Pedants' corner

I've had enough of Iv

I've seen Iv in SO SO many posts recently, and I just can't cope! I've even seen it in posts with otherwise correct spelling and punctuation! I'm a primary school teacher, and I've never ONCE seen a child spell it this way, so why the fuck are adults, who are presumably typing on laptops with spell check or on phones with autocorrect, suddenly doing it?!

I don't have a clue what Iv means?
iv is either a Roman numeral for 4 or an abbreviation for Intravenous.

2mummies1baby · 24/03/2024 18:20

Iv is used instead of I've!

OP posts:
ASighMadeOfStone · 24/03/2024 18:22

Because they're typing quickly and aren't in class where it matters, I expect.
I'm a secondary school teacher and haven't seen it either at school.

BuyingTheHills · 24/03/2024 18:24

You can’t cope? Are you prone to overreaction?

Eminybob · 24/03/2024 18:43

I've never ever seen this OP I don't think it's widespread. Maybe just a typo.

SiobhanSharpe · 24/03/2024 18:47

Nope, nor me.
Instead I was thinking luncheon vouchers? (I'm very old) liverpool victoria (lv) insurance?

MyMotherMyDogAndClowns · 24/03/2024 18:49

It’s all over MN, all the time, and it drives me as mad as it does the OP.

Completely, yes.

I've genuinely seen this in three or four AIBUs recently. And not just once- throughout the entire post.

I don't think it's only in class that it matters!

Completely, yes.

Your time is probably best spent on working out why that is and trying to stop it then. Life is going to be very hard if not.

LittleGreenDragons · 24/03/2024 20:05

My autocorrect takes apostrophes out randomly. Doesn't matter which word, pooof and it's gone when I press post. Same with I changing to i mid sentence. (It literally just decided to join up "i mid" into "I'd" despite the space in between).

Trust me, I hate my autocorrects punctuation just as much as you do (and its random choice of words).

Your time is probably best spent doing anything other than patronising strangers and derailing threads on Mumsnet!

I don't think pp is derailing. Quite the opposite.

I'd agree it's more important to note the mistake, and ask ourselves how the mistake came about.

Looking at the posts which have used "Iv" instead of "I've" this year, it's pretty clear that most are using it as shorthand. Only one or two make further SpaG mistakes which would indicate that their knowledge of English grammar and syntax isn't great.

Why would you need shorthand for a word which is comprised of three letters and an apostrophe?

OP posts:
EmilyPlay · 24/03/2024 20:51

Iv never seen it on MN.

Geebray · 24/03/2024 20:51

Imma remind you that English is plastic.

anythinginapinch · 24/03/2024 20:53

This is Pedants Corner. She's allowed to lose her shit about Iv here and not be judged.

I wouldn't. But I'm a descriptive linguist so, along with others I enjoy analysing mistakes to see how they were made, and why. And indeed, if they were mistakes at all, or just stylistic choices.

As I said above, I did a quick AS, and yes, "Iv" is used a fair bit.
All other things being equal, it looks like the majority of times, it's a choice. I doubt for one second that the posters using it are unaware that "I have" shortens to "I've" and not "Iv".

I acknowledge I am judging others for their grammatical/spelling errors, but surely that's what being a pedant is? And this is Pedants' Corner. If you are offended by this, why are you perusing Pedants' Corner in the first place?

Because I've been on PC since we asked for it as a place to chat about language quirks and snippets.

It has changed sadly (like language does) and become known among some of us old-timers as Point-and-laugh Corner as a lot of the posts now are made just to take the piss out of people whose SpaG might not be perfect.

Which is unpleasant.

@BuyingTheHills meant I should spend my time working out why I'm prone to overreaction, not why people make grammatical errors. (Look at the quote thread.)

Not everyone’s phone has autocorrect or predictive text turned on. I don’t. I also don’t think you should be too bothered by the way people type on the internet. Presumably we’re not sitting an English lang test?
