Two spaces after a full stop

Do you do this?

Or do you correct this in other people’s work by deleting all their extra spaces?

OP posts:

I delete all the extra spaces 🤣

Why do people do it? It's so annoying!

JellyBeanSpring25 · Yesterday 10:07

I do the double space. Muscle memory from years of using keyboards. I also think it looks better 🤷‍♀️
Otherwise a pendant in every way 😂

I grew up using a typewriter.

I've only just found out that it's now considered incorrect to use a double space!

RampantIvy · Yesterday 10:11

I don't do this. It isn't a thing.

chergar · Yesterday 10:11

I was taught to use a double space after a full stop in typing class, on a word processor not a typewriter, it is hard to change after all these years.

FiveShelties · Yesterday 10:11

When I learnt to type the double space was compulsory. As you can see, I still do it. 😁

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 10:14

Not any more.
I used to. It's how I was taught and it used to be standard years ago when typing but it's not something that is still done. It only used to be needed because of manual typewriter. Theres no point carrying something on just for the sake of it when the practical reason it needed to be done no longer exists.

Seeline · Yesterday 10:15

Yep - always use a double space. It looks so much better, even when text is fully justified is used. You can still see the difference!

Allthegoodusernamesareused · Yesterday 10:15

I was taught to do it in school, and I still do it now when typing letters or reports etc at work. I'm able to restrain myself on texts and Mumsnet posts, though Grin

NerdyBird · Yesterday 10:18

I used to, it was taught as part of the RSA typewriting course, along with proper touch typing and how to lay out and address letters. I don’t now because for some reason it’s not used anymore.

Holiday24 · Yesterday 10:19

I always do a double space! It was how I was taught at school (using a computer, not a typewriter, but it was still considered correct at that time). I'm 40... not sure when it was phased out!

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · Yesterday 10:20

It’s muscle memory…I was taught to do this back in the early seventies and spent my early career as a Court stenographer using a manual typewriter. All those years of using the ‘double space’ are very hard to undo!

Genuine question though…why is it no longer used?

Belladog1 · Yesterday 10:20

Double spacer here. Like others above, I was taught on a word processor at school that that was how it was done, and it's a hard habit to break. I think it looks nicer as well.

Minesril · Yesterday 10:21

Absolutely hate it. Luckily, ctrl-H is a thing!

Pootles34 · Yesterday 10:21

I always do it - as others, that's how I was taught to type, but also now prefer how it looks. Absolutely nothing to do with being a stubborn old goat 😁

EffortlessDiscussion · Yesterday 10:24

No, I was trained to do it 40 odd years ago but made a point of de-training myself out of it about 10 years ago when I realised it was no longer standard practice (I found that hard). Now I think it looks really outdated and it jars me when other people do it, I do correct them if I'm checking a document.

Westfacing · Yesterday 10:37

I do it automatically without thinking as that's how typing was taught in the early 70s!

I did embrace open punctuation when that came about in the late 70s I think it was, as liked the streamlined look 🙂

Double-space is more likely to create white rivers, which do NOT look good.

Oh, and I learnt to type on a manual typwriter about 40 years ago, but when I started using computers a couple of years later I discovered that it was considered outdated. So that's a LONG time that single-space has been preferred.

InBristol · Yesterday 11:20

I was told I had to do it when submitting my Masters a few years ago. I had to go back through the entire document and add spaces in. It does not feel right!

Chasingsquirrels · Yesterday 11:23

Yes I double space.

Pedant61 · Yesterday 11:24

I don't correct other people, but obviously I always double space. Sentences just look so weird with a single space, and they are more difficult to read.

DiNozzoComingBack · Yesterday 11:24

It is absolutely infuriating. It's old fashioned and linked to the use of typewriters. Newspapers always had the double space because it made it easier to literally cut and paste sentences when they were laying them out.

Lawyers still do it a lot and it drives me mad.

CTRl Find& Replace. Search for ". " and replace with ". "

Then to check you haven't now added a third space in certain spaces, after you've done that, do a search for ". "

SomersetBrie · Yesterday 11:26

I'm a copyeditor, it's the first thing I remove.

The second thing I remove is Random capital letters. Usually the same manuscripts.

Had not realised it came from old typewriter days.

WiseMoose · Yesterday 11:27

I didn't know it was now incorrect.

As many others have said, it's how we were taught.
