A curious American needs to know...

I assume you mean why is Scotland getting such a high response.

It’s because the Scottish Government have just voted in the Gender Reassignment Reform Bill. This makes self ID much easier in Scotland only. Consequently more Scottish people are aware of the need to clarify sex means biological sex.

Do not think it is unnecessary because of what the Government response so far says on the petition page -

Legal experts have explained how, when it comes to litigation, a GRC trumps biological sex; and complications relating to the interaction between the Equality Act and the Gender Recognition Act mean organisations are often too concerned to allow single sex provision in practice.

No one dares provide sex (biologically) based spaces because the Gender Recognition Act was poorly written as law and seems to actually
change someone’s sex in such a way that it can trump sex as mentioned in the Equality Act which is what allows discrimination on the basis of sex for certain sex based spaces, associations and provisions.

Ignore the Government response so far which says the Equality Act allows sex based spaces. In practice the Equality Act does not without being open to legal challenge.

Look at the petition map, on the site, and see how Scotland is red to register the most signatures. It is because absolutely anyone who wants a Gender Recognition Certificate in Scotland would be allowed to have one if their recent reforms aren’t blocked. The people of Scotland realise the Equality Act needs updating by specifying sex is biological in the Equality Act so it can’t be trumped by ‘legal’ GRC sex.

The rest of us need to wake up, because if Labour get in, we too will have Gender Recognition Reform, and GRCs available on demand to anyone who wants one (without the few present checks and balances we have at present).
