Why?

I used to work Boxing Day. I would have hated to not be able too. We got paid time and a half; I got company; it got me away from abuse.

It'd damage retail; too. They make a lot from Boxing Day sales. The economy is fragile enough at the moment, without destabilising it.

Why would you want to ban shops opening?

And staff get paid double. Why take that away from them?

I think shops over a certain size should have to close Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the people who work there are entitled to a break too. There's online shopping now for those who simply can't go 48 hours without buying something.

Retail would make the same money the next day instead. Loads of retail staff only get single pay and they have no choice about working. The sales used to be the January sales and retail survived. I understand people in essential services like nurses have to work but shopping for half price tat from next is not essential and waiting a couple of extra days to do it won't kill anyone.

Shops didn't used to open, it's a holiday and peeps won't die because they can't go shopping.

I think it would be a good idea. I was talking to the people who worked at Next last year. They had to come in at 4am on Boxing day to get ready for the sale. No option-all staff in, and it wasn't double pay. Surely everyone can wait one more day for the sales to happen? People aren't going to say "hey, well I would have sale shopped, but seeing as it's one day later I'm going to keep my money."
Most people not in retail seem to get at least one more day between Boxing day and New Year and the retail people are too busy working to shop anyway, so I doubt it would effect profits.

I don't shop on boxing day...When I was little sales were called new year sales and started new year...Shops have put them back and back in competition with each other.

I don't shop simply as I see no need and deprives families of family time..My sister has no family but never comes to us Christmas because she works Christmas eve , boxing day and doesn't drive.

No such thing as double pay on boxing day for most retail staff these days. That ended a long time ago I think along with a Sunday rate of pay. That's classed as a normal working day now. Attitude now is that you work in retail expect to work boxing day. I think people would shop Xmas day if the sales started then and the shops opened.

Staff don't get paid double. Employers wriggled out of that a long time ago.

A friend of mine is expecting not to see her daughter for Christmas as she has a shop job in her university city. She's been asked told to work Boxing Day and can't get a train back on Christmas Day in time to be there. So, my friend's DD may well have to spend Christmas Day alone so that she can work Boxing Day and not risk losing her job which she depends on for paying her fees and rent.

My friend can't drive her back as they will be having elderly relatives to stay. They are planning to spend a lot of Christmas Day skyping Sad

No extra pay here for Boxing day either - or any other Bank Holiday. Phone lines at a largish charity.

If we are rostered on we have to work it for our usual flat rate.

Boxing Day sales have been going on as long as I can remember, and I'm nearly 50. Why on earth would you want to change things, DH loves working BD, he gets double pay.

Double pay/Sunday pay - depends when you signed your contract, I guess. DH gets it, I know newer employees don't.
