My cat is at the vet's - I'm really concerned that they are going to have to put her to sleep.

I came home from work and found her in real distress and unable to get off the floor.

Doing x-rays and blood tests on her while I wait at home.
Have to phone them in a minute.

well sparkler1 any news yet? fingers crossed for you it's good? x

dionnelorraine · 02/03/2007 08:51

morning, let us know how she is xx

Sparkler1 · 02/03/2007 11:21

She's been put to sleep this morning.
Vet phoned me about 8am to say that she had been settled over night but the pain killers were wearing off and her back legs had gone rigid again. She'd been crying too. Vet said it wasn't fair to continue.
DH and I went down about 10am to be with her when they gave her the medication. They put it straight into the tube that she had for her drop so she didn't feel anything.

awww Sparkler ...you did the right thing x

dejags · 02/03/2007 11:24

Poor you Sparkler.

It is so sad to lose a loved pet. Take a little consolation in the knowledge that you were with her and that she was suffering.

Sparkler1 · 02/03/2007 11:24

We fussed her loads when we got there. She was laying on a blanket with a blanket on top of her. She was desperately trying to get up but her back legs wouldn't let her. I was stroking her and rubbing her under her chin and she was purring like mad.

dejags · 02/03/2007 11:25

I meant to say that you eased her suffering which was absolutely the right thing to do.

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2007 11:29

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor little cat. You're never quite prepared for how hearbreaking it is for a much loved family pet to die. I bet you gave her a lovely life with you.

cinnamontam · 02/03/2007 11:30

Sparkler - so sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to my beloved cat 4 weeks ago. I'd had her since she was 6 weeks old through uni, boyfriends, getting married and moving all over Australia. She was the most loved and wanted - just like yours. Nice you were there for her. Thinking of you this weekend and the rest of the family.

Debbsyandson · 02/03/2007 11:32

so sorry sparkler but you did the right thing, and i bet she had a lovely life with you.

Novacane · 02/03/2007 11:34

Oh sparkler, you've set me off again.
My Dad had to put my childhood cat to sleep on Monday too, (see the thread 'it was only a bloody cat')

Its heartbreaking, I only stopped crying yesterday!

Its so hard loosing part of the family.

Be kind to yourself today xxxx

fryalot · 02/03/2007 11:43

Sparkler - my cat went through a similar thing last summer. The vet told me that she did not need to be put to sleep and she would be fine if they amputated one of her back legs. I agreed to this, then watched her suffer for three weeks. I had decided to take her back to the vets and ask them to put her to sleep when she went missing. Six weeks later, I found out that she'd crawled underneath next door's garden shed and died there.

I am crying as I type this, even though it was almost a year ago. She was a much loved part of our family and I feel desperately guilty that in her last weeks, I failed her.

You DID do the right thing. I only wish that I had stood up to the vet and told them that that was what I wanted.

xx

Sparkler1 · 02/03/2007 11:46

I didn't mention that the vet said she died from multiple blood clots.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts. So sorry to hear some of your have been through so much with your own pets.
Two people have told me today that one of the best things to do would be to get another cat really soon. Not sure I'm ready to do that yet.

dionnelorraine · 02/03/2007 11:49

leave it for a few days. see how you all feel then. there is no rush hun x

LRWGHidesInAHole · 02/03/2007 11:51

Sparkler - I'm so sorry to hear about your poor little pussy cat. Love and hugs to you all. xxx

fryalot · 02/03/2007 11:51

I wouldn't. Even though it's "just a cat" you need time to mourn her. Give it a bit of time, and as the previous posts say, see how you feel.

fruittea · 02/03/2007 11:51

We, too, had a similar experience 2 years ago. We decided to wait before we got a new cat, but a year ago we got 2 little boys from the RSPCA. We weren't ready before that. Having said that, we have 2 sets of friends who went straight out within days and got new pets. So there's no right or wrong - do what you are more comfortable with. FWIW, getting a new one straight away won't take away what you felt for the first - you can still love and miss her whilst welcoming a new one into your family.

Take care.

RosaLuxembourg · 02/03/2007 11:53

So sorry Sparkler. My cat is 18 and quite frail but when the inevitable happens I hope I deal with it as bravely as you have.

noddyholder · 02/03/2007 11:53

So sorry people sometimes don't realise how important pets are to some people. You did the right thing Look after yourself xx

Sparkler1 · 02/03/2007 15:56

I'm feeling really numb now.
I've had some lovely friends round for lunch today and it's been good to have some company. I probably would have just slumped on the sofa and sobbed otherwise.
I've just had to explain to dd1 and dd2 about what has happened. DD1 cried lots and DD2 went very quiet (they are 7 and 5). They've just had something to eat and are sat watching tv - carry on with life as normal!

Sparkler, our cat was put to sleep following a stroke at xmas, we all cried and felt dreadful so lots of sympathy to you.

We looked into getting a rescue cat, had a home check and the lady asked if we would prepared to take three kittens which had been dumped the charity were uable to rehome as a job lot. We took them and love them. They in no way replace our lovely Carrie but we found our house just didn't feel right without a cat

Do what suits you best, lots of hugs.

nicm · 02/03/2007 16:20

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
