Pedants' corner

I've had enough of Iv

I've seen Iv in SO SO many posts recently, and I just can't cope! I've even seen it in posts with otherwise correct spelling and punctuation! I'm a primary school teacher, and I've never ONCE seen a child spell it this way, so why the fuck are adults, who are presumably typing on laptops with spell check or on phones with autocorrect, suddenly doing it?!

What's lv?

Because I've been on PC since we asked for it as a place to chat about language quirks and snippets.

It has changed sadly (like language does) and become known among some of us old-timers as Point-and-laugh Corner as a lot of the posts now are made just to take the piss out of people whose SpaG might not be perfect.

Which is unpleasant.

And yet I can't help but notice that you are the only person on this thread who has quoted another poster to correct their punctuation.

What's lv?

A misspelling of I've.

Not everyone’s phone has autocorrect or predictive text turned on. I don’t. I also don’t think you should be too bothered by the way people type on the internet. Presumably we’re not sitting an English lang test?

No, but this is Pedants' Corner, so I would have thought this is very much the place to go if you are bothered by the way people type on the internet!

Haha I thought you had mistyped and had enough of tv! I was going to suggest getting an Amazon stick 🤣

I've never ever seen this OP I don't think it's widespread. Maybe just a typo.

I see it all the time and it drives me crazy, but it's odd that the people who do it still manage to write I'm and not Im.

ASighMadeOfStone · 24/03/2024 18:22

Because they're typing quickly and aren't in class where it matters, I expect.
I'm a secondary school teacher and haven't seen it either at school.

Spelling and punctuation matters outside class too.

It's extremely irritating, OP. I agree. You can dislike anything you wish to. As for the sanctimonious wank about 'Pedants' Corner used to be for us to discuss the delicate nuances of language...', well fuck knows if it was, but we can also have a bloody good moan about infuriating mistakes we detest, but must never mention, in case we insult or offend someone. 🙄🙄🙄

I mean, there's a reason it's called "Pedants' Corner" and not "Linguistics Corner", surely!

OP posts:
Bluevelvetsofa · 26/03/2024 12:03

I’ve seen it quite a lot too and find it equally irritating. I wonder why, if you aren’t confident about spelling, you would turn off the auto correct facility. I’m aware it isn’t infallible, but it must surely alert you to some errors.

Why would you need shorthand for a word which is comprised of three letters and an apostrophe?

And which is itself shorthand for I have? I've been posting about this earlier, as I have seen it used in the same paragraph as I'm on here just now!
