as im thinking of getting one as atm got no pets and my 2 g. pigs died not long ago. (my DD is 15 mths old and she had met my friends cat who she was very gentle with it)

ive got a big house with a yard in the back and i can see everyone back yard thru my back bedrrom window, and ive noticed there are at least 3 cats lived around here

(im a dog lover but it wouldnt be fair having a dog with no garden!)

toxoplasmosis in cat poo - will need to be careful of small children around it either in litter trays or garden etc.

misdee · 12/01/2006 16:30

they pee and poop in corners.

they scratch.

they leave fur everywhere.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/01/2006 16:31

fleas?

Vet bills?

You value your furniture?

Cat food smells AWFUL?

I have two cats btw

iota · 12/01/2006 16:31

don't ask me - -we got 2 x kittens when ds1 was 6 mths old

northerner · 12/01/2006 16:31

Kittens are gorgouse, but:

Poo/wee everywhere
Will shred furniture/curtains with claws
Cat hairs on cloths
Will have to make arrangements for cat care when out for day/holiday etc
Vet bills

I am a cat lover, just thinking of the negs cause that's what you asked for!

bundle · 12/01/2006 16:32

how often do you go away? who would feed it? can you afford insurance? vet bills can be v steep. can you afford to get it speyed - essential imo to avoid spiralling cat numbers and stinky toms. can you afford crunchy bags of cat food? the tinned stuff stinks, don't even go there. one cat may be lonely on its own and you may be tempted to get two (like me) which cost even more.

do you need more?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/01/2006 16:32

tom cats spray - even if they have been "done".

Female cats attract spraying tom cats - even if they have been "done".

They bring in dead animals.

They bring in live animals that they intended to kill.

expatinscotland · 12/01/2006 16:32

B/c cats are so much better! Their personalities are developed and you'll know alreayd if they're good w/kids or not.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/01/2006 16:33

Dirty paw prints EVERYWHERE when it has been raining.

Cat hair - they moult at least twice a year.

golds · 12/01/2006 16:34

well my 2 always do their 'business' in the same place (that I know of), they have never clawed my furniture, the haven't had fleas, they are so cute and lovable- so no sorry can't think of any negatives.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/01/2006 16:34

Well ive given at least 8 reasons.

That far outweighs the "they are cute and fluffy" argument

DissLocated · 12/01/2006 16:35

Because our two cats have peed on the carpet by the door causing a stink which will not go away, new carpet on the horizon. They have also pooed on our newly turfed lawn and scratched up the soil (despite us providing an outside litter tray) meaning I can't let dd out to play meaning we wasted the small fortune we paid to get the garden landscaped.

Fingers itching to call the local local cats home

iota · 12/01/2006 16:35

au contraire VVV

the cute and fluffy argument outweighs all and any disadavantages

daisy1999 · 12/01/2006 16:36

go on get one, they're cute, cuddly and they're always there for you!

helsi · 12/01/2006 16:37

toxoplasmois is enough IMO - especially when v. young. Ok when they are abit older (children I mean)

chicagomum · 12/01/2006 16:37

I love my cats, however, they moult constantly leave foot prints all over the floor (usually just after I've washed them) and have destroyed the carpet on the stairs (there are thread bare areas). Actually the last point was good as I've wanted to get a new carpet (but now will be getting it not fotr us, but so we can sell the house).

biglips · 12/01/2006 16:42

can they damaged leather suite? which what i have got

OP posts:
carlk · 12/01/2006 16:55

our made a right mess of our suit by scratching the seat of one of the chairs whilst using it as a scratching post [cat pie emoticon]

However they are great fun and kids love them -sometimes too much- DD smush kitty with love aawwwww.

carlk · 12/01/2006 16:55

suite not suit

sweetkitty · 12/01/2006 17:18

I'm a cat lover too but here's my reasons not to get one, mine are indoor so no fleas/worms/dead animals at the door etc

  • one of them poos and wees outside the litter tray not nice
  • when they go in the house it stinks
  • they use the edge of the bed as a scratching post (despite having several) lovely Egyptian cotton sheets are ruined.
  • they fight in the middle of the night and wake me up
  • vets bills, ours had bladders stones cost £1400 to put right
  • cat hair everywhere need to hoover daily
  • wouldn't even consider a leather sofa
  • one leaked anal gland fluid over my bed today

if that doesn't put you off then go for it!!!!

biglips · 12/01/2006 19:03

im nearly going off on it

OP posts:
bundle · 12/01/2006 19:04

cat sick squidges through your toes if you have to go into the kitchen in the dark and have no shoes on

biglips · 12/01/2006 20:54

yuck!!

OP posts:
biglips · 12/01/2006 21:36

anymore things to put me off

OP posts:
morningpaper · 12/01/2006 21:38

They are really NOISY at night when they are kittens, worse than a newborn if you ask me.

Footprints all over everything.

Bringing live birds into the house.

Having to kill maimed animals.

Causing relatives to have athsma attacks.

etc
etc
