Dd notified of new Apple tag with her since early hours - advice?

Dd is 22, at uni, lives alone in flat with 24 hour reception (manned 24 hours) we visited her yesterday and went for brunch this morning, this evening she's had a notification that a new AirTag has been with her since 5.01am and shows the walk we took to and from the cafe this morning. She's checked everything and can't find anything, has anyone had this and it's been a mistake or should we be very concerned?

@Febrier - good idea I'll get her to do that tomorrow and perhaps talk to the management team too (I think she's mentioned a forum type thing before) thanks!

Please go to the police

@clpsmum

Please go to the police
There is very little they can do. This is likely an it glitch. It either ear pods or some such deliver that the girl already owns. I really doubt there is anything more sinister.

There is a level of hysteria on this thread which is out of proportion.

QuebecBagnet · 03/04/2022 22:34

Maybe it’s someone in the flat above or below her who happened to walk to the same cafe at the same time as her?

QuebecBagnet · 03/04/2022 22:35

Also has she been out with just her bag from the other night to see if the tracker stays or moves with her? Then repeat with her coat?

But the police will have the means to discover which it is. Perhaps by examining the CCTV anywhere your daughter visited in the eight hours preceding the Alert message. Anyway to find out who it is and take appropriate action.

Is this what you think the police would do?

Well Febrier, the police DO have the means to investigate. Whether or not they do, and if so how, is obviously not up to me. But since the OP's daughter went home, IF this is a sinister occurrence, then the perpetrator now knows where she lives. And IF the device was deposited for sinister reasons ... Well I'm just not sure I'd want to rely on your estimation of events for my daughter's safety.
Meanwhile, all the assurances that it's okay because they've checked and not found the device; well you need to update your info. The perpetrator can turn the thing on and off, so nothing that looks certain IS certain.
I repeat, I don't want to scaremonger, but I do think that a visit to the police would be wise. I shall say no more.

@iknowimcoming

Nothing really to report but Dd has gone to stay at a friends tonight (nothing to do with the AirTag nonsense) and the AirTag is now showing as active (but unable to play the sound) and still in (the location of) her flat so still a mystery atm
Could it be someone else in the block that's being tracked ?
BornBlonde · 03/04/2022 23:01

Hope you get to the bottom of it!

iknowimcoming · 04/04/2022 00:00

Edited post thanks @TokyoTen

She has her AirPods with her so they can be ruled out now sadly.

Whilst I am of course very worried about this, she does live in a large complex of flats with flats below hers and above, so whilst you could certainly figure out she lives in the complex and roughly whereabouts within it, I'm reasonably sure you couldn't pinpoint her exact flat or which floor she's on.

Equally it's pretty hard to get in there, the entry phones have cameras so you can see who you're letting in and there's a 24 hour manned reception desk, although there are times when the staff have to go elsewhere but when that happens you simply can't get in without knowing someone inside.

In short I'm not panicking and neither is Dd atm.

@iknowimcoming Your original post has not been edited.

I've requested for it to be deleted but suspect the mods are in bed!

iknowimcoming · 04/04/2022 00:35

P.S. it doesn't actually give away her floor as such but if you knew the building You could work it out (somewhat paranoid I agree but just in case!)

Well this has been educational!

NumberTheory · 04/04/2022 01:08

OP has your DD considered going to an Apple Store tomorrow with everything she had on while she was out with you and being tracked and request that they find the tag?

Febrier · 04/04/2022 04:35

@yzed Is this what you think the police would do?

shazzer1978 · 04/04/2022 06:23

@iknowimcoming even if your post does get deleted @TokyoTen has actually said which floor your DD is on. Not that I think it really makes any difference in this situation.

firsttimemumhere · 04/04/2022 06:39

Though when my son was 4 months old I had a dummy in my cleavage for about 6 hours before I noticed. So an Airtag I wouldn't even notice if it was in the right place

PriamFarrl · 04/04/2022 07:10

My keys were in the pocket of some trousers in my wardrobe. My phone thought they were in the living room. It’s can’t distinguish between floors.
It could just be the person in the flat upstairs.

iknowimcoming · 04/04/2022 07:54

@shazzer1978 - thanks but Mumsnet hq are all over it - thanks HQ!

Quick update - Dd has been on to Apple support who took it very seriously and were very helpful (although they were initially confused) it was quickly escalated and they have come up with a plan which will show if it's a glitch or not within 24 hours (they do think it is a glitch btw) and if it's not a glitch I will be heading up there pronto with dh's metal detector and on apples advice will then involve the police.

If it tracked going for the walk then if it's not a glitch it will be something she was wearing or carrying (unlikely)- why the drama about a metal detector Confused. Unless those belongings have been left unattended for a period of time for someone to unstitch and restitch lining (unlikely) then it won't be invisible.
Blondeshavemorefun · 04/04/2022 16:14

Entrigued what the plan is

KittensTeaAndCake · 04/04/2022 16:42

It's not a drama about the metal detector, OP is quite rightly doing all she can to protect her DD. It's such a worry when they are so far away at uni.

Fingers crossed it is a glitch OP 🤞

yzed · 04/04/2022 16:57

Thank you for the update iknowimcoming, very much appreciated and I'm glad to know that Apple took it seriously (as is only right). I hope the next 24 hours bring a resolution for you.
