Dd notified of new Apple tag with her since early hours - advice?

Dd is 22, at uni, lives alone in flat with 24 hour reception (manned 24 hours) we visited her yesterday and went for brunch this morning, this evening she's had a notification that a new AirTag has been with her since 5.01am and shows the walk we took to and from the cafe this morning. She's checked everything and can't find anything, has anyone had this and it's been a mistake or should we be very concerned?

Crikey OP what a worry! Hope you get a resolution soon

pastypirate · 04/04/2022 17:41

@iknowimcoming

Quick update - Dd has been on to Apple support who took it very seriously and were very helpful (although they were initially confused) it was quickly escalated and they have come up with a plan which will show if it's a glitch or not within 24 hours (they do think it is a glitch btw) and if it's not a glitch I will be heading up there pronto with dh's metal detector and on apples advice will then involve the police.
That's a good response from Apple

Oh wow!

This is scary, I use AirTags for my keys & AirPods etc. if I leave them in my car and walk into a shop I get a notification to let me know I’ve left them behind. It doesn’t tell me what journey they have been in though, just where they are at the present minute. They are bigger & thicker than I initially thought they would do you could easily pat down a jacket / bag etc and feel them in the lining.

Hope you can an answer soon ❤️

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 04/04/2022 18:00

Hope it’s just a glitch.

inspiration101 · 04/04/2022 18:01

i’ve use these Apple tags on my teenager to keep track of him as he keeps turning off his location on his phone. was very disappointed when he got a notification giving the game away & found the disc in his coat. this is worrying for your daughter some one has planted the apple tracker somewhere in her. Does she carry a bag it’s got to be somewhere very. lose to her .

@KittensTeaAndCake

What did the messages say *@SofieM0*? I wonder if that cat is lost?
I very much doubt the cat is lost. Loads of cats have large home territories. It has probably been given a tag because it's a Six Dinner Sid.
RonSwansonsChair · 04/04/2022 18:15

Best of luck OP and DD, fingers crossed it's a glitch and nothing else. Worrying though!

NeverEndingFireworks · 04/04/2022 18:16

@Zonder

Second time I've heard of these things and only on MN. They sound awful. It would be great if you could have one just for your things but I'm amazed they can be used to track someone and they can't do anything about it.
I love my AirTags. I have them on every set of keys - so often I would put, say the shed key, in a pocket, after getting something out and then not be able to find it. Put the car key down JUST BEFORE GOING OUT and not remembering where it was (eg on top of the washing machine that I decided to empty before leaving!).

I can be taken, step by step, to the right jacket on the back of the door

If I put one on the cat I would only know where she was if she was near to an iPhone owner.

They are also not cheap!

thatsgotit · 04/04/2022 18:17

This so-called innovation is fucking ridiculous. Society does not need this.

Patchbatch · 04/04/2022 18:17

@KittensTeaAndCake

It's not a drama about the metal detector, OP is quite rightly doing all she can to protect her DD. It's such a worry when they are so far away at uni.

Fingers crossed it is a glitch OP 🤞

But it's only going to on a small number of items, if there at all. You can use hands and eyes to see it.
SunshineCake1 · 04/04/2022 18:29

I hope it is a glitch but how scary.

Recently a woman had one dropped in her coat hood by a man with evil intent.

ittakes2 · 04/04/2022 18:31

Is there any chance it’s in your things?

LittleMissMe99 · 04/04/2022 18:33

Gosh, how worrying. I hope she gets to the bottom of it and it turns out to be a glitch

Backtomyoldname · 04/04/2022 18:37

I’d be worried to until I found an innocent and rational explanation.

My daughter was notified that one was near her and was initially a little shocked/concerned.

She was on a school trip, as a teacher. Nothing dark but due to the nature of the school they have to take security of their children more seriously than a run of the mill school.

Not wanting to alarm her children she stood close to the coach door as they filed off whilst watching her phone. Nothing.

So she then went up the bus. She found it in a coat lining. Saw the name. No further worries - a notorious coat looser and likely to wander off. She didn’t tell the lad or parent later.

Hopefully its a glitch.

I'm an android user so the whole thing is very new to me.

Asoul80 · 04/04/2022 18:40

So these tags are for what exactly? If somebody steals your item and they have an iPhone, apple contact them to let them know its tagged?! Also, you're protected from stalkers only if you own an iPhone?

Supermum29 · 04/04/2022 18:48

My neighbours had one for their dog that annoyingly connected to my phone. It may be nothing harmless just that someone close by has got one. I managed to disconnect from my neighbours one quite easily so hopefully nothing sinister

Blueeyedgirl21 · 04/04/2022 18:48

@Asoul80 I use Tiles not air tags but we have one on my purse and DP’s wallet and keys. When you can’t find them you buzz the tile and voila you know where they are. I know people that put them on pets also.

We also have one in MILs phone case as she often loses her mobile and gets in a massive tizz about it. She has her phone on silent at all times. We can then make the phone case buzz and ring when we activate the tile so she can find it.

Supermum29 · 04/04/2022 18:49

*may be something harmless

law050465 · 04/04/2022 18:51

Nice bit of victim blaming there 🙄

They are for finding lost stuff! I have 4, on 4 sets of keys that I routinely misplace. love them. The app takes me right to them and I can get it to beep at me if I need to - like the key lost down the side of the sofa.
OhSoStranger · 04/04/2022 19:03

Christ how scary !!

law050465 · 04/04/2022 19:06

@Gingernaut

It's the size of a coin.

She needs to systematically search every part of her bag and coat and not be so stupid as to leave her bag and coat unattended again.

Nice bit of victim blaming there 🙄 I’m sure that’s appreciated 😡
LizzieSiddal · 04/04/2022 19:20

Thanks for updating OP. Glad you have a plan.

marqueses · 04/04/2022 19:24

What happened when she took things out of the flat and returned them one by one? DId that show up which item was causing the problem?
