the moment so is calmer than before. She has a drip and they said that she is miaowing occasionally (sounds like her she is a real miaower at the best of times)

I can't believe how I found her earlier. So distressed. She even messed herself on the floor. The house stinks.

Aw, poor little thing, my cat has a miaow like an air raid siren, people always stare when we go to the vets

Chin up chicken.

BuffysMum · 01/03/2007 17:36

Hugs, had to have my cat put down in October miss him so much, so sad for you.

geekgrrl · 01/03/2007 17:36

poor you sparkler and poor cat. hope it's not as bad as you fear.

Whoooosh · 01/03/2007 17:37

Oh Sparkler-really feel fo ryou and hope the vet has some good news for you later.

Sparkler1 · 01/03/2007 17:41

Vet has just phoned me.
Her x-rays seem fine just show that she is an older cat. Bloods show really low potassium level but there isn't really a specific reason why that can happen apparently. They are giving her fluids with potassium through a drip. They say she is more comfortable now. Still unable to move back legs. Going to see how she goes overnight. If her back limbs are cold and the front ones start to go the same then they will know there are circulatory problems.
I asked vet to be honest with me. She said that it's worth trying everything now but if nothing different in morning she wouldn't want to prolong things.

Oh Sparkler, I am sorry. Fingers crossed for better news tomorrow.

Sparkler1 · 01/03/2007 18:27

Just sitting twiddling my thumbs now. I told the vet to phone any time in the night if there are any changes so I won't be able to sleep properly.
I could really do with a large glass of something right now, can't really in case I get a call and have to go out.

What vets do you go to? or what area? hope you dont mind me asking. I work in a vets so curious
Hope she is ok x

Kittypickle · 01/03/2007 18:37

I do feel for you, sadly we were in a similar situation with our 17 year old cat pretty much exactly a year ago. The waiting is horrible. Is DH around later ? It sounds as if it's a mini egg night really in the circumstances.

Kittypickle · 01/03/2007 18:41

One of my cats has sort of left home Sparkler, I had two calls from people the week before last that started "about your cat!".

He is currently shacked up down the road with an elderly pair of Jehovah Witnesses. I went round to see them the other Friday, then on Monday for the first time in ages someone from the local JW Hall turned up, I don't think it's coincidence ! He is very pampered there and gets fed on roast chicken so I don't think he is in a hurry to come home.

We are hoping our other cat is up the duff, she was in heat the other week and sat touting for business under the carport for hours. Not sure she had any takers though, real lack of cats round here.

It's going to be a long night. Keep waiting for the phone to ring.

Is there anything you can stick on the tv to distract yourself ? I know it's easier said than done though.

KTeePee · 01/03/2007 21:03

Fingers crossed for you Sparkler. My cat died last night (hit by a car) and I am really sad we did not get to say "goodbye" to her (but hopefully she died instantly so was not in any pain). Would hate to have had to make decisions about possible treatments if she had "just" been injured....

Sparkler1 · 01/03/2007 21:05

KTeePee - sorry to hear your sad news. I just keep thinking about tomorow morning and whether or not I will have to go down and say goodbye. It's going to break my heart.

I keep getting flash backs of earlier. She was so distressed - I keep thinking how I should have handled things better. DD1 and DD2 saw her as well and they were very upset. I was trying to comfort cat, trying to get dds into another room so they didn't see the state of her, trying to phone vets, trying to phone friend to come and get dds so I could get to vets on my own all at the same time. It was horrible.

Think I should try and get some sleep. I'm feeling really down in the dumps with worrying. Tiredness doesn't help. I need to be strong for tomorrow.
