"Think" doesn't make grammatical sense though. Surely it would be "you've got another thought coming?"

"You've got another thing coming" = you've got something else coming your way.

iklboo · 04/09/2019 20:30

It doesn't have to be grammatical. Thing makes no grammatical sense either.

Aberhonddu · 04/09/2019 20:31

Its definitely think, not thing.
As a pp said if you think you're going out dressed like that you've got another think coming.

SweetNorthernRose · 04/09/2019 20:32

I have never heard anyone in my life say 'think' until I saw it on mumsnet Confused

PuppyMonkey · 04/09/2019 20:35

Yes of course think doesn’t make sense, that’s the whole joke. Oh, you think that do you? Well, you’ve got another “think” coming, young lady. Etc.

What on earth would the THING be that is coming? That is just WRONG.

DramaAlpaca · 04/09/2019 20:40

Of course it's think.

Sometimes I despair, I really do. It's the only one that makes sense. It means you need to have another think because you are wrong.

'Thing' makes no sense at all in the context.

iklboo · 04/09/2019 20:41

I wonder if it's regional / age issue?

Where are you THINGers from & how old?

Where are us THINKers from & how old?

I'm NW England, 50.

DriftingLeaves · 04/09/2019 20:43

Of course it's think. Thing would be daft.

minniemoll · 04/09/2019 20:47

It's definitely think; thing makes no sense at all.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/09/2019 20:53

Article here

Seriously, those who think it's "thing", what does that mean in the context? What is the "thing" that is coming? Confused

EllieMentry · 04/09/2019 20:54

Think. Of course.

RiftGibbon · 04/09/2019 20:55

It's think.

ClaudiaNaughton · 04/09/2019 20:59

Think

DramaAlpaca · 04/09/2019 21:04

iklboo I'm a similar region & age as you, also a THINKer.

missmouse101 · 04/09/2019 21:08

Oh please! Of course it's another thing! How on earth would 'think' make sense in that context? Another thing refers to something else. Good grief.

PuppyMonkey · 04/09/2019 21:11

Another thing refers to something else

Confused

Use it in a proper sentence in that context then, someone, I find it baffling WTF you could mean.

Flamingo84 · 04/09/2019 21:12

Definitely ‘think’. It’s commonly incorrectly changed to thing and has somehow fallen into the mainstream.

Plus if Susie Dent says it, it’s true. You don’t argue with a lexicographer!

DadDadDad · 04/09/2019 21:18

I agree that "think" is the original (and correct) version, but "thing" is pretty common (and I thought it was "thing" until only a few years ago).

Here's an example that amuses me: a journalist wrote two articles on the same day and in one he's used (or been copy-edited to use) "thing" and one it's "think" - he's quoting the same speech in each of them! Grin

lazylinguist · 04/09/2019 21:21

Of course it's not 'thing' Hmm

The whole expression is "If you think that, then you've got another think coming". Thing makes no sense. Just because something is commonly said, that doesn't mean it's correct!

It's a bit like the Americans saying "I could care less", meaning "I couldn't care less". It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever!

campion · 04/09/2019 21:27

Think.
Diction is so sloppy these days you can see how it happens.

I'll forgive Dominic Grieve this time. He's got better things on his mind.

missmouse101 · 04/09/2019 21:28

But another think coming makes no bloody sense at all. Confused

PuppyMonkey · 04/09/2019 21:34

Missmouse, ’think’ has been explained about 50 times so far on this thread.

Still waiting for an example of a sentence showing why ‘thing’ WOULD make sense.Grin

DadDadDad · 04/09/2019 21:35

I don't think you can blame sloppy diction. I'm sure even well enunciated speech flowing quickly could lead to "think coming" being misheard. Anyway, "thing coming" is documented by the OED back to 1919, so it's a century old. Apparently, the earliest documented "think coming" is 18 years AFTER that! Shock
