Dd notified of new Apple tag with her since early hours - advice?

Dd is 22, at uni, lives alone in flat with 24 hour reception (manned 24 hours) we visited her yesterday and went for brunch this morning, this evening she's had a notification that a new AirTag has been with her since 5.01am and shows the walk we took to and from the cafe this morning. She's checked everything and can't find anything, has anyone had this and it's been a mistake or should we be very concerned?

For those questioning it’s size, this is the one we have on the cat which is about a month old, so the newest type.

I wonder how many notifications mines been sending out. I have one on my keys connected to my iPad, but my phone is a Samsung (I'm one of those gifted people that swaps between Apple and Android 😂😂). My phone and my airtag come out with me, my iPad stays at home. I bet I've been pinging iPhone users all over the place 😁.

Here is mine compared to coins. The white bit is a case. The actual tag is the metal bit.

@KittensTeaAndCake

Someone mentioned a cat had one on their collar. Does this mean it makes noises everytime the cat goes any distance away from the owner's phone - poor cat! No it's really not that good! I'm pretty sure it only beeps when you have lost it and go looking for it. The 'find my' app locates it and when you are within range you can make it beep to find it.

As Nelliephant1 says they're are pretty useless, my one sometimes doesn't even update till the next day even when it's with me!!

And yes they are the size of a 50p but as thick as my little finger.

I'm sure it'll end up being something really simple OP, hope you can get to the bottom of it. I wouldn't rule out the iPods just yet either.

No, it doesn’t beep unless I go through the Find My app and play the sound.

It isn’t Wifi based at all, as @AgentJohnson said it’s Bluetooth. We got on for the cat as he went missing for a long time, however it’s pretty useless at the moment as our house backs onto fields so it can’t be found over there. If it’s in a busy, built up area with lots of iPhones providing the signal then it’s more effective - which is how the person on the other thread was able to locate her car in London.

Fraaahnces · 03/04/2022 12:12

I think you’d notice that if it was stuck to your shoe.

NewYorkCityDreamer · 03/04/2022 12:18

I bet it’s the airpods glitch

Hawkins001 · 03/04/2022 12:47

Could the tag have been tracking the friend ?

Nanny0gg · 03/04/2022 12:59

@RampantIvy

Being an Android household I have never heard of this. This thread has been an eye opener, so I am going to watch the videos and educate myself.
Me too.

And I'll never buy an IPhone. What a hideous invention.

Ok.

caringcarer · 03/04/2022 13:26

My son has one for his cat. Every time there is new technology there are some who will abuse it for sinister means. Get your dd to wear another coat or jacket and leave suspect one in flat and go put again. If no tracking it is somewhere on/in her coat.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 03/04/2022 13:44

Interesting IT glitch by the sounds of it

Acrasia · 03/04/2022 13:56

@Nanny0gg Apple didn’t invent them, they just made their own version of it. Some other trackers on the market don’t alert you to their presence at all.

And other smart phones are better because…?

Do you have an android phone? Do you know google tracking stores way more information than iphone tracking?

I use an android for work. Anyone with access can see my entire journey history, current location, browsing history, photos, everything. It’s not only recorded on your phone, but on your google accounts.

Anyone gets or hacks into your google account and they have access to everything.

I have an iphone for personal use and don’t log in to google.

I'm watching a murder trial in America at the moment and they have used the defendants Snapchat account to track his movements.

Many people don't realise their location can be seen on Snapchat. I think there is a setting to change it to ghost mode so your location is hidden from others.
iknowimcoming · 03/04/2022 20:01

Nothing really to report but Dd has gone to stay at a friends tonight (nothing to do with the AirTag nonsense) and the AirTag is now showing as active (but unable to play the sound) and still in (the location of) her flat so still a mystery atm

Has she got her AirPods with her? If not can she go and get them and see if it moves?

GoldenOmber · 03/04/2022 20:27

Bet you anything it’s AirPods. They can’t play the sound if they’re in their case.

No-one needs more than a string and two cups, right.

yzed · 03/04/2022 20:55

I hate to be the one to say this, but it seems that the advice is that your daughter should go to the police about this, and right away. especially as the "owner" of the thing now has her address.

The options are that it's been the glitch you hoped for, or an accident, or an extremely sinister deliberate act. It may well be that that last is the least likely, and obviously the one no one wants to think about. But the police will have the means to discover which it is. Perhaps by examining the CCTV anywhere your daughter visited in the eight hours preceding the Alert message. Anyway to find out who it is and take appropriate action.

Whether or not you agree with anything I've said (and I've really only been thinking of your daughter's safety) please keep us updated. This is something any of us need to understand more about.

My very best wishes

Is this what you think the police would do?

Is there a block WhatsApp or even old fashioned notice board? Perhaps she could ask if anyone else is getting g a notification (expected or otherwise)? That risks showing her hand of course.
