I think shops over a certain size should have to close Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the people who work there are entitled to a break too.

But people who work in smaller shops don't deserve the break?

TheFairyCaravan · 10/10/2016 20:06

What about everyone else who has to work all over the Christmas period? Boxing Day might be the only day they get to go shopping.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 10/10/2016 20:07

I think it's a good idea.

Tarla · 10/10/2016 20:07

By over a certain size I also mean with a certain number of employees and more than one branch, basically scaled right down so that the only shops allowed to open would be corner shops staffed by the owner and their family.

Zeeandra · 10/10/2016 20:07

I never got paid double. It was also expected that you did 2 out of 3 Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Years Eve. Retail is really shit.

nancy75 · 10/10/2016 20:08

I'm 41 and Boxing Day sales have not been going on forever, I worked In retail for years and the sale always started the day after new year. Shops only started opening on Boxing Day about 12 years ago and even then it was only the main shops in central London open Sunday hours, now you have shops like next opening at 5am

FrogTime · 10/10/2016 20:11

I don't get paid a penny over the normal rate. That's just not how it works anymore.

My shop is shut two days per year, Christmas day and Easter Sunday. It would be lovely to have boxing day off too. Especially as my husband works retail too - we don't ever get 2 days off together.

MrHannahSnell · 10/10/2016 20:14

When I was a kid DF reckoned thst his working on Boxing Day used to pay for Xmas

BackforGood · 10/10/2016 20:18

Excellent idea.
There really isn't a need, and staff that work in retail deserve a break too.

Palomb · 10/10/2016 20:36

Where do I sign? I feel dreadful for the poor buggers who have to be up at 0400 Boxing Day to go and deal with people heading to the NEXT sale or wherever. It is so exploitative! Most people who work retail don't get a choice in working.

No one died from not shopping on Boxing Day.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 10/10/2016 20:38

Why care so much about what other people do?

BackforGood · 10/10/2016 20:39

Hardly anyone gets double pay on bank holidays or boxing days ect. I think they should be closed and hate the culture of rushing to the shops when you could be with friends and family BUT shops take an truck load of cash on boxing day so this simply wont happen unfortunalty

LeopardPrintSocks1 · 10/10/2016 20:41

I do find it odd that huge build up to Christmas starting end of September ffs and then back to work day after Confused

Palomb · 10/10/2016 20:42

Signed 👍🏼

Bedsheets4knickers · 10/10/2016 20:49

Il sign this .. from a former shop worker can I just point out that ok we might get paid double or time and 1/2 more like . It's not a choice if they open Boxing Day you have to make an appearance .. the day after Boxing Day is fine . BUT please after working a horrendous xmas eve for most shop workers at least give them a 2 day xmas break Angry

ThoraGruntwhistle · 10/10/2016 20:57

They should have to pay staff extra for doing it, but I don't agree that all shops should be shut. Plenty of people don't do Christmas so it would just be another day to them, why shouldn't they be able to get their shopping?

WinchesterWoman · 10/10/2016 21:00

It's a great idea

allegretto · 10/10/2016 21:06

I would like all sales to start in the new year- it's just depressing in the UK. You rush to get all your Christmas shopping done on the 24th and on the 26th it's all reduced! Much nicer to have a longer break - in Italy the shops are open (not on 26th though) but the sales don't start until after the Christmas period.

bimbobaggins · 10/10/2016 21:06

I get paid extra for workout Christmas Day and boxing day if it falls on a week day but if they fall on a weekend day it is normal money, even chronic day.

I used to put in to work for boxing day as I'd usual be glad to get out of the house after walking on eggshells with my ex dp all Christmas day

nancy75 · 10/10/2016 21:07

On these threads people always say plenty of people don't do Christmas, I wonder how many that actually is?
Given that Xmas is fairly well publicised and happens the same time every year even the people that don't do Christmas should be able to organise themselves so they can cope if the shops shut for 2 days.

GlitteryFluff · 10/10/2016 21:12

You don't get paid any extra for any holidays where I work. Christmas Eve/Boxing Day/new yeas eve/New Years day/bank holidays/Sunday's are all the same basic rate.
As are lates/evenings/nights.
You don't get a choice if you want to work or not. You're rota'd to either work or not work.
It's shit. Especially when you've been run off your feet all November and December, with no seasonal temps or anything, just expected to do double or triple the workload for the same money in the same hours.
Sad

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 10/10/2016 21:12

I'll gladly sign it. Out of principle I don't set foot in a shop between Christmas and new year.

I've just spent months shopping for gifts and food. No way do I want to go shopping again 24 hours later.

I also feel it's unfair on the staff. It's not an essential service such as nurses and fire fighters.

NerrSnerr · 10/10/2016 21:22

When I was a student I did similar work and there were plenty of people happy to work Boxing Day as we know temporary and/ or part time jobs can be hard to come by at times and we wanted all the extra seasonal work that we could get. As a nurse I find it hard to get excited about this, it's not like the vast majority of people in retail have to work on Christmas Day!

TheNaze73 · 10/10/2016 21:28

I have never understood the need to go shopping on Boxing Day.
