as im thinking of getting one as atm got no pets and my 2 g. pigs died not long ago. (my DD is 15 mths old and she had met my friends cat who she was very gentle with it)

ive got a big house with a yard in the back and i can see everyone back yard thru my back bedrrom window, and ive noticed there are at least 3 cats lived around here

(im a dog lover but it wouldnt be fair having a dog with no garden!)

allyco · 13/01/2006 12:26

aah biglips I posted on the very same theme a few weeks ago and decided on the strength of the replies NOT to go for it.

DD has now decided she wants a horse instead. Sheesh.

Blu · 13/01/2006 12:38

LOL at horse instead!

sweetkitty · 13/01/2006 12:41

Mine woke me up about 5 times last night with their fighting and sneaking into the room (can't close the door they scratch up the carpet) then DP fed them this morning and they eat so quickly one was sick, yes I came down with DD and am due any day and stood in the sick

I posted a why I shouldn't get a dog thread. Didn't listen to the warnings and got one anyway. Now am living to regret!

Actually not regretting very much and can't help you with the putting you off cats either. Our cat has never peed or pooed in the house except when accidentally locked in and she carefully did it in the bath so can't fault her there. Cats wormed and flead regularly do not have fleas or carry toxoplasmosis so this should not be a issue with well cared for cats.

I did have a dead frog deposited on my jeans hanging over my chair one night (presume by cat not by dh!) that fell onto my bare feet when I put them on. Yuck.

get a pair, they are fun. And cats help you stay down to earth with their consistantly low opinion of you, no chance of you getting an overinflated ego, keep you nice and humble.

BROWNY · 13/01/2006 19:16

You'll get no help from me!!. I've had cats all my life and love em to bits, very easy to care for... no walkies at ungodly times of the day! Kittens are very easy to house-train using a litter tray for a little while, then when they know what to do, place the tray outside your back door, then eventually remove that - they'll soon find somewhere to 'go' and don't worry, they never 'go' in their own backyard!! My brother's got two, brother and sister and it's funny to watch them play and fight with each other - GO FOR IT, you'll never have to waste meat scraps ever again1!!

biglips · 13/01/2006 21:16

the only main worry ive got is my leather suite which is expensive and i would dreaded if the cat(s) clawed it!!

Biglips, well you know we've got a leather suite and our cat has never scratched it, even when she was a kitten!! My brother covered his brand new leather sofa with a throw when his kittens were really small, but now that they are a bit bigger, they can easily jump up - they only scratch if they think that they're going to fall off!! Or, if you didn't want them to go near your sofa, you could just squirt a little water at them, they'll soon get the idea!!

TeddyRobinson · 14/01/2006 13:32

Please tell me what the point is of having one!

BROWNY · 14/01/2006 13:39

TR - have you ever had a cat as a pet and had a bad experience of them, or just never had one?

I've grown up with having cats as pets all my life. The children love our female cat and she loves them too - when they were babies and cried, or even now sometimes, she runs to them (wherever she may be in the housse) to comfort them - as soon as she rubs herself against the children, they stop crying and are happy to see her - it's really lovely to see.

Cats are really easy to look after, not like dogs!! There is no 'walkies' first thing in the morning or last thing of a night (when it can be freezing cold), they don't have that 'doggy' smell that can linger in your house and they are cheaper to feed! They are always pleased to see you and cuddle up with you too on the sofa - in a nutshell, the perfect pet!!

TeddyRobinson · 14/01/2006 13:50

Hmmm. Don't see the point in pets generally. Nope, never had pets at home although my grandparents did.

I've got 3 kids to look after, don't need any more responsibilities!

iota · 14/01/2006 13:50

I love my cat - he is a companion and an entertainer and has a fabulous 'in your face' personality:

he's very affectionate and loves to sit on my lap and be rubbed. He likes to sleep on the bed when we're in it (some people would think that a disadvantage)

he is brilliant with children and loves to come for a walk to the playground with us - and when he's there he struts around and climbs on the equipment regardless of how many kids are there

I love to see him 'on watch' in the window when I come home - -and am always amused when he comes in in the night and walks over dh in bed, as if he wasn't there, on his way to look out of our bedroom window

I love to see him race up trees (even though he is a big fat b@gger)

he is very talkative and you can have conversations with him (usu about where's my tuna? i don't want that Iams, feed me something else, where have you been? my bowl is empty)

If I sound barmy to you I guess you wouldn't like a cat for a pet

nooka · 14/01/2006 18:01

Lol iota, actually cats are very good for your mental health. Apparently it's the stroking that does it.

poppiesinaline · 14/01/2006 18:32

Biglips - I am a cat lover but do agree with all the negs but awwwwww they are so cute and loveable and they are good for your health (stress levels etc). This is turning into a 'why you should get a kitten' thread isn't it!

biglips · 14/01/2006 22:48

it would be a whole different experience for me as ive been brought up on dogs and i would have a dog anyday BUT we dont have a garden so therefore it would be cruel!

OP posts:
biglips · 14/01/2006 22:49

ive just gotta think about it abit more as i cant really just jump into it without being realistic! (And to tell DP too)

OP posts:
biglips · 15/01/2006 10:53

what would happen to the other cats who lives around here.. will they be shitting our garden more?

(im getting rid of garden this year as the other cats is shitting it all the time!! so ive decided to flag it... im the only one with the garden around here as we've all gor back yards)
