Have never heard think only thing as in wallop

Neome · 07/09/2019 20:38

Wasn't it originally eg " ...he's got another thing coming" but then became "if you think that you've got another think coming"

Sorry if someone already said that, read half the thread Blush

UrsulaPandress · 07/09/2019 20:40

HmmHmmHmm

Frangible · 07/09/2019 21:59

Those of you who say you’ve ‘only ever heard thing’, are either ‘hearing’ ‘thing’ the way that some people ‘hear’ Starship singing ‘We built this city on sausage rolls’, or you’re just listening to other people perpetuating their own mishearing.

DadDadDad · 07/09/2019 22:21

Er, pigs, I said I was agreeing with you - that (I thought) you were implying that proper pedants rightly use evidence so are not guided by prejudice. So I was suggesting that you (as presumably a self-identified pedant) would not use prejudice rather than literary evidence etc.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/09/2019 12:59

I think you're muddling up two phrases Neome. There's "he has/had it coming to him", but I don't thing "he has a thing coming to him" was ever used — it's much less snappy!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/09/2019 13:00

Oh goodness, that should be "...but I don't think...". This thread is infecting me!

aliceneedswine · 08/09/2019 13:34

'Think' predates 'thing' and only came about because of the misapprehension of the 'k' in think as the 'c' in coming. Think makes more sense as you are suggesting that the other person needs to think again because they are wrong in what they are thinking.

pigsDOfly · 08/09/2019 14:56

*@DadDadDad. I understood that.

I was just being pedantic in my reply. Grin

huntinghighandlow · 09/09/2019 23:37

When I was in primary school I always used to write anythink. The teacher used to circle the 'k' in red pen every time Blush
