Nobody has to shop on Boxing Day so if you don't want to, just don't.

Lots of people work over Christmas, should all these people get to have the time off too?

If nobody actually went to the shops on Boxing Day then they wouldn't open.

mrsblackcat · 10/10/2016 21:35

I am in favour of this.

Andrewofgg · 10/10/2016 21:40

You want to give bricks-and-mortar shops another kicking in their competition with online, or are you proposing to make the online sellers shut their servers down?

Come off it.

Andrewofgg · 10/10/2016 21:45

And so many other services operate which are not life and death: the entire hospitality business - of which retail is now really a part - is an obvious example. Nobody would die if the restaurants and pubs and theatres were closed. Or if broadcasting was reduced to one radio channel of recorded material and news summaries. Or if there were no public transport for a second day. The list is endless. What makes retail special?

Evening folks, we're going to move this over to Petitions.

No, but a heck of a lot of retail staff are made to work when they don't want to (which also impacts on families - not able to go away, loads of parents have to get up to get their teenagers to work for 5am, as no public transport, etc.)

I work in retail, no double time for us. Limited options for booking any time off over Christmas, management try to prioritise those whose families live far away as transport limitations make it harder for them to get together.

As long as those without families are not expected to be first in line for the tough shifts, that's fine, but that is how it sometimes works out and it won't do.

There are pockets of Britain where life just goes on over Christmas. There are places in Birmingham and probably;y other cities where the shops are open at Christmas and closed for religious events at other times of the year.

I would sign a petition guaranteeing all workers 2 days off a year for religious or cultural events. Some schools allow this for pupils, I know one family who used it so their daughter could make her first communion in Poland where her grand parents could attend.

These two days could be taken from the holiday entitlement we all have but would be given some protection, almost like a bank holiday.

I don't get all the 'it's Christmas' stuff. OK so I don't do it but friends and relatives celebrate, my nieces and nephews have worked Christmas day in hotels or other service industries from being old enough - possibly because their parents work in the NHS and the police so their parents have often worked Xmas day.

The petition talks about when shops closed for a week, well we used to have half day closing in many towns, do we want to bring that back too?

Yes, I'd bring back half day on Wednesday too.
All small independant shops close in our town Wed afternoon. People use the indoor or outdoor markets instead.

I think it's wrong that some people in retail get no say in whether they work Boxing Day or not, and this is wrong.
People are busy being too busy, Grin this might slow them down a bit and be better for family life, even if it is just a day.
When I was growing up parents wouldn't think of shopping on Boxing Day, it was family time and no shops were open anyway.
If you'd forgotten something, you asked a neighbour if they could help.

Andrewofgg · 12/10/2016 11:59

gillybeanz In the days of early closing on Wednesday the markets had to close too. But all right, let's go back to those days, after all, women with families don't have jobs and can go to the shops every day, can't they?

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 03/11/2016 21:33

I think it's a great idea
